  1. What happens to old IT geeks? on Dismantling the Myth of IT Being a Dead-End Career · · Score: 1

What path is there for the it professional in later life? When you're 40, 50, 60 even 65-70 with retirement ages rising what do you do? There is only a finite space for manager/director roles so what do all the older people do?

  2. Re:What? on Australian Labor Party Proposes ISP Level Filter · · Score: 1

People who are smart will of course get around it, but this is not for smart people. It's for the masses and so it'll work just fine. It's also pretty cheap and easy to implement site-specific filtering and most any ISP can do if if they know what a route is and how to make squid work.

Damn, I had mod points and now I can not mod this discussion.

  3. What privacy? on Judge Orders Deleted Emails Turned Over · · Score: 5, Interesting

Look folks.. Privacy simply does not exist. You'll get your search terms read, email copied, if you encrypt you have to give over the keys and if you don't then you get put into prison anyway.

Your phone will be tapped, mobile will be tracked, cars followed with "traffic enforcement cameras". Your DNA will be on file, biometrics saved and your Underground trips logged.

Everywhere you go there are CCTV cameras, face recognition. Your purchases are tracked with credit cards, store loyalty cards and RFID tags. Your bank transactions are flagged if they look interesting and the tax people peer into your account looking for money that suddenly appears.

Because, really, I could have told them that for five quid.. It is really quite obvious..

Recently, in the UK, there was a £250,000 survey scheme to find out why people in Scotland did not ride their bikes to work as much as people in other countries. Their conclusion... "...because it's bloody freezing most of the time in Scotland..."

Now 250,000 quid would have purchased enough CDRWs to give a copy of slackware to 250,000 people (excluding jewel cases and labels)..

I think that money wasted on painfully obvious conclusions is a major problem for people who want to switch to Linux on the desktop.

Next, when we're all watching TV and doing our VoIP on the net, all have our home security systems on the net then the government 'sees' everything, 'knows' everything and you have entered into the police state where you can't even move without it being reported on.
