Assault at least with Canadian laws is written as any behaviour that applys a force to an unconsenting person. http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/c-46/42801.html

Which has been interpreted as uttering threats, or even touching a person in prior cases. So according to that, this could have lead to assault charges. Mind you, it is very minor and is up to the discretion of the judge to follow through, but the police would have every right to lay the charge if it was reported.

If a lawyer wants to get even more vicious, he could also add theft and vandalism to the list of charges.

If society adopts a set of norms, such as public politeness and respect for each other, and the majority of the public enforces it, you eliminate at least half of the need for intrusive government, both legislative and judicial.

You and I both hope for a utopia, but realistically, is it even possible?

If this hell spawn had any wits about her, she could have laid assault charges on you. Which would sort of suck since she deserved it.

That is probably the main reason why I personally don't want to go to theatres now, especially during the opening weeks. I just don't want to have to put myself in a situation where I find myself laying the boots to someone rather than watching the movie all because this person pushed me over the edge.

moral of the story: we need to remember how to do things the low-tech way as well.

Isn't the war against terrorism a live example of this? Fighting the guerilla warfare in an urban environment doesn't really allow the modern military forces to fully utilize their advance technology such as cruise missiles, tanks, artillery and such thereby relegating them to old WWII style house to house urban combat.

"Mushrooming" (otherwise known as expanding) bullets do not "just about guarantee" death. They are more effective, but not tremendously more so. They are banned for wartime use (and have been for quite a long time) by international treaty. I suppose the reason was that they were "more inhumane" or some such drivel...interestingly police use this type of round routinely.

I believe the reason why police still use hollow points is that their agenda when it comes to gun usage is a whole lot different than the soldier's agenda.

I think in the military they shoot to wound, therefore causing the soldier who is shot to require the attention two additional soldiers. Thus, one soldier shot basically means three soldiers out of action.

With the police, the only time they use their weapons is in life or death situations where the choice to fire is based on stopping the perp. The only way to guarantee that the perp stops is to kill. Also, in an urban environment, hollow points are less likely to go through walls and kill innocent bystanders than full metal jacket bullets.

I believe the drop in development seems to be curiously related to the drop in the use of slide-rulers and the subsequent usage of electronic calculators.

  25. Re:It probably does on Violence in Video Games Debate Continues to Rage · · Score: 1

Ideally, you'd pick a reasonably sized sample of individuals who don't currently play GTA, make half of them spend an hour or two a day at it, and take samples (i.e. ask questions and do blood tests) of how many started having more violent thoughts afterwards, or engaged in antisocial behaviour. A study done a few years back indicated that minor social slights raised adrenaline levels for southerners more than new englanders. This was done with Med students, and the ones from the northeast would barely be perturbed by being bumped, while the southern ones would have a more aggressive response. Something like that should be done in this case, so that we have some hard evidence, and a baseline to compare to.

How about we just take a sampling of violent criminals in jail and find out how many of them played video games prior to their crimes?

Then again, people are just generally violent. Ask Hitler what he played? What about people in the middle ages or the wild west? Compared to the days past, I'd say society has evolved to the point where we're less violent than before.
