Most CEOs (I hesitate to say "all CEOs" but it's damn near close) come from a sales background.

Either leaders within their own company or leaders at a rival, they tend to have significant sales experience.

It tends to create a very strong perspective for a CEO as he's used to "if our products don't sell, I don't eat". Which remains true at his level. Well, sort of. It used to, before the age of the golden parachute and other tricky contract clauses.

Possession with intent to distribute is a much stiffer penalty than possession, and the burden of proof isn't that much. Two bags of pot in your pocket (say you have low grade and high grade and want to keep them separate for the same reason you don't pour all your wine into a big jug) and you can get slapped with possession w/intent.

I'm certainly not condoning child porn or whatever, just stating that "thought crime" has been alive and well in our society for some time now.

    • Microsoft Windows is not for me
    • Surfing without X third party software programs running in the background is not for me
    • I liek teh Lunix!

Just like car crashes went up dramatically when more automobiles ended up on the road, or cell phones caused dropped calls to increase dramatically, the utility offered by the Internet will be greater than most users' abhorrence of problem solving.
Most users will figure out HOW to secure them. Just like most users figured out how to use a file system and install programs.
Additionally, the users who are having trouble tolerating such garbage are becoming fewer as time moves forward. Kids aged 14-17 are going to figure out how to work the stuff simply to see boobies.

One of the points of TFA (related to TCO) is that the support costs of proprietary systems are deeply discounted for public schools.
Keeping ANY system running and in decent order requires expertise and time. Time may be less in a linux environment (though in a public school with very restrictive internet access, who knows) but the time component still exists.
With the deep discounts given to public schools by vendors such as microsoft, and the general economics of support (a glut of Microsoft Certified support guys, whereas Linux support is rare and therefore much more costly) the TCO for a school system is a different beast.
I'm definitely pleased with the article and it's a very innovative approach, but saying that the TCO is always always lower under any circumstances is a bit fallacious.

Top Secret clearance authorizes the government to tap your phones at any time, subjects you (and potentially anyone you come in contact with) to surveillance at any time, and many of the rights the 4th amendment grants/outlines are waived.
