    Well, apart from poisoned clients, I am glad noone is screwing up eMule and Bittorrent like they managed to screw up kazaa. Probably because there is a broader culture for file integrity and scene releases on BT/ed2k.

    Too bad I don't have modpoints now. Darwin is open source, yes, but you are not primarily running X11 applications, are you? If you were doing that, why not go for Linux in the first place? The problem as they see it with Mac OS X is that Aqua is proprietary, and a lot of the tools you "need" for several tasks are proprietary too. Most of the open source stuff can be run on Linux/X11 anyway.
    Do not lock them in. Let them be free.

    Instead of using your name, they put their company info in the whois of your domain. Some registrars provide the service for free, while others charge (mine charges 2.99$ per year).

    I was thinking, the original xbox could play pretty much everything when chipped right? But what about the 360, with this triple core non-x86 processor? I do realize that there are open decoders for many formats, but which ones will we loose support for? I can think of Windows Media Video on the top of my head.

    Well, if a company finds out that it will be expensive to support Linux, a Linux driver will still emerge somehow, given that the company is cooperating (by providing specifications) with third party developers who want to create open drivers.
    If they don't provide specifications, then the hardware will be ignored, unless there is a high demand among developers to have support for XXXX hardware. An example of this is the broadcom wireless drivers, which started out as a reverse engineering project.

    ... no wonder it was a failure (I am talking about the first generation n-gage here). As far as I know, you had to turn the thing off to change the games, and the thing must have come with a 170 page manual just to change it. Plus, you looked like you had been a victim of a frisbee accident. Gee, I love to see a house built by the n-gage engineers. It would probably contain a kitchen and a living room seperated by a two door bathroom or something like that. :)

    Why didn't the European Union actually solve the problem, by forcing Microsoft to open up Windows Media Video? I think that would be fair instead of unbundling it like this. It does not solve anything, and people who get XP N, will end up installing WMP anyway.
    Oh, and what about the 'real monopoly' in Windows? It is also known as Internet Explorer, and only God knows why EU did not do anything about that when they were at it.

    You will have a hard time making people give up their subnets, if your plan requires that. Another thing, actually paying for a public ip is what we want to avoid. I would certiantly love to have a huge subnet for free, instead of paying a two digit sum of money each month for one static ipv4 ip.

    With sixxs, you get a /48-subnet, which should be sufficient for your quadrillion machines. The address I have looks something like this: 2001:770:11e::1, which is a short for 2001:0770:011e:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001. Luckily those zeroes can be shorted to just ::, which makes these addresses pretty easy to remember, actually. You can also have a bit fun, if you wish, by having e.g. 2001:770:11e:FFFF:DEAD:BEEF:DEAD:BABE :)

    If you are bored some day, give the tunnel stuff a try, instead of sitting in your underwear drinking cola and multitasking irc and quake4.

    Why is the "most regular people don't care" argument used each and every time? I mean, it is not like every person is interested in doing , but we still do it anyway. By the way, there are a lot of people in third world countries who have food and water, just not any tech.

    If you just want a broker that is quick to get started with, go to btexact and sign up. For those "permanent" set ups, go to (you will get a tunnel initially, but have to save uptime enough to get a subnet and such).

    So, what can it be used for? Well, at the moment I do not really use it to browse the web, but I use it for reverse dns on irc (efnet, freenode and most other ircnets have ipv6 enabled servers). In other words, I can have a range of customized hosts (very handy since many friends have shell accounts here) on irc, like @doomtech.net or cust-523452.nix.net.ru. The first one is my own domain, but the second is from afraid freedns. Afraid has a huge range of public domains, which you can add AAAA and PTR records for.
    After thinking up a host, please go to spamcalc, if you don't have the brains yourself to see if your host is dns spam or not. A host like doomtech.net is not dns spam, but something like i.am.god.and.i.live.in.the.cave.with.osama.bin.lad en.info is.

    Sixxs and btexact have pretty exact instructions on how to set this up on a range of operating systems. With the aiccu client from sixxs, the tunnel should work behind most NAT setups as well.

    It seems like there are a lot of problems making it work just by inserting an old disc, given that the xbox 360 runs on radically different hardware, and that a hardware emulation layer would add even more to the expenses. I would have dropped backwards compat. if I were in this position, so it is at least good to see them try.

    But they give you 150% of the price differente. In other words: 1) Purchase iPod Shuffle for like 1700NOK from Lefdal, 2) Show them a printout from Apple Store Education Norway (this worked for å friend of mine) which shows the shuffle costing somewhere around 1100NOK, 3) Get 900NOK back. Congrats, you have now gotten your iPod shuffle 1GB for 800NOK, which is 300NOK cheaper than from Apple :)

    As usual, there will be a lot of posts about "I just want the damn thing to be able to do calls, nothing more". Aside from killing the market (if every vendor had done so), I just think you haven't really considered the possibilities. I travel one hour per day, and since my SE K750i is so powerful, I watch re-encoded episodes of American Dad and Family Guy to kill some time. The quality is acceptable. I basically see the phone as a cool gadget to kill some time while travelling or attending a very boring class.
