Why the hell aren't you watching your kids? What the hell ever happened to active parenting? If you don't want your kids to see such content then keep them off the damn internet,or at least monitor what they do online.....Furthermore, filtering may do more harm than good by keeping useful information blocked anyway............The ?internet industry? is composed of a hell of a lot of people, and there is no one person to lay such responsibility on anyway.....The internet is not a cable tv show or a movie ? it wasn't designed with a ratings system in mind.........
This is a disturbing trend i've seen lately - in everything from books, magazines, TV shows, to the Internet. Some people seems to be convinced it's better to ban everything questionable / politically incorrect instead of acknowgleding responsability as a parent and keeping your kids from seeing stuff you don't want them exposed to.
Ultimately, these actions have little effect because of the nature of Internet itself; there's always a way of bypassing restrictions, even at firewall level. Never mind the grown up, conscious adults that have the legal right to fed themselves of all the porn they want. No one thinks of them either;)
All Athlon XPs support SSE; thing is it has to be enabled by the BIOS, which quite a lot of motherboard manufacturers didn't do (i suffered it with my ECS K7S5A). Try a BIOS update, it might help.
IBM also had a very decent speech recognition software for Windows 3.1 - i can't recall it's name, but on a 486 it managed to recognize speech with surprising accuracy. It needed a lot of training and time to process that data though.
I think it was the same software that was ported to OS/2 (WebSphere?).
http://www.diyaudio.com/ it's an excellent site. I've been building audio gear for a while now and i found that resource invaluable, with contributors as Nelson Pass (from Pass Audio, http://www.passlabs.com/ and http://www.passdiy.com/), Rod Elliot from The Audio Pages, a lot of contributors of Headwize, and quite a few more very knowledgable and technical people.
Highly reccomended, and glad to see someone mentioned it.
Both the psycis and the graphics of HL2 are already "we-have-seen-this-before". Doom 3 and FarCry have excellent graphics, in the same league of HL2, if not better. Games like Painkiller make excellent use of the Havok physics engine.
But that's not the point. The original HL wasn't either revolutionary in graphics or implementation (the sound though was quite good at the time), but the game itself. The story, the settings, the atmosphere. I'm EAGER to play HL2, and the reason it's not the graphics but the memory of the original HL.
Having said that, there's a few things on the Source engine that are quite impressive. The graphics, never mind being not original anymore, are excellent, same with the phyisics. Some game clips with characters talking, complete with facial animations, put to shame many actual games.
Same question here. The weirdest thing i've seen plugged on DIMMs was a couple of DDRRAM sticks that had LEDs indicating the action (which chip was being adressed); they blinked quite nicely and added to the "Oooh!" factor of a custom case.
What's that though, i've no idea. Seems it's getting power from the PSU, perhaps it's some bizarre way of altering the bus speed, or getting extra juice for stabilty. The board has been hacked in a couple of places aswell.
The only "live" performances i own are some Unplugged concerts (namely: Clapton, Nirvana and Alice In Chains) - it's a good chance to listen how a song is converted from one style to another.
As for pure live recordings, either bootleged or offical ones, i agree. 90% are not worth the trouble.
Mod up. I don't know why must GMail be "browser compatible", but i can't fire it from Opera. Hence, i check my GMail account maybe twice a month, when i'm in the mood of running Mozilla.
Oh, c'mon, he's got a point. I like GMail a lot, but Hotmail it's "good enough" for 99% of users, even more if they boost the mailboxes to 250MB. There's a gazillon users of Hotmail thanks to the tie-in with MSN Messenger. And besides the "cool factor", what's the point of changing mails if Hotmail gives you a comparable mailbox size? (I know, but realistically, it's DAMN hard to fill 250MB of mail, never mind 1GB).
My quirks with Hotmail are others; namely, how it has become downhill since purchased by Microsoft (just compare the old interface) and it being a spam magnet like no other.
I agree with you though, as it is, we're still dependant on fossil fuels and combustion engines. I think stuff like BioDiesel will be vastly more common in the near future than H-Cells.
Same here. I don't know if the game is faster, FPS-wise, but it does feel much much much more smooth and responsive. Same with Quake 2, and same with the original Unreal. UT2004 runs just the same over Windows and Linux (through levels on Linux load quite faster) - maybe this is because the game is already pushing the limits of y system.
Anyway, on my XP1800+ with 512mb and GfFX5200 Doom 3 runs nicely at 640x480, but things do get choppy when there's a lot of action going on. I would love to see a perfomance boost from the Linux client, never mind avoiding reboots.
I would kill for a Minidisc MP3 player. Minidiscs are cheap, sturdy, almost never skip and have battery life in excess of 10hs. Plus, the media itself, through not "mainstream", it's cheap and available.
I use my old Minidisc all the time, but i have to re-encode to ATRAC in real time instead of being able to upload a file; newer ones support recording over 1X via USB, but the stream is raw audio and the player itself does the conversion. Otherwise, i'm very happy with it.
PS: Having minidiscs replacing floppies would've been a Godsend. Too bad Sony never gave it a chance to happen.
C'mon, i love Google as much as anyone else, but is it really necesary? I mean, with the Google Toolbar already available for download and stuff. Integrated GMail would be nice too, but there's already a lot of perfectly useable browsers. Hell, i even like Opera's Google search better than any toolbar.
I don't know, i get a little jumpy when i see companies (that i like, if that's possible) diversifying too much instead of focusing on what they do best. Usually it's a sign of bad things coming.
Ditto. The game it's completely playable on my 5200FX, 640x480 medium resolution. Given, that might be "low" resolution for most of you, but the game still looks better than most other games on higher resolutions.
One thing to notice it's that on current generation hardware, Doom3 is as CPU-bound as it's GPU-bound; going from an AthlonXP 2000 to a 2600 made a noticeable difference for me.
As long as you don't fiddle much with Win89, it's fairly stable, still needing reboots every now and then. If you run "heavier" applications (office suits, f.ex, and specially games) expect Win98 to crash and burn regularly - my experience is that it's VERY sensitive to programs that use a lot of memory.
Anyway, the thing is that if the system you need crashes every few months, a Linux, Win2000 or WinXP would stay running for ever. But if Win98 fits you needs, by all means, don't listen to anybody and enjoy it:).
My XP installation bluescreens every time i try to use a webcam that has problems with my onboard USB adapter. On linux, the only thing that dies is the process using it.
XP bluescreens whenever a kernel-space driver dies. It happens often enough; through it's nowhere as bad as 98.
Anyway, the problem is the flawed Windows design. In linux, access to USB ports (and the rest of the hardware) can be restricted per user, so the issue is nonexistant.
Seen it with Counter Strike players as well. They play the game 640x480 (on insanely powerful hardware), with gamma and digital vibrance all the way up, huge FOVs, and turning off absolutely everything they can; i've even seen a few that turned off the map textures.
Lunacy. But still, as long as the client has to render the scene, there always be "cheats" like those to be used.

The feeling will be reinforced once the PSP crashes and burns, just like the 3DO did. $350 is just too pricey.

I just hope it comes out in time.
Duke Nukem Forever, anyone?

Heh, MMORPG players are funny indeed.

"I like the part where Mark Hamill discusses the theoretical logistics of employing janitorial staff for the entire Death Star. Enjoy."
Well, similar discussions have been had before (http://imdb.com/title/tt0109445/). Please, will someone think of the contract workers?!??!!
Thing is, there isn't such a thing as a 100% efficient internal combusiton engine (not even close to that, in fact - check http://ffden-2.phys.uaf.edu/212_fall2003.web.dir/B en_Townsend/Heat_Engine.htm).

All in all, thank you iD. You guys rock.

I beleive the word you're looking for is touché.

What's next?! Game publisher houses deciding what we can and cannot have installed? Games that dele... oh wait, it's The Sims.
Sorry, my bad.

It was "The recruit" indeed.

He's not trolling (not much atleast :) ). I'm also waiting for the promised linux binaries, i hate dual booting.
