Signed 8-bit ints max at 255. Unsigned are higher.
Isn't one of those bits used for the sign, thus you end up with seven bits for the number?
That would leave the max value at 127.
Seriously, 2^8 = 256. How do you get larger numbers out of an unsigned int?
City of Heroes and City of Villains have a system where either the higher level character can temporarily be a lower level or the lower level character can temporarily play as a higher level when teaming. It makes the game fun and playable for both the hardcore and the lite players in our guild.
If the other countries had the same laws, then this would have never been a problem in the first place and we the consumer's would be able to play whatever music we want on whatever devices we want (assuming licensing fees are reasonable).
One thing you didn't mention about WoW that makes DDO sound much better: The Grind. There is no way I am going to grind my life away playing WoW when instead, I can play DDO and have fun.
I only played WoW to level 11, but it did seem to be turning into a massive grind of collect 20 horns of unicorn, 7 hides of tiger, etc. DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online) on the other hand has none of the grinding. Just Dungeon after Dungeon (some indoors, some outdoors) to complete in a tactical manner using the teammates and resources available.
if the door can detect the knock transmitted by the device, what prevents a stick-on device from recording it and passing on the info - much like a key logger. Or even one of those laser microphones that detects the vibrations of an object, even at great ranges.
I just wonder if Heinein wasn't right about marriage contracts and open relationships. Just give it another 200-300 years and it may happen. He's predicted many other inventions that have come to pass.
Your comment is funny, because after thinking about what I would do, it appears that Vista is already including it. I would have a sandboxed environment for IE, limited user accounts that work with 3rd party apps, and a 2-way firewall.
I suppose the benefit of AV is that it can use a database of other peoples experience with downloaded apps or scripts to decide whether you can/should run it or not. That is not something that an OS can decide on without the data from other cases for support.
I also device ways in it so you do not need so much disk space to go back in time for very prolonged periods (deltas which to the user look like full backups). Rsnapshot does much the same thing in linux. It uses rsync to optimize transfer of data across the network and and hard links to allow multiple backups to share the same files. You can easily have snapshots that are months old alongside snapshots from every day of the week.
You are so right. I bought the game on launch day and only lasted 2 months. It got to the point that they where nerfing you to uselessness and the entire game was just a massive grind. I have no great urge to grind my life away and pay for the privelege.
I agree that the OS should be secure enough that an AV isn't necessary. MS bothering to write a separate AV software that they will then charge an additional fee sounds like a conflict of interest as far as making the OS as solid as possible is concerned.
I don't recall a high percentage of other solar systems having one or more planets as a basic tenet of astronomy. Do you have any links to back that up?

That would be nice but I always seem to get old win98 computers with devices that require impossible to find drivers and no serial number for the os on the side of the computer.:(
I kind of agree with you. I may end up spending the extra $50 if I had no other options. But after a bit of thought, I realized that being able to download games is just sustaining my addiction and probably causing me to buy more games. Lately I have really been cutting back on all my games and just playing Starcraft (which I have bought 3 times now) occasionally.
Yeah, I should just do without even though I am hurting NOBODY. Your morals don't concern me. I do buy a number of games, probably $400/yr. Sorry to hurt your feelings by not spending even more.
I have been reading a book on how to maintain and restore old houses and sometimes insulation can cause more harm than good. Houses need to be able to breath to prevent moisture buildup and subsequent rotting of wood. Insulation can trap water against your frame and cause more damage and expense to repair than a higher heating bill would cost. Anyway, I am certainly no expert on this subject, I am just stating that sometimes the effects of environment on a house are more complicated than you may realize.
Right now i do a mix of buying games and pirating them. If games cost less, I would buy all that I use. Alternatively, if they had less stringent copy protection, I could give games to family members so two of us could enjoy a game and I wouldn't feel quite so ripped off.
PS. not all of us make $50,000/yr or even $30,000/yr. Working for a non-profit does not pay very well.
She may have been thinking of an old movie from 1957 -- Desk Set! Where a computer completely replaces a research department and answers similar questions.
I thought 8 bit integers max out at 255? I suppose a 16 bit integer would suffice with its 65536 discrete values.

I get to avoid the issue entirely now that they offer bottled waters as a free substitute.

Hahaa, I like that. They can sell an Anti-Virus Anti-Virus for the small yearly fee of $50.00

It's all about the gameplay.

This exposure will definitely pay off when invading aliens from other planets die off from the common cold.
