Case in point. The.iq (iraq) domain STILL hasnt been handed back to the government of Iraq.
That just goes to show you how little influence is exerted by the US government on the internet. Do you really think the administration wouldn't love to have a big ceremony "reopening" the.iq domain?
Like people have been saying. It is not broken. Don't fix it. And moreso please don't let the UN fix it. I wouldn't be worried about many of the European contries some crontrol, but letting China get anywhere close to even having any say on controlling the internet is incredibly stupid.
Exactly, if Microsoft wants to compete for government business in Massachusetts they will have to "innovate" and support Opendocument format in Office.
Absolutely no one is stopping them.
This flake is arguing that they're shouldn't be only one document format that government uses because there should be only one document format that the government uses, just not the one they picked.

I think your sig says more about why no one's going into engineering than the story does. Until engineers get interviewed for nearly every job they apply for, and have some choice of jobs and mobility in the workforce, I DON'T CARE if there aren't any new engineers out there. Bring on the much talked about shortage of engineers.
There is no demand out there in the job market at this time to justify anyone going into engineering right now. Companies crying about not being able to find engineers in this country are just hypocrites looking for an excuse to outsource all of our technology development.
nobody can pay for techies with enough brainpower to even hack Firefox.
You're on to something there, except its not that nobody can, its that nobody will. But they're getting what they paid for.
There are actually quite a few Linux advocates in IT my company (a very large company). The only problem is that a lot of the Windows people here are actively hostile to linux and refuse to look at anything new. I have to (or choose to) know both Linux and Windows, but they don't have the guts to even try Linux.
You just have to wonder how a convicted Monopoly would be allowed to buy any other company in the computer industry!!!
Hello, wheres the SEC in this kind of stuff? I mean every Oracle looks to buy out something they throw a hissy fit (although still end up letting oracle buy up competitors) but Microsoft should have hurdles even higher to get over, but when they look to buy something NO ONE in any type of oversight role says ANYTHING!!
I know, I know, they've bought everyone out. But it would be nice if our antitrust law was actually worth the paper its written on.
Mr. Denney has his work cut out for him then. Because the "false positives" are still true bullshit. Its not like Tivo owners are going just go "ok well delete my show then I know its only a mistake".
This is a big PR screw up for Tivo. Once the darling of the Linux world, they now are snivelling minon of the "Content Providers" (damn that term pisses me off).
As it is I am already a MythTV user and as such I will use whatever means I can to maintain ALL my fair use rights against this onslaght of bullshit DRM policies.
I know, but thats pretty sad. I've always liked a nice drive in the country. However in South Dakota, after about 3 hours of driving in the country, you're really ready to just get there.
What baffles me about the people that you are speaking about is how much they belive to "know". I mean I've been to big cities, but also live in a rural (by city measurements anyway) community. These people often times see no need to see the outdoors, or wide open spaces, and just live within their cityscape. Both the city and the country are awe inspiring, for completely different reasons.
You know, this brings up a curious though I had a few weeks ago. On a trip to New Jersey (I'm from South Dakota), I noticed more fields and small farms, and hell even barns, then I expected to be there.
I have heard over and over again that people from the city don't know anything about ploughs, or tractors, or hell even cows. But here I was less than 80 miles from New York city itself, seeing fields of wheat or alfalfa, small dairy cow operations, and whatnot. All I could think of is that they must have tractors, threshing machines, baling machines, ploughs, etc. They would need all that stuff, and here they were in the shadow of the big city.
It would be my guess that stamping DENIED on a patent application and throwing it in the trash would be far easier thatn accepting these crappy patents. I mean if one of the only things that EVERYONE on/. can agree with is that software patents are bogus, it wouldn't be that hard for the patent office to train their examiners to reject them.
Its simple: 1) It the patent for software? 2) ????? 3) The round file....
Oh and step 2 could be "Is it a business process patent?"
The patent office may be short of people, but their deficiency in common sense is orders of magnitude greater.
You argue fairly well, it would be even better if you backed of on the ad homeniem attacks.
You have so many issues with capitalism, its amazing. The big thing I think you miss is that what really keeps american capitalism working is the middle class and not the super rich. Sure there are super rich, and sure their skills and their importance to society may be out of wack with what they should be (ie. the cop vs. the athelete), but really for the great majority of Americans, capitalism works. When the middle class has issues it will raise its political voice. I really think that there is a potential for a third party to really shake things up at the moment. There is a vast undercurrent of opinion out there on issues where the Democrats and the Republicans just simply hold the same position, this makes them vunerable for a third party to come in, when that happens it will be middle class voters who will get them into office (or force change from the other parties).
You really sound like you would have done better as an indian in pre-Columbous america. They are the only type of egalitarian society I can think of that might have ever really fit your mindset. Of course that is internal to each tribe, from tribe to tribe there was confilct and fighting, but its closer to what appears to be your dream than anything else. But on of the reasons they could be like this was the extreme abundance of resources they had in relation to their population size.
C'mon admit it, you've actually read and believe Carl Marx haven't you?
Communism as described by Marx is the ideal political system. In practice the human nature of the (required) party leaders always turns them into manacial dictators, since they have to by definition control EVERYTHING!! Marx was an idiot, well intentioned maybe, but an idiot none theless. Communist governments that move away from communism always move to a more free market economy (of course its the only direction they can go). While you claim that China is more Fascist than communist and you are correct, the Facist leanings come from the fact that they haven't yet completely let go of their control of the people (a holdover from communism). Eventually as the free market economy in China matures, more an more people will gain more economic power and from that they will also eventually gain a voice in their government (you are only really pretending that they had one under communism).
In the end property rights are the only thing that shows that you are free. If you can have things that are "yours", then you are free, if nothing is yours, you are not. The utopian philosophy that everything is "ours" never works out.
The only problem is that IT cerifications aren't the medical boards or the bar. They're a trivial imitation. If some entry qualifications were required maybe they'd mean something. I've always viewed them as excuses to dumb down the requirements level for IT jobs such as to make them not require advanced degrees for positions.
Even engineering licensing is much more rigorous than any of these IT Certificates, but businness has frowned so much on the apprenticeship and work necessary to get licensed that in many fields (including almost anything computer related) most of the engineers aren't licensed.
Most of ITs certificates are a scam.
Note, I'm not saying that trainging isn't important, it is, but certification in IT today is just a piece of paper.
Actually I think its a cool idea. I think the feasability issues would be the stregth of the teather. If you snap the line, you are hosed. Its just a guess, but my bet would be that the teather would have strength/weight/size requirements that wouldn't be that far off from the kind of material needed for the space elevator.
Case in point. The .iq (iraq) domain STILL hasnt been handed back to the government of Iraq.

Nope he stole the click wheel idea from Mattel. Haven't you ever seen an Intellivision controller??
You mean they've already arrested everyone behind moveon.org?
Oh, wait, they haven't. Well I guess thats why its different.
Also, gaining more socioeconomic freedom is exactly why more people in China are pushing for more political freedom.
Vi would I want to learn emacs????

Hey he was describing hotmail...
;-)
Ok, so he should have used absolute worstest!!
The author of the story said Koch had never told him directly that he had used dead cats as the story implied.
Ok, but it would be cool if he did.
Can you tell I'm not a cat person??
It's like people who's entire political philosophies are capable of being summed up by bumper stickers. You just feel sad for them.
This is true but in the the case of Microsoft vs. Google, both their slogans fit on bumper stickers.
Google: Don't be evil
Microsoft: Be evil

Isn't this kind of obvious....
Father of world wide web says that the world wide web is good for children!
What else is he going to say? I mean I agree with him, but he isn't exactly an impartial observer.
And besides, why send an image to Stevie Wonder anyway????
Theres a simple solution to this. Just make the payment of the fee the same whether the patent was granted or not.
I know that this would decrease the number of patents they have to review eventually, but hey they're the ones saying they're overworked.
It would be my guess that stamping DENIED on a patent application and throwing it in the trash would be far easier thatn accepting these crappy patents. Nope, I took the EIT test, which really sucked, but I did pass it.
The only problem is that IT cerifications aren't the medical boards or the bar. They're a trivial imitation. If some entry qualifications were required maybe they'd mean something. We're always 5-10 years away from true breaktrhoughs, which 5-10 years from now are still 5-10 years away.
;-)
See: Flying Car
I think the previous statement about 20 years is a fairly balanced guess, but we'll see about that 20 years from now.
How do you sleep at night? ;-)
