What, the UN that rapes children?? And you want to put them in charge of the root DNS servers? America needs to get over the KofiAddiction and how. I have never seen an International Peace organization allowed to be so frickin' filthy. I would honestly like to know what would happen if it were made public that our soldiers were raping Iraqi children. Or selling them into sex slavery. Have you been to Darfur or Bosnia and seen the conditions of the UN Refugees??? They can't live up to what their charter says they are supposed to do to facilitate peace.
No offense, but the UN needs to pull their head out of the sand, make a complete reformation and revamp the Security Council before they can have *any* more power in the World, developing or otherwise.
Not true. Mine's color!:) There is also the model 7199T that has a funky 20 key keyboard and uses 'intelligence' to help you out. It's obnoxious. I'll stick to my small qwerty keyboard... I've learned it well enough to do whatever I really need to, mostly. Sometimes it takes a bit more control than I want it to, but I modify the SmartText when that happens.
The thing that I hate is that the browser on it kinda stinks. I mean, it's great for the mobile targeted sites, I can order movie tickets, etc... but I can't do the simplest thing like check my gmail. So I was pondering forwarding my gmail accounts to the t-mobile account that I can set up for my blackberry so I can get them on my blackberry. But then Paris got hacked.:P Hell no, I don't need to be that mobile, thanks.
My husband calls it my looking glass because I am checking it every 20 - 30 minutes. But then, we have a response time to keep to.:P

We in the West need to wake up, start thinking more innovatively, and compete with our best tools: our creativity, education, and tremendous freedom to explore new business opportunities.
While I do agree with you altogether, I have to wonder just how good our education is comparitively. Currently we rank something like 18th in the world in education, with South Korea and Japan taking the first two spots. Now mind you, this does not consider our higher-education system, but our children's education. And *this* is why my children will be home schooled, so that they can compete on the global scale, and not for jobs at McD's.
Jho
Or to attract new listeners. In 98, this was done here in San Diego when one station cut from Dance to Mexican. I think they played Macarena for an entire weekend. And yes, I vomited repeatedly and they didn't STOP!!!!
I can't wait... we are getting on for Development, and they are going to let me work with IBM PS's to install it. I really dig the technology, and I think the Virtual IO system that they have, along with some of the newer stuff, like the Virtual Storage Controller (which is fscking amazing!!!). We'll see how it goes. What *I* don't know yet, is if we are going to go Linux or AIX with that platform. We're just kicking the ideas around the next couple of weeks.:)
Jho
I have been doing a lot of close work with IBM and a couple of other electronics companies in the past few weeks. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Jobs is just being foresightful (imagine how much we could make if we all were?) and anticipating that IBM has been moving out of the direct manufacter business.
There are a couple of key things that have happened that have made this seem impending. The first of course, was the divestiture of the IBM Laptop division to a Lenovo in China. (I'm so glad I have one of the last US made ones). Then, in April, IBM's Q1 numbers missed their target, resulting in a 8% drop in IBM stock. This was due to product delays, drop offs in sales around the world, and rising pension costs. Then at the end of April, Avnet Inc. announced that it was going to buy Memec, LLC, which is the world leader in semiconductor distribution and on-demand design.
The word on the street though, is that the mainframe and midrange areas are not going anywhere, and the AIX world is booming with business, so they are smart to keep their focus on their stable lines.
All of this, plus the interesting fact that IBM is focusing all of its efforts and attention not only on 'short-term' support contracts, but the repeating big customer - Professional Services. This is a cash-cow industry, if done right... We'll see how things progress. It really looks like IBM is starting to try to emerge from the Electronics Industry that brought them into the 21st Century.
Just my $2.00. Hey, it's 2005, inflation, ya know?
Jho
Might need to start with brain scans of mgmt. Brain DUMPS of the core... yummeh.
But seriously. At some point, someone's got to put together a crash IT course or something for new/relatively new managers and directors (especially) in IT. We're a different lot... not bad, but we're not accountants or worse, fry vat engineers. *sigh*
Been a rotten week, can ya tell?:P TGIF.

What the heck would you cool with that anyways? I could see some fairly useful implementations in like custom works and machine building - but I can't think (yet) of anything that would require that much cooling & juice. Unless of course, Intel/AMD buys the patent off of him for some future dual-core cell multiprocessor board!
1400 Watts of power just for the fan? I'm sure Russia has some old nuclear subs you could pull up to your marina and power your machine with.
Ok, I watched the whole thing, and that was soooooo lame. Maybe cuz I do buy organic, or whatever... but damn. It was corny. But it had it's merits.
What they really need to do is show this to the kids as part of health class!:P Or PE! Something. Oh, and the myth about organic being more 'spenive, is false, cuz I actually spend less on organics than anything.
Jho
Ya know what... I live in San Diego, a border city, and I used to live within sight of the border. And let me tell you, I was a whole lot more terrified of the illegals sneaking across the border (attacks on Border Patrol Agents are up 150% over last year) with their drugs and guns.
I live where illegal smuggling causes car accident deaths of innocents every week. Where they live in migrant tent tracts and rape and force women and children to prostitute. And this is why, I carry a gun. I'm a gorgeous redhead with a great body.... I can so get kidnapped and disposed of very quickly. Do me a favor... Google crime in San Diego County. Read any of the local news rags... SignonSanDiego.com is pretty good. Most of the violent crime is committed by crankheads or Mexican Illegals whacked out on meth - the major cheap street drug in TJ).
All of that being said.... I go to Mexico about once a month. I drive my American Car with California plates, and I hang out with my American friends. I *love* my time in Mexico. I go down along Baja, and I have a great time... that was until the Police Chief of Rosarito (where we go) was murdered in cold blood in front of his house... over 100 bullet holes were found in him. I'm sorry, sir, but that's just not safe. I have a great time in Mexico, but does it mean that I am not afraid for my life? NO!!!! That's why I have 2 huge guys on either side of me constantly. Oh, and they are CONSTANTLY screwing over Americans in terms of money. Do yourself a favor, change your money in San Ysidro before you go over!!!! They will buttrape you for $$s to pesos.
I did get pulled over by Federales when I was driving home one midnight. I was scared to death, because they really love to throw Americans in Mexican jails for doing nothing wrong. But the officer was very sweet, and I tried my best to speak what very little spanish I know, and he had me follow him to the highway. He asked me - Do you have any drugs... any guns? Of course not!!!! Like I would say yes if I did.:P
So ya know, there are whole parts of this country for thousands of square miles that are really safe, and perfectly fine to walk around nude in the middle of the street and not have anyone attack you... you might get a laugh or even a ticket, but you won't get abducted, raped and killed. And it's those places, where the 2nd amendment is respected, embraced, and everyone knows old boy might be packing. That's my freedom, my right, and damnit, I WILL PROTECT MYSELF!:D
My original post was discussing way back in the day virii...not current one. And this worm jumped right through our IDS (ISS) system because it was targeted.:) And hell yeah, my network is properly secured. Now if we could only do something about consultants and their laptops. We are now using a policy where they are not allowed to connect to our network because they are usually so infected, it's not funny.
It certainly wasn't very funny when we get hit by it last year. Thank god we have an amazing team that all pulled together, even though they were painting our building the same weekend, and brought all of our production back online before Monday morning. We were still cleaning up systems a month later, though.:(
I've been through several virus scrapes, Slammer, Melissa, Blaster, etc, and I have never seen one hit so fast, and so hard, as this one did. Makes me really miss sneakernet. At least you knew who's floppy was in your slot then!:P
I saw it at both of the two DLP screens in San Diego. The Edwards one sponsored by Hitachi Data Systems was *amazing*! It probably helped that there were NO PREVIEWS, NO COMMERCIALS, NO KIDS, and a theatre full of Star Wars freaks. (it was rather strange that my old boss was at both shows, too) The DLP was *amazing*, the sound crystalline, and we had no technical difficulties or anything.
Then I took my husband to see it at the Mission Valley one. Almost as good, though it wasn't loud enough (Edwards turned it up enough to blast us out of our cushy seats), and there were a lot of children present, though several parents took their kids out (um... duh, PG-13). Most of the problem was that there was no air at all. The place was about 95 degrees by the end of movie, and I was about to pass right out. That, and the big 6'8" magoo that took up all of his chair and half of mine (I'm skinny too!).
But the movie itself was really wonderful. I cried through the last hour just about... the only saving grace being Yoda. I wish they told us how he ended up on Dagoba, though... and how Chewie ended up with Han Solo.:D But those questions I'll have to figure the answers out to myself.
Was it me, or was Natalie Portman just window dressing? Oh wait... it was Hayden's big movie!:P He was *so* much better in his indie films... but I have a great big crush on Darth Vader (like I didn't before) now!!!:P
And wouldn't you know, my fat ass cat broke my AGP port by landing on my video cable so hard that it rocked the card in the mainboard. *fry* Time for a new machine. I would probably need one anyway to support those speeds.
I knew *someday* there would come a valid reason for hiring us girls as Sr. Systems Engineers!!!:P
NOTE: I know more female hackers/destroyers of information than men, and females are a whole lot more sensitive and grudge-holding. Trust me...been there, done that, NEVER GOT CAUGHT!:P:P:P:P (not that it would have mattered... all I did was change some passwords to 'protect them from themselves' in my departure wake)
I'm truly with several of the prior posters - companies should take care to not make their employees so miserable so as to not incur retalitory wrath. California companies need to quit making people so ill and frustrated and upset with them that they quit, so the company doesn't have to pay Unemployment Insurance (so what if we pay into it too???)!!
The problem is, most of these same companies are terrified of a lawsuit if they fire someone for poor performance, whatever, that they will continuously make them miserable to make them quit. And of course, this gives the employee all the ammunition they need to be destructive. Why do they not have the cajones to stand up and FIRE someone who is a consistently bad employee??? Something I never could understand about SoCal IT. Oh, maybe that's the problem right there.... SoCal.:P

RTFA man.... and all you other commenters. Not only does it use a thermal shield instead of tiles, there IS a backup Carbon-Carbon shield.
Also, this is not the final design, this is the one that Lockheed submitted for consideration in the competition. Final one to be chosen in 2008 with manned flights by 2014.
I think that it's 'taking us so long to go go the moon' because the moon is most assuredly dead. It seems that the focus of everything is looking for life, which is great. Either that, or long-term bases on Luna, which is also great. If it's the latter, well, damn skippy it should take more than 15 years!!!! We've never tried to exist on another solar body, let alone one without supportive water or atmosphere.
So, in answer to your question, this design is a stop gap measure to longer-term and better technically advanced systems to further our goal of living, flourishing and colonizing space and other bodies.
I think I have a good answer for you, Molly, and no, it's not the money. It's the courts and our intolerant society. Just look at what is going on in Kansas and Georgia and Texas. We have *got* to do something about the Conservative Christian (right or left, I don't give a fsck about your political orientation... it takes all kinds to stick your head in the sand) constantly trying to subvert what Science has PROVED to be fact.
Now, that being said.. One can say that Darwinian Theory is still a theory. Not a single person has 'evolved' anything of substance... just look at these arguments, brain cells haven't evolved! BUT - many other creatures have evolved, and we do so evolve - it's just usually medically corrected - in the event of a sixth finger/toe, or something like that, they call it a malformity. But how do we prove the regularly evolving cellular species, plant species and animal species that have been documented in the past 125 years since The Origin of Species was published? Oh yeah... that's what Intelligent Design is for.
Don't even get me started on physics/astronomy/nanotech/whatever. My point is, our children are NOT being taught sciences in school. They are being taught theocracy, they are being taught lies, and they are deceived. But this has always been the case!!! This has not changed since the 1970s/80s since I went to school. Probably hasn't changed in 60 years. PLEASE!! My history teacher tried to teach us that the Chinese won the Vietnam War, and I graduated in 1991!!
Go ahead, blame Bush, you know you want to. But you are WRONG. Since when do School Board Administrators talk to Congress for their lesson plans? The NEA is just one big fscking Mob Front for whatever their agenda is this month. Last time I checked, legislatures do not set our local school lesson plans. They don't force our students to carry 8 credits of arts, but only 4 of science and 2 of math! These policies are not set by our national government, but by our state and local legislatures. It's time that the blame start being laid at the appropriate feet of those responsible. Your Governer, State Legislature and City Council administer the schools, not the US Government. Tell me about it... I live in California, the crappiest school admin in the country.
Again, all of that said... The No Child Left Behind Act was supposed to help with all of this. HOWEVER, it uses the carrot and stick (not SCHtick) approach. In order to receive the federal funds, the schools have to pass the standardized tests with an 800 or better, and California cannot do that. http://www.nbcsandiego.com/education/4292821/detai l.html
I don't know what is so hard about educating children to a basic level, but that's just BS. only 21% of the schools pass, and of them, they are middle and elementary schools!! This is where our problem lies, people. Teachers unwilling or untrained to teach. Goes back to the ye olde compensation issue. Compensate them appropriately, we might see some results. Now, I'm not saying that the NCLB Act is not flawed or implemented well, it's not. But, it was a measure taken to try to mitigate some of these issues. And it's not working because the schools don't want it to.
The entire US School System needs to be overhauled... and it all starts with each of us, in our local communities. NOT with President Bush. Just remember that!!
Personally, I'm just shipping my kids to Japan for education!
That's actually quite briliant... if they could find a stable way to do it. I wonder what the implications would be for quantum comuputing? Could we be looking at the future of tiny computers that are as powerful as mainframes in the future?
Done it! Ok, well... Linux running vmware running Windows Server 2003 running VMWare ESX, running Linux.... I guess I have to work that VirtualServer 2005 thing in there somewhere too. *woops*.:P
They do? Do you deal exclusivly with startups with large amounts of venture capital and/or grants? In my 7 years as an IT consultant, I have seen very few companies lay out the cash for a complete, new, integrated setup. Most companies piece their network together.
Ya know... I think I'm one of the few women in the industry who has gotten to do this. I've had the distinct pleasure of an entire HP (ok, in 1991, they were the shiznit) network, from workstation clients to Netware servers, to HP routers.... on ARCNET!:D
I've been around, and in those 15 years, I've gotten to work on a complete integrated setup only times. 78% of the rest of my career was reintegrating all the old stuff.:) Which was where I learned probablky 80% of everything I know! Invaluable experience, and lots of fun 36 hour days.
I wish! I could actually still wear it! :D Assuming I get it within the next 2 years... My ass would probably be too fat otherwise if I stay in IT. :P

In order to receive the federal funds, the schools have to pass the standardized tests with an 800 or better, and California cannot do that. http://www.nbcsandiego.com/education/4292821/deta
*woops*. :P
They do? Do you deal exclusivly with startups with large amounts of venture capital and/or grants? In my 7 years as an IT consultant, I have seen very few companies lay out the cash for a complete, new, integrated setup. Most companies piece their network together.
:D
:) Which was where I learned probablky 80% of everything I know! Invaluable experience, and lots of fun 36 hour days.
Ya know... I think I'm one of the few women in the industry who has gotten to do this. I've had the distinct pleasure of an entire HP (ok, in 1991, they were the shiznit) network, from workstation clients to Netware servers, to HP routers.... on ARCNET!
I've been around, and in those 15 years, I've gotten to work on a complete integrated setup only times. 78% of the rest of my career was reintegrating all the old stuff.
Damn I miss the OLD days!!
Jho
You GO!!! :D
