It should be noted that the Homestar popups do not occur on IE 6.0, even the pre-SP1 version. I'll have to check more extensively to see what happens with Firefox in Windows versus what happens in Linux.

I'm not exactly fond of the MS Knowledge Base-esque way of dealing with problems such as the Flash thing. (e.g. Q: System X has problem A: Disable System X) You may prefer not installing Flash, but unlike some people in here, I'd rather not be in a minimalist contest with my system. (e.g not having to browse the web by typing wget www.webz2crapshop.com > crap.txt && htmlparse crap.txt | grep "shopping cart" <><><>(*^/s) > /dev/toilet)

Try getting a No-CD patch off of gamecopyworld.com and watch a couple popups come up in Firefox.

Plus, check out the Strong Bad email, Virus, and see an instance of Homestar's face (Click on the Monkey!!) popping up in a new Firefox window among all the fake popups that are part of the Flash animation.

It's no surprise either. Remember when Team Fortress was big? Pretty much all the hardcore players stayed on the original Quake version of it because Team Fortress Classic's extremely subtle physics changes screwed up the ability to do neat tricks in the game in their minds.

It's hard enough getting TF players to play better-looking versions of 2fort4 because there's always something wrong with it. Gotta stick with the one that looks like it was made by an 8-year-old.

Seeing the complaints of CS:S, I'm hoping this will bring players back to deathmatch. I always found vanilla deathmatch and Deathmatch Classic in HL1 to be quite fun, but there were 5E200% times as many Counterstrike servers as there were deathmatch servers at any given time, making it impossible to play due to lack of availibility (I then resorted to bots).

You forget to mention that there was really no surprise to teleporting in the original Doom games. By the time you heard the sound, you could run 30 MPH and be a football field away from the monster if you wanted to.

Oh yeah, and it didn't take ten shotgun blasts to kill an imp that jumps highway speeds towards your character, who gets outrunned by a Lark.

The original Dooms didn't stoop to the level of epic spider battles either. If there's one thing common of all FPS games within the last five years, it's fucking spiders that jump at you, spit crap at you, and take 50 rounds of .50 cal ammunition to kill, despite being the size of a vinyl record. I believe Something Awful did a couple front page articles on this subject. (I'm, of course, not referring to big spiders with plasma guns, etc., at least those were supposed to be slow and heavy)

  18. Surround is quiet on Doom 3 Now Supports Surround Sound · · Score: 2, Interesting

I just installed the new Linux version of Doom 3 over the first release and got to hear surround right away (after setting surround in the menu). One thing that bothers me - and this is occurs in the Windows version too - is that the rear surround channels are too quiet. There needs to be some sort of rear channel adjustment in the game if simply hardcoding the volume up conflicts with other people's configurations in which the volume is just fine.

No other game that uses surround has this problem. The UT2004 demo used to have a quiet sound problem on all channels on both Windows and Linux, but that got solved rather quickly.

I guess I should mention I have an SBLive! Value (4-channel version of the EMU10K1), but it shouldn't matter much, considering it has a pretty large user base.
