iPhone 6 user here, two things piss me off: 1. Running out of battery 2. Stupid Apple LIghtning plug.
I bought a battery case from Anker, it adds a bit of heft to my phone, but it addresses both of my issues. The battery case charges via micro USB, so now instead of keeping track of this silly lightning cable, I just charge my phone through the battery case with the same cable I use to charge everything else I own.
In Battlestar Galactica, the humans are facing the Cylons technologically superior force with advanced cyberweaponry.
Doesn't that make us (the USA) the Cylons? Sure China is a threat, but I haven't heard of any damage from any Chinese 'attack.' I have, however, heard of Stuxnet, which had real economic, political and technological consequences.
Being an engineer is about learning how to solve problems.
'Asking Slashdot' is about getting other people to solve your problems.
If you want to be an engineer, you had better learn how to start solving your own problems, or answering questions like the one you posed, by yourself. That's my best advice for getting into your chosen field.
Went back through and actually read the OP. The comparison is absolute shit, there's no mention of input/output speeds on any of the devices, and no clear methodology for handing out scores... advertisement disguised as reporting.
Dear Slashdoters. I know that you can build a better, faster, cheaper NAS that will perform fellatio over SSH and wipe your ass for you.
But, I don't care... at all. According to you, I overpaid for my two NAS devices, a Drobo FS (serving media) and a Synology DS211+ (photo backups (profoto)). But I'm exceedingly happy with them. Transfer speed is sufficient on the Drobo to serve 1080p content to 2 tv's and an iPad simultaneously, and the Synology keeps up with my image editing software just fine. I've upgraded the drives in the drobo once so far, and just like their videos claim, everything just worked. The Drobo survived a drive failure last year, in the middle of 'movie night,' and video playback from the drobo was unaffected. - I'm glad that these NAS devices were reviewed, but I can't imagine why so many have come to this thread to post their server builds. The people, like myself, buying these NAS devices are buying them so we don't have to build our own servers.
The Lockheed design has a single engine... Which is a bad idea on an airplane.
It's good to think to the future, but none of these ideas are practical, and I don't think they're meant to be. Airplanes don't change in leaps and bounds they evolve slowly, building on proven technology and designs. These are just concepts produced because these companies feel they have to show something new and radical in return for taking all of nasa's money.
It might not be around as long as FITS, but isn't DjVu more suited for the digitization of manuscripts?
The Vatican isn't choosing FITS because it's more suited towards digitization of manuscripts. The church intends to be around literally forever and they're choosing FITS because it too, should be around as long as there is SCIENCE! From the FITS wikipedia article: 'FITS was designed with an eye towards long-term archival storage, and the maxim once FITS, always FITS represents the requirement that developments to the format must not render invalid existing files using older versions.'
"I'm currently starting up an exciting new company, Zink Foods. We are poised to revolutionize your perception of "healthy food" by combining taste and nutrition in a completely unprecedented way. Finally, real food, real taste, real nutrition!"
This sounds like a real expert that we should listen to? I guess it's not that hard to use slashdot to drive up your pageviews afterall.
I see lots of data theft / data loss. It seems that every month 100k+ people are affected when a company looses their personal information. I see these companies claim that they have no proof that the data is being used / read. I see these companies apologise for the loss and apologise for the inconvience and apologise for not keeping better track of customer data. I don't see the MASSIVE fines needed to get these companies to stop loosing our data.
Until the cost of loosing data becomes greater than the cost of maintaining an EFFECTIVE and SECURE data storage/backup process this isn't going to stop... ever.
Just so y'all know, Peter Jackson was made an Exec Producer because he is allowing the movie to use Weta Digital and Weta Workshop for all their graphic needs and knowing that it will be a video game adapt, there will likely be lots of rendering needed. Also, by making Jackson an EP, they can slap Wingnut films on it (his banner) and give it instant credibility. Jackson probably won't have much in terms of creative input but then again this is normal for an EP. Just thought I would weigh in for those folk who don't know much about the film buisiness.
I can't tell you how few people remember to backup their dictionary when they backup a computer. I worked as an intern in the IT department at my school and tech savy faculty members would regularly loose 3+ years of work on a custom dictionary because they failed to back it up. I suggest you just struggle through, and add all the words to the dictionary, but remember to keep a copy somewhere.
The ability to customize your dictionary is something that most people in the tech world don't talk about much, but I use it every day of my life: by day I work at a computer retail store, but at night and on the weekends I'm a writer and a custom dictionary keeps me from screwing up proper nouns that I am using.
Props to Parent, your dead on. The XBox has never been about playing games, it's about getting a PC hooked up to your TV. Demographics show that the younger a person is, the more likely they are to start using tech in a new way (example: The video iPod... old(er) people aren't expected to embrace watching video on their iPods, this is marketed at the younger generation) so by appeaing to the gamer demographic (12-22) they are putting their hardware in the hands of the people that are most likely to give all the features of Windows Media Center a try.
It's actually a very smart move. They may be loosing money on the xbox, but they are just doing the same thing that Japan did when they took over the american TV market by selling their products at a loss to get customers. Also, one of the reason microsoft is so hard to compete with is the fact that they can afford to loose massive ammounts of cash, Sony and Nintendo are both profitable, microsofts gaming devision isn't but it doesn't matter because they are prepared to sell at a loss to get floorspace under your TV.
This is pretty much the ultimate setup: once they get the xbox in your home, they can go to the entertainment industry and offer something like XXXmillion homes + xx% with high speed connections(xbox live) + xx% intrested in online services(xbox live) + target audience, and set up something along the lines of the ITMS, but for video, and since it's running windows, they can DRM the shit out of it, and there you have it. Microsoft enters into the video on demand service / video download (permanently/rental) using the xbox as a set top box.
I'm not going to say that I hate microsoft, because I don't, I dislike the fact that so many people are dependent on windows as an operating system, and that microsoft doesn't make much of an efford to make the OS better, but you have to respect the idea here, and their execution.
This is only worth it if:
1) You are a huge Star Trek Fan (no problem I'm sure these people are out there)
2) You are a fan of 4+ of the serries: It's cheaper to buy any 3 seasons individually + all the movies
3) You aren't already collecting the dvds.
Now here is my POV: I am a huge tv on dvd collector but there is a limit to how much I am willing to spend (example: I'm going to pick up the BuffyBox when it comes out, even though I already have the first four seasons.) I am also a fan of all of Star Trek, and would love to pick this up, except for the fact that I bought TNG as it came out, DS9 as it out and voyager as it came out.
I'm not saying that this is intended for everyone, infact if they sell more then say, a thousand of them, I will be impressed.
Anyway just my $.02
oh and wtf is with Enterprise costing 120+ per season before discounts?
I remember flying to london with my parents when I was 8 so about ~11 years ago. We had just sat down, me next to my father, and my brother behind me with my mother. As the last passengers sat down, my father grabed my hand and gestured at the seat across the isle. Mr. Doohan sat down and while we didn't talk to him, there was something special about being in his presence. A few days later, me and my father went out to go get breakfast early in the morning, and we ran into Mr. Doohan again, getting tea in the same shop we were in, we exchanged hellos and we told him that we really appreciated his work and he winked at us and said goodbye. 3

I know this really isn't the topic, but I keep all my emergency info as both notes, and.docs on my ipod, and all of my important info (scans of drivers licence / cc numbers) pgp encrypted on my iPod aswell... I have it with me almost 100% of the time I am away from home, so if I need to leave in a hurry, I won't loose all my important stuff.
In order for Firefly to come back to TV, Serenity has to do very well in theaters, and has to attract a wider audience then just the fans of Firefly. Like Farscape, Firefly was canceled because it "failed to attract fans" on a per episode basis, that is the numbers didn't go up after each show, and while this was entierly Fox's fault for skiping the pilot and jumping straight to the second episode. In a conversation with a studio distributor, he said that the studio wished they had released this film earlier in summer because it would have "run all summer long." The distributor claimed that test audiences were reacting the same way they reacted to Star Wars. This info comes from my chats with some loyal browncoats and information picked up from the official firefly fanclub that was eaten buy the serenity movie website.
When I see "things" like this happening, it brings two questions to mind. First, why would a network cancel a show when there is obvious fan appreciation. I know the answer to this is money, but when I look at shows like the much loved and ill treated Firefly, or Scifi's Farscape, I wonder why these shows got canceled in the first place.
Farscape was canceled because it "failed to grow" beyond it's viewer base from season to season, and Firefly was doomed from the start (they aired the pilot second, and the second episode first, they also didn't air the whole season. But this leads up to the second question: Why don't studios care about the fan campaigns?
Save Farscape wrote over thirty thousand letters, and Save Angel wrote in just over twenty. These are not just a few random fans. As fans of Firefly, we donated tons of copies of the serries on DVD to the US navy to get coppies on board most of the ships. Fan's of Firefly even created music videos as trailers to a movie months in advance of the movie even being announced. I can't wait until Serenity comes out this summer, serenity for those who don't know is the Firefly movie.
"It is nice to see that countries like India are trying to research communication techniques in backward and rural areas."
Who are we to call part of India "backward"? The Indian people are making enormous progress in a comparable short ammount of time. The Indian people have launched satalites for purley educational purposes and are determined to fight illiteracy in their country. In many ways the Indian attitude towards education is superior to our own.
1. We are relying on NASA to come up with a model of how the thing is supposed to run. This is just giving NASA another chance to screw up their math or something.....Smart Move...
2. Why have this software onboard? If all it's going to do is suggest fixes, run it from the ground. If it can only fix software, then why does it have to be on the actual craft. It seems to me that NASA can press the nuke russia button, and then if the satalite doesn't nuke russia, NASA knows there is a problem. Anyway, I don't understand why you would run this program on the satalite instead of run all your commands to the satalite thorugh this program before transmitting. But then again... I am only a senior in high school.
