  1. What a deal! on IPv6 Transition to Cost US $75 Billion? · · Score: 1

I agree, there is a serious problem when knowledge is being restricted for monetary reasons. The journals though, do provide a valuable function. They elevate the level of science via their requirements. The only solution I can think of that will allow journals to continue enhancing the level of science and that would allow free access to online journals is 'illegal' file sharing. Businesses and universities would still need to pay to avoid being sued. But ordinary people would be able to get them for free.

I'm no economist of any sort, but isn't a cheap cost of living one of the major factors that allows poorer countries to provide cheap labour. Shifting the tax burden to consumables will just make it more expensive. Even if the income tax breaks do account for the increased consumption taxes, you create a situation where people outside the country must pay both income at home taxes and a U.S. consumable tax if they wish to purchase U.S. goods.

In a related study, people in the 60 - 100 age group play golf about 1.36 times more often than the average rate. The study also discovered that this age group was far more likely to die than any other agegroup.

It is insane that we are talking about music and profits when there are millions of people right now out there golfing themselves to death.

  7. Downside on Tim O'Reilly on the Google Library Project · · Score: 1

The downside (for O'Reilly) is that having an electronic book service makes every single book easily available for transfer over p2p. And the small relative file size means that you can download all of the O'Reilly books in less time than it takes to download a movie.

  8. Help us game industry!! on Video Game Industry to Sue Michigan's Governor · · Score: 2, Insightful

How thoughtful of the game industry to support the individual's right to raise their own children. Except that it is blatantly obvious that their only reason for doing this is so that they can take advantage of people who don't take an interest in what their kids are doing. The fact that the game industry is against it is fairly strong evidence that the problem exists to be taken advantage of. I'm as against this kind of government regulation as the next guy, but that doesn't make the game industry in any way right.

Story is constricting. One of the key attractions to MMO games is the freedom you have as a citizen of the game world. Personally, playing a story driven rpg drives me crazy. All you're really doing is following the script written by the game designer. For me its much more entertaining being able to chose my own fate.

It comes down to one thing. Downloaders are potential customers, but anyone sharing music is a competitor.

As to what is 'legal' consider for example a library. If the library has a photocopier and I take a book and photocopy it. It is quite obvious that I and not the library has violated the copyright.

The industry will keep going after people sharing and ignore the more criminal act of downloading inorder to reduce the supply and increase the demand. Once the demand is greater than the supply, it would be premium conditions for any of their own 'for profit' music downloading schemes.

The problem with democracy in today's world is that nearly everyone is uninformed. Since anyone's public comments, if they are the least bit contraversial (or even sound slightly contraversial when taken out of context), will no doubt be seen by a large portion of the population.

The result is that most polititions do their best to avoid revealing any information to the public about what they are doing. With polititions doing their best to hide what is really going on, from the public aswell as from opposing parties, how can anyone be expected to make an informed decision?
