    The Tudor is actually the Superb(a?)'s coupe version. The Superb looks so much like a Passat, that I literally thought I was looking at a VW until I noticed the Skoda tag.

    The other negative aspect of being 'irreplaceable' is that it's a synonym for 'unavailable for promotion'. If you're the only one who can deal with such and such a system, you're not going to move on to a better, more intersting and better paying position/project -- you're needed with the system!

    I, along with MILLIONS of people world wide, own an iPod (and an iPod Shuffle). They are, for my money, the best portable music players available. They sure aren't the cheapest - but I'm not a consumer for whom the prices is the main selling point.

    That said, my players won't play WMA, which makes Yahoo's years of development a moot point.

    I guess that the millions of 15-35 year olds who paid a premium price for our players aren't Yahoo's target market.

    Having to look at my phone, punch in three numbers, put it back up at my ear, listen, pull it away, punch in three more, etc, when someone who "refuses to text" is dictating me a phone number doesn't make me look like an idiot at all though, right?

    Or when they want me to write down a long email/web/physical address.

    I'd reply that this is MOSTLY true. The ammount of software only avalible for 10.3 (like... oh.... Skype?) is huge compared to the ammount of Windows software that actually requires XP. Upgrading is much more of a requirement on the Mac, at least as far as wanting to run the latest and greatest is concerened.

    From what I understand supplies of 200 and 500 notes are limited to keep them from being used in money laundering (and tax evasion). I don't think I have any euro notes > 50, but then it's probably because I take out 100 euro when I go to the ATM - and most ATMs in euroland will give you change (2 5s, 2 10s, 1 20 and 1 50).

    Aren't you considering denomination? Over here in Poland, we were in a similar situation at the begining of the 90s - the zloty (PLZ) was trading at 35,000 to the US dollar; 20,000 to the deutschmark. We denominated at 10000:1, now the dollar is down to about 3.10 new zloty (PLN), the Euro is at around 4.10PLN. It's nice to be able to use coins again, but I regret not being a millionare anymore (100PLN = 1 million PLZ).

    Very simply put, the cost of ANY software package should be based on the cost it takes to develop/maintain, plus a reasonable profit margin, and then divided by the expected size of the market

    That's an interesting point of view, comrade.

    The thing is that here, in our mostly free market economies, the price of a product is set by WHAT THE MARKET WILL BEAR. On almost every product, in every market segment. Including software.

    Because American Express acts as a clearinghouse for all confirmation (your don't go through a bank, you only go through AmEx), if a merchant gets AmEx confirmation, it's as good as money in his pocket. Visa/MC MAY refuse.

    There are companies that will not accept payment from international clients except through wire transfer or AmEx.

    I have one service that a lot of my non-european friends find amazing: text messages on transaction. Every time there is a transaction made on my account - wether it be a credit card charge, an ingoing/outgoing transfer, deposit, interest payout, etc - I get a text message to my phone immediately. So even if I were to lose my card, I'd be informed the second someone used it - at which time I can call the bank, deny the charge and get it blocked -- even if I didn't know I'd lost it.

    Maybe because there are dozens of major apps and thousands of games avalible for Windows that just don't exist for Linux?

    Well, here in Poland (which is europe, just... a lower class europe) a new DVD will run you $20, with some titles going up to $35, and some (totally budget) titles going as low as $7. All of these costs are in USD.

    Now, factor in that salaries here about 10x lower, and our rampant piracy is a bit easier to understand.

    It depends on how well off you are. A lot of poor people actually do convert their living rooms into bedrooms - if only because they lack free rooms in their homes to do otherwise. While this was (and still is) VERY common all over central and eastern europe, you can see examples of it in western europe and north america as well. This is what fold-out couches and pull down wall-beds are for.

    I think that "The Matrix" was one of those movies that everybody had weeks before it came out. You probably had the screener (work print?) that was missing music in the club scene where Neo goes to meet Trinity for the first time.

    From what I'm seeing right now, the time premium you get by getting a direct FTP hookup vs BT is maybe a few hours. The top BT sites will have most everything online ASAP, it's not really worth it to hang out with warez losers just to get stuff a bit earlier anymore.

    Yeah, it's great that she succeeded and all, but I really hate these "High school drop-out does good" stories.

    I'm one of those stories, and I agree with you fully. For everybody I know who dropped out and made a successful career, there are dozens who can't find a job and still live with their mom at 27. Whenever someone younger asks me about my education, I tell them what happened, then I tell them to stay in school because lightning rarely strikes twice.

    The low-light photography possible with the Canon 20D puts all the films I've seen to shame. I was shooting pictures at my sister's (who's 3) birthday party, everybody elses flashes were going off left and right, I was just smiling and shooting at ISO800 and 1600 - knowing that my pictures would still be more noise-free than theirs.

    As far as press photography, I think the dailys have been shooting digital for 4-5 years now, the weeklys for at least 3 years.

    I've never met a photographer that shoots larger than 6x6cm, and that's the same film you shoot 4x6 on. I know there are some who shoot large format (8x10" negs) but you count those in parts per million.

    All of the pro photographers I know right now will shoot in studio conditions on medium format and do everything else with their DSLR.
