i bought into this theory, and decided to build a new system complete with a big UPS and _never_ shut it off. only reboot, unless installing hardware or somesuch absolutely necessitated shutting it off(i've installed SATA hdd's, new fans, etc without shutting it down). and so far i've actually had quite a few failures, first of all i've actually had to replace every fan at least once including the video card HS fan. i've blown a power supply, a hard drive, i even fried an NIC after about 3 years. although it was old at the time.
whereas my other computer, which is a pentium 3 from about 1999 has had absolutely no parts fail. it gets turned on, and shut off every day. i wish i actually had the cash to build two identical systems so i could really test this, but it seems like it's at least hinting that the "leave it on all the time" theory is crap. and an even better point to make, most parts now(INCLUDING cpu's) are only designed to last 4-5 years. everything will more than likely fail whether you turn it on and off all the time or not, at or around 5 years. much less for fans if they run all the time.
i've had problems with this any number of times, especially recently.
it's totally random when it will show up, i've sent two links to imageshack in a row and had one not work and one work. it's not even always the first one either.
as has been mentioned already, putting "link:" before the link or any other normal text fixes it 100% of the time.
windows 2000 even always ran hotter than any other OS on my laptops, i remember hearing an explanation a long time ago that they ignore the "wait" cycles or somesuch running the cpu harder than intended.
it was nearly entirely on sites like 4chan, ytmnd, fark, and a few others that have been mentioned already.
at least on 4chan, basically everyone who mentioned it was saying they were going to see it opening night. and when i went opening night quite a few people from those sites were there.(i actually went around and asked because i was bored)
i would have to agree that 4chan, in it's heyday(it's at least in a down "season" right now) was the best example of that entire lost touch reality quality of the internet.
sadly, it got to the point where alot of the people who were pretending to be too damn funny actually started thinking they _were_ too damn funny and the entire thing kindof crashed into a wall.
it's still funny and entertaining sometimes, just not as often as it once was.
i saw it at that exact theater, at the 10pm early showing.
and as you said, it was amazing. everyone chanting "SNAKES ON SOME TITTIES" along with the movie and such. this really won't be the same on dvd, and alot of people don't seem to get that.
i've never actually had a card _not work_, but i've had some small problem with every nvidia card i've had. the fan failed awfully fast on my 6600gt, and the ti4200(i think?) that i had before this had ram issues. i also had a geforce2 or something before that which had some small issue.
i've never had a problem with an ati card, but i've only owned 2(rage pro pci and a rage mobility) and heard so much bad news about even trying them on linux that one of those machines just got sold, and the other one is running win2k as a backup machine of sorts.
i would also like to add that the majority of the/b/tards i have talked to weren't actually serious about all the racism, sexism, pedophilia, zoophilia, and whatever else is popular that day. they're just playing along hoping for a laugh.
Its funny that so many people are saying we need new OS's, and avoiding the issue of the lack of broadband speed in the US(and canada, i supposed) compared to EVERYWHERE else besides maybe australia and third world countries.
WHY did they use a pentium 4 in a laptop. thats seriously asking for the heat issues he described. its well known that those are the hottest chips arround.
i surfed arround widowpc's site, and it appears they dont offer any of there really huge laptops like this with pentium m's. just athlon 64 X2's and P4's, only the "lesser models" come with pentium M's which they themselves describe as "faster than the pentium 4!". someone dropped the ball.. hmm
This one guy has a bad experience, posts it online, and bam. story is _everywhere_(5000+ diggs on digg, huge on del.icio.us, boingboinged, slashdotted). this is by no means a unique experience, just read feedback on yahoo or.. anywhere, about any number of stores like this.
if he had written an article about it, and interviewed a number of other effected people then maybe, but this seems like a small operation and a farely isolated experience. its not like amazon, or even one of the popular dedicated camera sites pulled this crap. and as many other people pointed out the site was already terribly rated everywhere BESIDES yahoo.
not saying its his fault, but still. it just comes off alot like that "fuck natalee holloway" story that made the rounds, the guy gets his 15 seconds of fame and everyone starts talking about how there going to DDoS this companies site(aparently, a ton of people from digg just called there phones non stop while other people ENCOURAGED them). pretty lame, in my opinion.
(ouch, that was probably my karma exploding, but who gives a fuck)
whatever gets them to give us affordable service faster than about 5mb/s, i'm all for.
even if it's just as bad as that political campaign crap for once it's positive.
who sees this as the parents just looking for someone to blame other than themselves?
"o no it can't be my fault, i wasn't there when they were talking.. it was myspace!"
i call bullshit on this.

"Is there ANYBODY working in Lite-On's warranty department?"
no, seriously there isn't. i think they farmed it out to some other company that doesn't actually do anything.
the letter wheel is from the gamecube version, and yes it's idiotic.

truth about the card quality :(

this is seriously awesome joke day, i haven't actually laughed at slashdot in months.. and now twice today.
but seriously, it's true :(
doesn't seem to stop most idiots though :(

unless this a joke, did you ever notice how many slashdot posters mention there wives or SO's?
yea, alot. its just a dumb stereotype. stop propogating it
probably been said already, but dell infact uses freedos on all of there dos machines
using 1.0.7 on ubuntu right now, and it did indeed lock up
hmm
what kind of DRM is involved here? can you copy the video/audio to a laptop instead of this overpriced thing? theres no reason you shouldnt be able to
i really wish they had added THAT function
6mb of dedicated upstream, a 4mb file.
in theory, it shouldnt be a problem.... but this is slashdot.
