This is not a new topic many big guys have already used the Open Source to make profit. Take a look at Apple's Darwin project or Novell(SuSE). These companies can now focus more on there business's goals instead of working out bugs within operating system and spend extra resources to devote to coding the OS,instead, they use the Open Source Community to do it.
I am optimistic, but if firefox can get around 25-50% of the market we could see more people using open source products. I think with many Open source products that are not popular is the fact they are not so easy to use. Firefox has figured that out. They have even made it easier in Firefox 1.5 by having automatic updates and force pop-ups into tabs. If the rest of the open source community can look at firefox and take some ideas like ease of use people may start going toward open source other than people like myself. Some already have like Novell and IBM putting a nice GUI to many difficult applications to make it easier for everyday people to admin or use as a desktop.Hay, If i can get my girlfriend into open source like firefox and thunderbird i think their might be a new era of applications coming from open source development.
Use some common sense people. GUI = overhead. The interface is going to make normal people more productive, but people like myself GUI gets in the way I am a Linux User and console is very productive you just have to learn to use it. You know get some technical knowledge. Stop being lazy! For example, my gf has complained about M$ being slow and crashing so I told her about Linux and she did not want to go for it because M$ is nicer looking. I also tried to take off all the bells and whistles off on the interface, but she complained it was ugly. I now realize people want eye candy not true productivity. So please stop thinking that all the additional bells and whistles M$ has added is going to make you work efficiently it is just a psychological effect of looking at a screen that is aesthetically pleasing. All in all M$ is less productive has more flaws and is only good for common people to be productive because they do not want to learn more than they have too.
The Idea of.xxx as a new domain is a excellent idea, but I have a suggestion. As many of you know porn sometimes pops up my accident. For example I had a student stumble onto www.whitehouse.com (Porn Site) instead of going to www.whitehouse.gov. Hopefully in the future most if not all the porn industry will move into a domain name that suggests only being porn. Maybe they should also have.porn domain? I hope that ideas like this will save innocence until they are of age. You do not see 8-year-old going into porn stores in the middle of a business district in most places than why should the internet be any different.
Gene Spafford was interviewed by linuxplanet couple of years ago. He says why linux isn't completely secure, even though it is a outdated interview, I will like to say most of his ideas do make sense even today.
Even if those honeypots are harder to penetrate that does not mean drivers, or individual applications that many people use are designed with security in mind first. Hackers are always going to be around all this means is that script kiddies are going to be able to do less and less to break into a linux but but more sophisticated hackers are going to want to try harder and within time. You will have the same problems just like in real life a ADT system can make your home safer does not mean you still will not get broken into. Plus, within this article you should be asking who are the security experts?
All in all I would hope people read this article in hopes that linux is their solution too security out of the box. In other words if you believe in security do not rely on the distro. to be 80% secure even if you locked the system up tight like your suppose too you still have a good chance of getting hacked. This article is just showing business people in the IT world that they can setup linux and not need a administartor with good experise to be hired instead of that person they can pay half as much with little experence to manage the network because linux is so secure. See where I am going with this article?
I use firefox to begin with only because it is as close to W3C standards as you can get now a days. IE6 like all the IE products released by Microsoft have had these problems with security. I have been using Linux (9 years) and Mac OS X( 3 years) and unfortunately because of my job and school had to use Microsoft. If anyone is surprised about this they should wake up. More people need to complain to Microsoft because as a business they will continue to slack unless consumers put them in there place.
Speaking about consumers my girlfriend and all her friends are not computer savvy all of them refused to delete IE and use firefox. [Note: 2 months got gf to switch from IE to firefox! Next step Linux...]. So telling people to use another product lets be realistic the majority of people that use MS and not computer savvy tell them to change is like pulling teeth.
GPA is a number that tells many employers only one aspect of the new hire. I am Dyslexic and currently have a GPA of 2.85, yes not 3.85. I try my best in every class. GPA does not tell you what you learned in a class. In my programming classes I have a 3.5 GPA that is because most of the exams are not multiple choice. I have to write out many concepts I am being taught or worse write out pseudo code, but other courses are not the same! For example, in psychology, which I have a minor in I hold a GPA of 2.5, currently, because most exams are multiple choices and as a dyslexic I tend to do better in exams, that focuses on concepts not pure facts. Take classes you can say even if I get a good grade or bad grade what will I get out of it? That same question made me switch from Computer Science with a Mathematics degree toward Computer Science with a Economics Degree with a minor in Psychology.
Before I went to college I worked full-time as a programmer at the University of Chicago Physicians Group. After working for a year I leaned that school will help me more than work. I now only take classes I think will help develop my character as Plato had intended University life to do. Good grades are nice, but the learning experience is what you should be in school for so remember if you et a C in a class it is Average and no one in this world is Above Average as much of our society may think. The rest of Joel's words are bible read it do it if you want a nicer job. Just remember grades are just one piece of the equation. Just focus and do your best and have fun while your at it!
PS THAT DOES NOT MEAN GET BAD [D,F] GRADES EITHER!
I agree with you 90% but how would we monitor a person from entering a chat room. This seems like a double-edge sword. If you prohibit people for lets say even a year from entering a chat room resources have to tap his equipment to check if he is not defying his probation, but this would deal with giving up our privacy. So we really want the courts to get involve at this kind of level? Also remember a very good criminal especially a cracker is more savvy than most investigators if you don't include NSA or CIA when it comes to cyberspace.
Malware is obviously going to happen within any new technology introduced, but I think by focusing on strictly malware giving the capabilities of this new technology is not what people should really worry about. This is why you should look at this from my viewpoint. Your infected by a new virus you have many options like using an antivirus software or as extreme as a reformat and reinstalling your OS. Now lets look further then malware... Know you can index your whole computer and maybe make it searchable for the world to see your personal files. One example to look at is a ad agency wants your personal information to customize advertisements to you because your more likely to purchase it than if they randomly throw the ads out to x number of people. Many other companies can use this to look up personal info they can not get their hand on like medical insurance company finds out you have a backup slip of your diagnoses of HIV (Your premium now increases). Use your imagination before you think this technology is a good thing as I have learned most of the time security and ease of use does not go together.
Most of society does not use any method of encryption. I would like to send private messages to my friends encrypted but no does. If not encrypted signed to make sure i am who i say i am. The last place I worked had a policy to use PGP encryption on all emails, but for the normal computer user and I would think some organizations will not encrypt email or anything for that matter. I think OpenPGP and PGP Commercial needs to do a better job marketing their product. I wish everyone could use PGP but I think I will have gray hair before I will see that.
Why are our math skills horrible in the United States? I would have to say it has a lot to do with our curriculum in the states. I am coming from a state that has the under average SAT scores in the nation. In my middle school and high school are still teaching kids basic mathematics instead of algebra.
No child left behind... We are behind in our math skills, which are incredibly important to keep our country competitive within this global market. I came into college with very little calculus to survive. I have notice in my school I am not the only person that feels under prepared.
Our government has to realize that tactic without strategy is going to do nothing. No Child left behind has to push teachers more into looking into the overall curriculum and not just how to boost test scores!
I am a little cynical here but AI + stupid users = more stupid users
In the future war will be waged with information and education making AI do most of the work for you in lets say research is like a double wedged sword. Lets see how this will evolve.. I hope google gets in gear and wacking this new search engine. Nice to see good competition
I am very afriad of the future of the world. I mean look at laws the the patroit act in america and now this? The US is starting to look like the book 1984. Looking at many of these laws that ment to protect americans can also be used to harm the ideals of this country. It would be nice to think these new technology will help determain why a situation has happened but no one really looks into protecting the individuals rights. They should only use these devices to see if there was anything wrong with the car's hardware/software and then to rule out a malfunction. This technology should not be used to determain the users speed or how the car was operated. If you already rule out a malfunction you can assume it was the user without any other data. If the user was flying at 100mph other then giving him a ticket thier is not much you can do to correct the problem short of brainwashing and ticketing the person will do it regardless. This is my 2cents on this topic. Any slashdotters also agree with this way of handling this technology?
You have to be kidding right System Administrator Appreciation Day? Rondy Dangerfield said it best I get no respect! That is a day and a life of a System Admin...
I have to agree many end-users are dumb, but as a Computer Scientist we some times think too technical and less end-user. Many people that work for microsoft are very talented people. I am sorry to say it is the management within M$ that is the problem. Maybe it is a start with Service Pack 2 now but lets look at the end-user and standards many organizations put in place. IE for example is an abomination to web standerds not only it is seems to be completely unmantained as much as it should be but there are also many other problems wrong with IE. Back to the end-user (eg. my gf for example is not going to switch to fire or opera I tried!!! Sorry but people are used to it.) It is the responsibility of M$ to start getting on the ball with IE. On the other hand, I am happy with SP2 it will sting but that is how upgrades should be if they are good. Example I worked for 2 years in Networking and found that everytime we upgraded something would break if it was critical we would delay the upgrade to our production side of our networks and even then their can be problems. I am happy that m$ is seeing they have to balance end-user and security with this update... may be there is some hope to see a standard compliant IE in the near future.
I really never heard not being able to copy data. If the High tech method of copy does not work why don't they just copy it into a other mainframe physically.. more expensive.. and time consuming but i bet it would work ? Opps i said more expensive.. it will never happen never mind cheap B*st*rds I bet there are many other methods available to copy the data... O well
This sounds like a very nice freedom, but think of all the evil that can be done with a unstanderized network.WUAHAHAHA... I am always kinda pessimistic about these things, but Anywho thanks FCC for OPEN WIRELESS BANDWIDTH !!!
It seems that this post should be in a forumn or billboard? Is this what slashdot has come too?
