  1. How about instant replays? on Killing The Fun - Cheating In Online Games · · Score: 2, Interesting

Call of Duty multiplater games show instant replays every time you get killed from the other player's perspective/view. I think this is a cool idea. It would be nicer if you can record that too.

  2. Playing old DOOM games with addons... on Only Xbox Port of Doom 3 Will Have Co-operative Play · · Score: 3, Interesting

I remember the days I played addons and mods with my buddies in DOOM 1 and 2 over dial-up modems and SirDOOM (lets you do 4 players on BBS' with dialup modems). It was much more fun when playing maps that we haven't played before.

I was hoping DOOM 3 (PC port) would have co-operative play like System Shock 2. I guess not. Maybe someone can hack DOOM 3 to have co-op like Sven Co-op.

then why get rid of it?

That's like if my old Pentium II 300 Mhz system still works great without problems, then why do I need to dump it or replace it? It still does my job done (e.g., emails, word processor, etc.) It still can be a server or something. Crazy NASA.

  7. Re:If you're looking for an ATI MMC replacement... on Latest SnapStream PVR App Reviewed · · Score: 1

I use the high default preset recording setting and record about 1.5 GB at good quality (640x480). It beats VCRs and VHS tapes in terms of quality and colors. I watch most of my recordings on TV and they are very good! Note that I do not have cable TV, satellite TV, and HDTV. I only use local basic channels and rabbit ears. You can customize settings. You can recording in SVCD and DivX formats.

I hope that answers your questions.

  9. If you're looking for an ATI MMC replacement... on Latest SnapStream PVR App Reviewed · · Score: 3, Interesting

then please be sure to read this existing thread for a discussion. For me, I haven't found the best one yet. Even Beyond TV didn't fit my needs. It's getting there, but no payment from me. You can read the posts by me, antdude.

I am currently using ATI's buggy MMC v8.9 for now for my Radeon 9800 All-In-Wonder card. Please post a reply if you know any other PVR software that you know will work with these requirements:

    1. Can I install this program with ATI MultiMedia Center (MMC) v8.9 installed? Or do I have to uninstall MMC due to conflicts?

    2. Can I watch scheduled TV shows in Timeshifting mode? Basically, I have the recorder program record an hour TV show from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM. I come home, and I already missed the first 15 minutes. I want to be able to jump into the TV show from the beginning (recorded already) and catch up to the live TV feed (include skipping commercials). This is like TiVo. I don't have to wait until the program finishes recording. MMC is annoying without this method.

    3. Can I record with captions? ATI's MMC VCR video format can, but not DivX, MPEG-2, etc.

    4. Can I watch my recorded shows and Timeshift recordings (in progress) on my TV (TV out fullscreen overlay) and still use my computer on primary screen (monitor)? If so, then can it show captions if available?

    5. Is the low volume a problem since I have a SB Live! card? MMC's recording result very low audio volume.

I hope this helps for other ATI Radeon AIW users who are looking for a MMC replacement.

  10. This should have been about v3.7.1 drivers, but... on ATI Releases Drivers for XFree 4.3.0 · · Score: 3, Informative

v3.7.1 driver was PULLED a few days ago due to many complaints. See this ATI Linux driver forum for the complaints. I had issues with both v3.7.0 (Xscreensaver's OpenGL didn't work) and v3.7.1 (X server didn't start at all) drivers on my old Red Hat Linux 7.2 box.

  15. Looking for a notebook to replace a desktop... on Acer Plans A 16 lb. Notebook · · Score: -1, Offtopic

This a little off-topic from Acer which doesn't seem to have all the features I am looking for.

I am looking for a brand name notebook (e.g., Toshiba, Dell, etc.) for my father. He wants it to be a desktop replacement. It won't be used for gaming, graphic works, or anything).

    1. Internal 3.5" disk drive (yes, he still uses it) and he doesn't want anything external like an USB disk drive.
    2. USB ports
    3. PS/2 port for his mouse if possible. If not, then will buy an adapter or a new mouse.
    4. Parallel (still has old printers) and serial ports (wireless Internet with a cellular modem -- GoMadic.com)
    5. Video out and CRT/LCD out. Projector for work.
    6. DVD-ROM drive that can reads and burns CD-R and CD-RWs. DVD burner isn't important.
    7. Internal network card (not PCMCIA).
    9. PCMCIA slots.
    10. Wireless Internet support.
    11. Internal dial-up Faxmodem for travelling.
    12. Good support like drivers, phone, e-mail, etc.
    13. TV tuner to watch TV while travelling.
    14. No switching/swapping device bays like using 3.5" disk drive over DVD-ROM drive. He wants everything intact in the notebook even if it is heavy.
    15. Available in stores in Southern CA (e.g., Los Angeles) so we can see and try the notebooks before buying one.

As you can see, he wants everything integrated in a latop. It should last about 2+ years before replacing for a new notebook. Speed isn't important since he isn't gaming, doing graphic work, etc. Also, it doesn't need to the top of the line laptops. It can be six months old if they are still sold. Price isn't an issue.

I have looked at CNET reviews and other sources, but have not been able to find a good one. Notebook hunting isn't easy!

    Thank you in advance. :)

  16. Ditto on HDTV On Your PC - ATi's HDTV Wonder · · Score: 1

The PVR software is buggy and limited like a true hardware PVR. For example, how come I can't schedule TV-On-Demand shows? I want to be able to watch, pause, rewind, etc. on scheduled recordings. Using non-default recording presets crashes MMC.exe!

The best PVR software so far is Snapstream's SeeBeyond, but it still has limited features for my needs. For example, no captioning like ATI's VCR format since I am partially deaf.
