That explains zealots, fanaticism, self righteousness and why policies always fail given enough time. There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. And your new sweater is ugly.
I've been waiting a long time for this. And this, and this, and this.
I'd sure like to see 3d GTK+ widgets and window decoration, all following the same global illumination, complete with specular maps and all the advanced pixel shader techniques available the desktop could become truly beautiful.
"Global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct consequence of the decline in numbers of pirates since the 19th Century."
Just today I saw "50 brand new, free programs making your computer safer!" on a billboard. Maybe people should realise why an old program, yet still actively developed is preferable to a brand new program suffering from child disease, especially when regarding computer security.
YaWah - Blue Marble Next Generation Viewer, featuring a server presenting 10GB of NASA's images per month of the year through Macromedia Flash. Very much like google maps.
"More than 2.5 billion people were affected by floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural disasters between 1994 and 2003, a 60 percent increase over the previous two 10-year periods"
The global population growth from 1974-1983 was 19%, 1984-1993 16% and 1994-2003 13%. Statistics lie. A 60% increase in people affected by natural disasters means less when taking into account the population growth (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:World_populatio n_history.png) and parents' "As populations grow, they are going to move into more and more dangerous areas.".
This could actually work against research in those areas. No one will come up with better prize money, since NASA already tagged it. Instead, there will be X-Prizes in other fields of research.
It's an incredibly smart way of paying for research though. This way NASA won't spend more than $50k on major discoveries.
Well, the icons in windows' systray have popup bubbles showing how many new mails you've got, the status of your firewall etc. As for Linux/Gnome, there's the notification area applet doing the same thing (except it's not bloated with flashing icons for non-critical messages).
NextStep had this feature back in '96 I think (Icon changed when you recieved an email). At least I think so, I first tried AfterStep back then.
Another neat feature is that if you interact with the icon, it can turn into a full window, showing a whole range of information!
Oh, so now you'll have to start "chipping" laptops the same way people rechip X-Boxes an PS2's. I can't wait until I have to subscribe to a service to be able to upgrade my desktop PC.
I bet a certain software and OS vendor are connected to this in some way.
/usr is now the "user space" directory. The/usr/bin contains userspace binaries,/usr/lib userspace libraries and so on, contrary to/bin and/usr which contain kernel space files.
What does free mean when cameras are needed to insure public safety?
What's a leader when it rules by military force and financial stranglehold?
I'm allowed to take a piss in the park if I feel like it, as long as no one sees it or it doesn't happen to be a church wall I'm pissing on. If I have a camera pointed at me at all times that freedom is lost. I can verbally vent my aggression towards certain ethnic groups (if I carried any) or towards homosexuals if my girlfriend turns gay, but only if noone is listening.
If people are monitored, they can be controlled, no?

Except that it doesn't flow in one single direction.

You'd like to check this image out.
The heading you refer to is a gif image. I'm sure your brother can make a gif image look the same on multiple platforms.
"Hey,I'm at work. I don't care. The IT guy will take care of it if it's a virus" is still a common way of dealing with the problem.

...about setting up a linux webcam. I'd brag about getting published on /.

Wouldn't clusters of small satellites actually be larger than conventional satellites, contributing to the growing amount of orbital space debris?
I'd hate to be trapped here!
I think the correct wikipedia link would be .
My point is, that if I was to distribute prize money for research I would rather choose something that doesn't have a prize tag on it.

You live in a sick sick country. And some call it "The Leader of the Free World(TM)".
What a load of BS.
What about outlawing GUNS? After all, their only purpose is injuring or KILLING people.
Seems to me that this senator of yours like killing better than filesharing!
