A simple stability program running on a massively overpowered linux system could be proven to guarantee scheduling at a low update rate. It's just not an efficient real-time system.

In the bitcoin equivalent of losing loose change in your couch, one of my old hard drives has 4 mined bitcoins on it somewhere. They are rapildly approaching a value high enough for me to stop being lazy and ressurect the machine.

this would assume it could run on natural gas, but it needs pure methane. Even so, it ends up cheaper than grid electricity.
That only works if your body's natural clock is fairly close to 24h and your rhythm can sync in with the clock. I think average is around 24.5h. I'm in around the 25h mark. I can sync with 24h for a few days, but if I leave it natural I'll add an hour every day (vacation or on flex time).
The good news is that if the laser fails, the data should still be available to read and copy onto a new hard drive. If the laser was needed for reading as well, I'd be wary of the reliability.
I've used a GQ-4X Willem Programmer with good success. The trick is to get a good set of adapters, so you have the flexibility to cover many packages. PSOP, TSOP, etc. I've even found one that lets me do a serial SOIP8 EEPROM while it is still on the board-- very handy to not need the remove&resolder.

But since this trickles down the wholesale market to smaller ISPs, then to the end user, and there's profit to be had, and its supply driven, then the poor end user gets nailed with huge costs for a few addresses.

I would say the best path would be to port a Palm emulator onto the phone to have instant access to a large software base. Most decent apps don't need much processing power or memory to run. Then in time start rewriting the best apps to run natively.
