  1. Pay to save? on Forgent Squeezing Money Out Of JPEG, Other Patents · · Score: 2, Interesting

We're already seeing Pay to play games (MMORPGs) why do I get the feeling some company is going to get sick of patent wars like this and make a new image standard, get everyone onto it then slap on a 1p (2c) charge on each file saved just to screw over people for a few weeks untill the web-standard changes.

  2. Well done Sony.. on Sony To Use PS2 Chip In Flat-Screen TVs · · Score: -1, Redundant

Don't they learn? What edition of PS2 laser are we on now? PS2 lasers die faster then cannon fodder in RTS games.

Most people seem to have exprience with at least slow down from the laser in a PS2 or know a friend who does, so now Sony want to take PS2 technology and move it into a main stream market (sorry but I don't class games as mainstream as fake people from Hollywood).

Maybe I'll learn to repair PS2 technology for when this is released and over charge everyone to become stinking rich.

  3. Anyone remember Army men on Finny The Fish Swims Into Videogaming View · · Score: 2, Insightful

What was it a few days ago "If it doesn't have army men it's original"?

Well this seems original but I don't find the idea very entertaining, if I want to swim around and get food then I'll goto a leisure centre, swim for an hour and grab some lunch.

Anyone remember the "Seaman" game on the Dreamcast? Same thing, different ideas. It'll fail majorly outside of the Asian market, but in that market it'll sell like hot (fish)cakes.

  4. Welcome to life on Why Videogame Reviews End Up Being So Controversial · · Score: 4, Insightful

We live in an era where an opinion is taken as fact by most people (Hello TV). They cannot get that it doesn't matter who is right but that the truth is expressed by someone.

If I go into a shop and ask ten random people something like "Do you like apples?". 5 out of them should in theory say no, 5 should say yes. It won't work like that but it's the basic idea.

Everyone has different tastes (I dont like rap,it out sells everything right now. I can ignore it and shrug), we just have to accept and find a tolerance level for something we dislike.

There will always be "trolls" who just flame for the fun of it, s well as fanboys who would say Myst had the best gameplay ever. This is how life is, as long as no one becomes a zealot then there isn't a problem.

People need to accept that the Earth doesn't revolve around a carbon based life form with the same name as them. If we accept opinions from other people and tolerate things we don't like which they made do then the world runs fine. If we don't... well lets just say lawyers enjoy this sort of world and look where they are now..

Shall we just change the term to "Person who had a brain" instead? I can become a genius and write the next major OS which works well and does everything perfectly for everyone, but my opinion on jellyfish means jack.

  6. Army guys? on Tim Schafer Talks Psychonauts Originality, Dialog, Release · · Score: 4, Interesting

Guess he's not seen the sales figures for original games lately.

Anyone remember Bill Hatcher? Made by Sonic team, pushed eggs around, fight evil crows dressed in a chicken suit... yea thought now..

No one wants to take a risk any more because the industry is no longer about the games. It's about the money, if you get a format (FF, FPS games) you can make endeless sequals and be 99% sure of getting your money and a bit more back.

Just look at this year. Top two most wanted games are, Half-life 2, FFX whatever it is now and Doom 3. All three will sell millions and be called classic even if they suck.

Why risk money when you can have another sure fire "open my legs and ride me till dawn" sequal?

  7. Beep boop beep beep on The Rise And Fall Of Game Audio · · Score: 4, Informative

I think people want more and more "realism" in their games to the point where they look and sound like a movie (maybe even play like one cough).

Today I find music from Sonic 2 and other SNES/Megadrive (Genesis) era games to be much much better then from the 3D era. They now seem too "unclub like" (no other way to put it).

When I listen to music ingame I want it to blend in, to make me tap my foot and to be enjoyable in the background. Todays games tend to make music "just there" or a huge part of the game (Doom 3 comes to mind), but none of it is really enjoyable. Rather then make music to be enjoyed they make it to fit a game and you can't just sit there and enjoy it, rather you must hear it as it was originally ment to be or nothing at all.

Places like http://www.ocremix.org/ do a good job at keeping the old game music alive in a new format and show how much we love the classic songs.

Developers don't understand that we can still remember all the old school music to levels in a game we loved and replayed many times far far better then music we hear for a level in a game we never pick up again.

  10. Hmm on Lara Creator Returns To Tomb Raider Franchise · · Score: 5, Insightful

Big tits, hot pants, huge lips...

Like we haven't seen enough Lara, most Tomb raider games have added little to the series and theres not a whole lot you can do with them.

Lara locks on, you bounce around and shoot with pistols. RSPCA, WWF etc. start to bitch. Wolf diesin hail of bullets, you spend five minutes trying to find that tiny hole or back tracking to get some tiny key you missed.

Find secret ammo, repeat untill new enemies, use better weapons and repeat, repeat, repeat.

In the PSX games Tomb raider made me drool (T rex anyone?) but now... it's just average, the GBA games are making more improvements for the genre on that console then any Tomb raider game after the first has.

Infact I think I've only ever finished was the one featuring various flash back missions. It made it intresting to some extent but it was still the same pattern and no real changes.

Then again Doom 1, 2 and Final doom all kinda fall into the space hole and I'm spending stupid amounts of money on a new PC to play 3 so maybe this one will change it all and do more then pixely tits.

Once you have got 2x2 you start to get 4x4, 6x6, 12x12 and take much bigger leaps at each step untill you're talking 100 tera HDs.

I've played many banned games (Mortal Kombat, GTA etc.) and yet I've never commited a single crime, looking at the sales figures seems the same can be said for most fans. You can pick out just about anything and find a few people involved with a screw lose.

Remember all this crap aimed at movies a while back? Same thing but gamers don't tend to speak up so much and find it harder to get alot of people to go "I played it, didn't do me no harm", where as movies will do this easily.

  22. Bah to idiots on Manhunt Violence Story Sees Updates, Threats · · Score: 5, Insightful

If someone wants to play a game about killing Hell spawn demons (Doom 3 refrence : check), eating babies (Dunno :check) or stabbing old ladies then they should be able to. It's not their fault if some nutter goes off the rails and ends up killing someone.

I'm sick of hearing "GAMES DID IT!" because it's a cheap excuse for a fucked up society. You can't blame the car makers for a drunk driver so lets not blame the Playstation for the fucked up little kid.

Mod me troll if you wish, I don't overly care for karma compared to my opinions on this topic. I think the world is fucked up and blaming my hobby, I can earn Karma back but I can't earn back ignoring my opinions and staying silent in a discussion I feel important.

  25. Okay this is too far.. on Urban Hunt - Another Alternate Reality Game? · · Score: 0, Troll

Recently manhunt got blamed for some psycho killing another kid... why arn't games like this blamed?

Games are games and need to stay where they are, when you start crossing the barrier between Mario jumping on mushrooms and abuse of mentally disturbed people you cross the line.

Things like this get into peoples heads (Urban legends style) and "a friend of a friend" type things. If it's on a console or on the internet we can shrug it off, but when you start throwing in real life stuff the line blurs so much that people who have violent urges may see this as a real event..

This maybe the kinda thing which people could blame for real life murders and looking at Slashdot it's getting more known and mainstream (I love bees for example).
