Article's wrong, there's a few loud asshats here and there still arguing against it but pretty much the entirety of the heirarchy from the chief rabbis down considers organ donation not just permissable but a part of "Pikuach Nefesh".
That falls under the law of "Pikuach Nefesh", which explicitly states that saving a life is more important than every OTHER law except for prohibitions against trading a life for a life, forbidden sexual relations (animals, kids, family, etc), and certain things considered "defaming god's name".
Jews are not only permitted but affirmatively required to do anything in their power save those 3 exceptions to save someone's life.
This is why the current orthodox law states it's not only allowed but encouraged to donate organs and it's just a few loud asshats still disagreeing with that.
"Rampant" piracy? I suppose that's why they've pulled not just record profits pretty much every year but also almost always had a record breaking increase over the previous year's record breaking profits as well.
Their piracy figures, when they aren't just plain made up, are them saying "We expected this much of an increase over last year's profits and we actually got this slightly lower amount so since we didn't overshoot our initial prediction by 500% that 500% must have been lost due to piracy."
If they do this and win, they could start a intellectual and philosophical movement in China......It could provide energy to the anti-censorship movement in China...
Same problem, I got partway through his quote when my brain just locked up the gears and said "Wait a minute, there's no way JACK thompson said this." and went into reverse.
I'm still wondering whats up with his defense of Mass Effect though, he goes after The Sims for child pornography and then says he's got no beef with ME and the whole issue is ridiculous and blown out of proportion. Has to have been an april fools joke or something.
If your stuff is that old then it's usually pointless to compare it to new stuff because they wouldn't even be meaningfully graphable at the same scales.
Even if you know nothing about computers you go look at benchmarks at anandtech and find the one with the biggest bar on the graph that you can reasonably afford.
Probably the only real difference between a touch typist and someone whose "natural" technique gets them the same speed (and accuracy) as a touch typist is physical comfort.
I use at most two fingers of my right hand which is at a very sharp angle coming into the keyboard because it's centered with WESD pretty much directly in front of my straight left wrist. I type just as fast as any touchtypist, the difference is that this is far less painful to my post-break right hand.
The key part of "Repetitive Strain Injury" is "Repetitive". I'm pretty sure spending hours learning to touch type by typing ZCA CZA KLM LPN KPL over and over again from the traditional centered-keyboard home-row position is going to give you carpel tunnel a LOT faster than "normal" typing.
Oh I see now, I don't agree with you lockstep in every way so I'm an idiot. Along with apparently everybody else who posts on slashdot since your posting history seems to be just about entirely composed of you calling people idiots or conservatards.
"Choices". There, you just ended the entire argument.
My "choice" is whether or not I buy DSL. If I lived in a truly open and competitive market my "choice" would be whether to buy DSL or Cable. In the absolute best case scenario I have two companies to choose from.
And it sounds like you think every authority figure automatically deserves absolute respect because they are an authority figure to begin with.
The problem with that kind of circular reasoning is that it doesn't function properly in society. If good teachers deserve respect because they are GOOD teachers then bad teachers do not deserve respect because they are bad teachers and the system functions. Good teachers are rewarded, bad teachers are disciplined or removed from the system. Bad teachers can become good teachers and earn respect, good teachers can become bad teachers and lose respect.
The problem with the current system, which you're apparently a fan of if you think the GP has a problem with authority because he doesn't buy the circular logic driven respect fallacy, is that you have a dysfunctional system where everyone is automatically considered to be inherently right and incapable of being wrong. All teachers are automatically not only good teachers but GODS who cannot ever be incorrect and the mere suggestion that they might not be infallible is "disrespect".
That's how we got into this mess to begin with, assuming that just because someone has authority they must automatically be right and deserve it absolutely.
In my experience it's usually the other way around, GPGnets excuse to fucking up both Supreme Commander games and just dropping them was that they needed the publisher's permission to do anything.
I'm always bitterly amused when people here in the States whine about kids spending too much time inside playing videogames while at the same time making it virtually impossible for them to do anything else.
They're probably repelling people by playing it really loudly and with horrible quality. Classical music has a lot of high notes and when played poorly it's a lot like listening to nails on a chalkboard.
The only thing I found fuzzy about ubuntu, other than the documentation, was the text.
All I want from ubuntu is basic functionality, instead I need to spend more time reinstalling non-blurry fonts and shoveling in package after package than I would just reformatting windows and starting over again.
Came here to say pretty much this. If the argument that videogames induce/increase violence in kids had any merit then as videogames became more and more ubiqitous we would be seeing a RISE in violent crime, not a freefall starting right around the 90's.
Hot wheels on a plastic track to F1.

Look that one up, it'll explain everything.

What parent said.
As annoying as the Citation Police can be, I assure you that Research Zone Jaywalkers are even worse.

Instead of having a Lion battery that explodes we now have a deliberately exploding battery.
Ever tried disagreeing with a teacher? It's apparently the most heinous way to "disrespect" them.

How can math be unrigorous? Either something adds up, or it doesnt, or both.

This story has nothing to do with "Your Rights Online", it isn't news for nerds, and it doesn't matter.
It may be entertaining but it's not remotely slashdot material.

Makes me wonder if we would be as toxic to them as they would be to us...
In my experience it's usually the other way around, GPGnets excuse to fucking up both Supreme Commander games and just dropping them was that they needed the publisher's permission to do anything.
All the DRM is getting closer and closer to completely undermining the rights of first sale and killing off the used game market.
I'm always bitterly amused when people here in the States whine about kids spending too much time inside playing videogames while at the same time making it virtually impossible for them to do anything else.
If they're already lying by orders of magnitude what difference would it make to them?
