  1. Re:Stanford 0wn3d Carnegie on Inside DARPA's Robot Race · · Score: 1

Yes, since one race really says a lot about which one is better. Let's look at the situation a few years from now and then make judgements. After all, CMU beat everyone the previous year. Plus, Stanford's team was basically a CMU team if you look at the composition of the team. Plus, using "0wn3d" at all was so 1997.

Who cares though. Look at the improvement from two years ago to this past race. Now we have (forgive me if I forget the details) 5-6 vehicles that finished the race? That says great things about the development of robotics in general.

I see where you're coming from, but I don't see that happening any time soon. I believe it was one of Job's keynotes in the summer- check it out; they have a woman from Microsoft come up and talk during it, saying all of the exciting things that OS X can provide for Microsoft and how they're excited to be doing what they're doing. It could be theoretical BS and they still could feasibly say "screw you, Apple" and leave, but based on that speech I don't see it happening.

I do welcome an Apple suite though; I have iWork and am really starting to love it, but I'm really missing out on a spreadsheet app. Possibly going to go purchase Office on Monday simply due to that fact just to install Excel.

When these things start appearing in stores, why bother going into one to buy one when you can get it a lot cheaper online? I haven't bought from the company myself yet, but I've seen it linked to on a lot of blogs lately. Something about supplying cheap cameras, so maybe some of you want to give them a shot; you might save some money that way.

  5. Re:Trillian, Trilllian, Trillian on What Makes a Good IM Client? · · Score: 1

I used Trillian for three years. Then I got my Mac and within three hours of using Adium I knew I'd never go back to Trillian. I'm a large fan of Trillian in the Windows world (paid for the Pro account even), but if you're comparing between IM clients I prefer Adium. It might be a bit of comparing Apples to (XP)oranges since they're two different platforms, but I think Adium tops out overall.

In regard to logging- I have three years of Trillian logs, so I know and have used it profusely. I prefer Adium. It's a lot easier to search within logfiles, and it manages them a lot better. Granted, it's a matter of taste, of course. But let me tell you, the way Trillian logs is really not fun, since they don't have one standard log format. Over my three years of logging I ended up with like three different formats- first the barebones, then with a timestamp on it, then it changes the actual name of who I was conversing with once I switched to Pro and changed contact names (from HOTSEXYCHICA6969 to Jane Doe, for example). The result? It was a bitch to convert my three years of logs to Adium's (more strictly standarized, from what I've seen so far) format. I might not stay on Adium forever, and the fact that they keep their timestamps standard and always log the user's screen name (not your personalized name for them) will make it easier for me to switch in the future to another software package (or platform) if I see fit.

By the way- I coded some quick conversion code in Java in a few hours when I made the switch from Trillian to Adium. I'm not an amazing coder, but it transferred my variablely-formatted logfiles well enough. If you're also making the switch from Trillian to Adium, the code might be useful to you (depending on how you logged your conversations earlier). I plan on throwing it on my blog on Good-Tutorials.com in the next few days for anyone to grab, so you can check that out if you wish. You can also email me at goodness@ that site I mentioned and I can perhaps send it to you soonishlyer. Granted, it's probably not a hugely popular thing, but if it helps a few, what the heck. :)

  6. Statement From an Artist on Bad Day To Be Sony · · Score: 1

This was on the website of The Bad Plus, a group which recently released a Sony album:

    (from thebadplus.com)
    -------
    COPYRIGHT-PROTECTION ACTIVITY?
The American edition of our recent release, "Suspicious Activity?", was copy-
protected by Sony/BMG without our prior knowledge. Unfortunately, we are now
further informed that Windows PC users must be advised that any attempts to
remove the anti-piracy software could result in your having to reinstall the operating
system. Mac users are not affected. The European edition of the disc does not
    feature this copy-protection software.

While we would love for you to hear "Suspicious Activity?", we are compelled
to recommend that until a safe protocol is posted on this site that you
think twice before loading the American version of the CD onto your PC--and
we profoundly regret any difficulties that Sony/BMG's copy protection has
    created for any Windows users.
    ------

Note that Sony didn't even tell them what they were doing. I'm sure this is something most artists have experienced, too- now they're stuck suggesting to their OWN FANS not to buy their album. Crazy.

No "sane webmaster should willfully inject foreign JavaScript on his website"? I'm guessing you've never ran ads on your website before. That's the norm. Nearly every ad network has their code in JavaScript. Heck, chances are if someone is using Google Analytics they're ALREADY using Google AdSense on their site- who's to say that Google hasn't done the same with AdSense? People haven't said anything about the evils of AdSense yet really.

My point is that it is about trust, as a previous poster said. A heck of a lot of companies do business in the exact same way. If you don't trust Google with your site, then don't use it (and get a license of Urchin for yourself- that is extremely solid software; I'd say the best in the business).

An excellent point. Another thing to take into consideration is that a lot of people are really hesitant to jump into something new. I just updated a small business a few weeks back where a lot of the secretaries moved from 98 to XP and we had a heck of a time trying to explain to those people why we did it. They see new things on something they've grown accustomed to and many just can't adapt well. The techy crowd can easily adapt to these things, but when you get to the level of staff people who aren't techies and simply use what works for them in the office space it starts to become a daunting task to try and move these people to an entirely new program, much less OS.

It wouldn't suprise me if there were only 25 people in the world who have ever boughten anything from spam. Those 25 alone make it profitable for the spammers.
