Add to the list the need for reference letters from your jobs during past 5 years.

Actually this is pervasive in Australia...you need reference letters from people who have known you for 2 years to get a bank account, a mortage, opening a business, whatnot.
To rent a place, you need to give the past 2 or 3 addresses you've been.

I applied for PR in Oz and moved over there when I got it. In spite of this I still had to overcome the chicken and eggs problem of knowing no one and no one knowing me (so who could vouch for my being an honest and 'moral' person)

On the other hand people coming from UK seem to be familiar with this kind of BS...which was probably exported to Oz in the first place. Together with uniforms at school, hence the need for suits.

As a migrant in Oz, though, once in the workplace, it's all good if you can deliver.
Don't expect to make too much money though. And forget about sharing in the success of the company, for example with stock options.

Finally, examine the tax situation before you move in any case!

  17. Muslim intransigeance, territory on Business Under Fire · · Score: 1

Consider that, before 1967, jews could not go and pray to the temple wall in Jerusalem. It was not about waiting 3 hours at some checkpoint. When israel was then attacked, they took the whole of jerusalem city and people could go to the temple for the first time of their lives. I am not religion oriented, but for jews, there is only one holy site: the temple wall. They cannot just give it away and be denied access ever after. I find it funny that muslims are claiming so many holy sites and cities all over middle east and persia. Why did they build the al-aqsa mosque right above the temple site? Why did talibans blast an historic buddha in afghanistan? Why do they wish to deny access to al-aqsa to non-muslims? That does not seem very fair, and shows lots of intransigeance. Israel gave back the Sinai (a huge territory compared to israel) to Egypt, and more recently Taba (where an hotel was bombed even more recently). What other country gave back territory seized in in battle from its attacker? They made quite a few concessions already, to no avail. Israelis are weary to give away more territory because it may represent just one more step to being pushed out to the mediterranean. Palestinians may be victims of the all-or-nothing attitude of their rulers.

  24. Crippling, ecosystem on Why Apple Should Port Games · · Score: 1

I'm no addict to FPS. The only game that matters to me is X-Plane, and it exists on Mac. Hell, it was developed on a mac. The author seems to claim easier, faster development on Mac.

    Crippling:
I have an ibook and a powerbook, and a big flat-screen TV. I cannot play it at an adequate resolution on the big screen using the ibook because apple decided to disabled screen spanning. The display is limited to mirroring, where I don't use the LCD's available resolution, a crying shame. I don't think any PC maker would deliberately cripple their hardware... Also, PCI graphic cards for powermac are notoriously more expensive than their x386 equivalent. Why is that? Is there a technical reason I cannot move my graphic card from a PC to a Mac and vice versa?

These limitations hamper the development of an ecosystem where PCs and Macs can compete head to head.
This ecosystem existed on the apple2 and the PC and made their success.
