As people are starting to post about, this entire article is nothing more then trolling. Livejournal added a new level of service (Sponsored+), people who opt-in to it get many of the features of a paid user, but have ads shown on their journal.
Free users don't see ads except when they go to a sponsored users journal... which if you're just reading people's entries from your own friends page, means never. As a paid user of Livejournal, I never see ads at all.
Whats actually not allowed is a Sponsored+ user doing things to prevent people looking at their journal from seeing the ads. This isn't new, when people started figuring out how to sufficiently mangle HTML on Geocities websites to make the ads disappear, Geocities moved against that... what, seven years ago?
Nobody is getting banned from Livejournal because they have Adblock installed in Firefox.
Took a few tries to get that link to come up, here's the text:
Pete Hines from Bethesda Software was kind enough to answer a few question and shed some light on the whole Horse Armor Spectacle.
Quote: bapenguin: It seems there's been quite a bit of backlash from the $2.50 horse armor skins. What's your take on it?
Pete Hines: Honestly there's not a lot of info out there for us to go on. We tried to find a spot for it that fit with what other things were out there. A Theme costs 150 points. The Kameo thing was 200. We're trying to find the right spot that fits. How much is something you can use in the game worth versus a gamer picture pack, or a theme, and so on.
bapenguin: Any chance that we'll see a change in the price structure because of this? Or has it been selling well enough at the current price point that you guys are happy?
Pete Hines: Will they all be priced the same? I don't know. We're not even a day into this right now. We've got a couple more we're working on finishing and testings and will release in the next couple of weeks. We want to put some different things out there and find out what folks want and what they don't want. These are optional things, not requirements, so if you don't want to get them you don't have to.
bapenguin: What about free mods on the 360? Will we be seeing any of the popular PC mods from the user community showing up on Live?
Pete Hines: Right now we don't have plans to do any free mods. We don't ever get involved with fan-created content, on any platform, so taking some of that and releasing it on Live is not something we'd ever do.
Pete brings up a good point relating to content already out there. I completely forgot about the Kameo "winter pack" thing which was the same price. That "content" is pretty much the same as what Bethesda is offering. It's good to hear that a variety of stuff is in the works.
Well thats kind of the point, I'd be surprised if someone didn't make a very similar mod to what they're selling.
I bet they could do some really interesting things that would be worth paying for, but if something this simple costs $2.50 (or $2 for the PC version from that site), then the price for something like a new plotline or a new region would be downright scary.
Must feel nice for 360 owners to pay more for the game, then get the privilege of paying for stuff that PC gamers can simply download (or make) for free.
Seriously, $2.50 for horse armor? At that rate, I can only imagine what actual content would cost.
The difference is that the +/- situation was still using most of the same hardware, the formats aren't all that different.
HDDVD and Blu Ray require more different hardware (most obviously being the lasers), making supporting both more expensive. I'd much rather they settle it and I only have to pay for support for the format that ends up mattering in the end.
Well thats the thing, its not like FF10 where I can point to something in particular that I hate. FF12 was just completely underwhelming, I found myself sitting there going "... thats it?" and being bored. If the goal of the demo is to make the game seem interesting, it failed spectacularily on me.
Maybe the demo that comes with Dragon Quest is just badly designed and the actual game is better
I'm playing Dragon Quest 8 right now (fun game), and it came with a demo of FF12.
"Yech" is about the only word I can come up with for it. If that demo is an accurate representation of the final game, I want to know just how big a bribe it took to get the rating these reviewers gave it.
$9 million doesn't translate into instnatly fixing server problems. Rolling out enough new hardware to handle everybody is something that takes a bit of time, since in the real world we don't have an army of Gnomes to handle it.:)
12 comments, and most of them are already saying "its different because the US is so big!"
Bullshit. Look at #2 on the actual report, sitting beside South Korea: Canada. Canada being both geographically larger and far less densely populated then the US, the size argument is blown up right there.
Its good to know that if Hillbillies steal my memory card and nail it to a tree to worship as a god, I will still be able to get back my precious pictures of last years Christmas party!
I for one was never at war with them, they create awesome games.
People need to stop thinking of Slashdot as one big collective with the same thoughts and goals. Its a website full of unique people, they think differently.
Some of them are upset over bnetd, others couldn't care less.
My domain's email does basically the same thing. I have neither the money or the processor power to virus scan everything, so I just set it up to not allow attachments that are executable in Windows.
The problem is that if somebody sends an executable file, they need to know its not going to be delivered. So it bounces.
That creates the problem the article poster is complianing about, but I'm not really sure which is worse. The last thing I want is somebody thinking an email got delivered when it actually didn't.
I've looked for it on Kazaa, but all I ended up getting was The Second Renaissance which was renamed.

I've played Simcity 4 on the PC, and was horribly disappointed. I mean horribly, I haven't found anything this disappointing since Diablo 2.
The region system they came up with doesn't work anywhere near as well in practice as in theory. The game constantly wants to "reconcile" the edges of the screen to match other regions, even when it doesn't need to be done. This regularily destroys anything near the edge of the screen.
Want to put a power plant in a neighboring city and buy power from it? If you figure out how to actually do that, let me know.
Want to spend time building neat stuff? First you need to individually adjust the funding for every school, hospital, and police station in your city. Not doing this makes it much harder to get anywhere at the beginning, and its just a pain in the ass.
Changing cities is slower then hell.
And so on, so forth. Looking at one message board, there is a person who discovered that the transportation model is based on people driving at 6mph. Thats just lovely.
It looks beautiful, but the game just ends up being more like work and not any fun.

I was wondering why McAfee popped up when I went to that page.
...
WorldOfWarcraft.com is linking to the NYT article. Is that trustworthy enough for you?
Draenei races are Paladins, Warrior, Priest, Mage, Hunter. Both sides already have Warlocks, maybe you're thinking Shaman?
Not to mention of course that Shaman are inherently better for PvP then Paladins are.

No, not really. Well thanks for correcting me. :)

Now for $0.50? That'd be different.

Well of course, because the entire quality of a game is measured by how expensive a video card it takes to play it.
You could do that with OperaShow in 2001. Its supposed to be impressive 3 years later?

The US is just a lousy place to get broadband.

Take that piece of crap Norton and toss it out the window.
Turn on the XP Firewall. Leave it on. Grab the updates.

The best part of the Ultimate Edition of T2 is the DTS-ES soundtrack. It kicks much ass compaired to the Dolby one.
Why the hell did they remove it? Bastards.
