This is a very dangerous situation. More laws = less freedom, plain and simple. If you need a law to defend you're freedom, its only because the idiots in congress are looking at taking that freedom away. Hell sometimes there are laws (constitutional amendments even) that should protect us, but they just IGNORE those.

The Supreme Court should start to exercise a policy of immediate judicial review of any bills that they think are unconstitutional, no waiting on a challenge. Congress is openly thumbing its nose at very many of our rights, the court should begin to smoke any of the unconstitutional crap they're coming up with before we the people even have to deal with it.

No law in this case would be a good law.

I think you're wrong on a couple of fronts. At work my group supports about 50-60 palm users. These people alomst all use the palm exclusively for scheduling their appointments and to-do lists. Games are pretty much a sideshow. My palm is used for (in order), my schedule, to do list, contact list, notes, and then for games.

My son also has both a pixter and a gameboy. Both devices are remarkably different. The pixter focuses mostly on educative games and in actuallity hoing the skills necessary for using a PDA. The games are fairly interesting an centered on learning mostly. The anamation cartrige enables the creation of simple cartoon style animation. The gameboy is a pure gaming machine and pretty nice at that. My son uses the gameboy more. But depending on his mood and what kind of activity he wants to do will judge which device he picks. The gameboy is definately the higer energy more intense device, but the pixter is the more engaging thinking and creativity toy.

It's amazing how much Microsoft relys on users being absolutely scared to death to use something other than windows. If kids learn its not really all that different to use a windows machine as it is to use an Apple or Linux w/ Gnome or KDS, then thats a good thing. Maybe all those single GUI arguments will go by the wayside, too. We should be teaching our kids how to run a computer not exactly what button to click. GUI environments are alike enough that you should be able to teach students the basic concepts that make any GUI workable.

It doesn't have ENOUGH value. Cringely wrote an article a couple of week ago and stated an axiom about how "Creating something 10X cheaper that does what you current equipment does or creating something 10X faster for the same price will enable you to take over the market."

HDTV fails both these principles, it is orders of magnitude more expensive, and the quality is not the same orders of magnitude better. It can't use price or quality as leverage, because its too expensive and although better quality, not enough to justify the expense for most people.

Look for digital TV to fail and for increasing consumer unrest until Digital TV's are only twice as expensive, or less, than regular TV's. Then expect a big blow up over pay-per-view. The only way to add enough value for me to pay per show it to 1. Allow me to watch it anytime and pause and resume it. 2. If I pay for it it will have NO COMMERCIALS, the public will not pay for the privelege of watching commercials. 3. It better be good, a lot of TV nowdays it background noise, or whatevers on, people won't pay unless they really want to see the show.

I feel your pain, quite literally. I to work at an FDA audited location and we are delving into the EVIL realm of "Computer Validation".

The part I like the most, is that apart from creating all your own apps, its almost impossible to validate. Almost all (by that I mean I that there might be one that does) purchased software doesn't meet the Validation requirements. For stuff you make yourself you still have to cover the OS, the Language and processes you use, any minisucle change to the machine, etc. ad naseum.

To the other reply to this message, it doesn't matter if you try to validate Open Source vs. Closed Source, you're pretty much screwed either way.

This is way the proposed CDBTPA scares the hell out of me. Congress is actually suggesting that if Hardware and Software makers can't come up with workable copy protecttion schemes one will be forced on them. Judging by what the FDA has come up with for Software Validation, I am deathly serious when I say that what they would come up with in the CDBTPA's case would probably destroy civilization as we know it.
