I recently acquired a PowerStation made by FixStar, the same people who make Yellow Dog Linux. Since Apple and IBM gave up on Power-based workstations, this is among the last you can get, and it's quite nifty, and fairly reasonably priced ($1250 for quad PPC, 2GB RAM). If you have $6000 extra to throw at it there's also a Cell expansion board. My only real issue with it is lack of compatible 3d graphics hardware.

If x86 dies, which it is in the process of doing, Microsoft will port Windows to run on SPARC, ARM, PPC, whatever comes next. Microsoft has gotten where it is by being good at business, and being good at business does not consist of pushing a dying platform that it has no vested interested in. Windows has been ported to other architectures before, and is inherently portable.

Actually, Iran's military, whether or not they're equipped with printers is one of the most modern in the region. Although their F-14 fighters are in storage to increase their lifetimes, they've reverse-engineered and heavily upgraded their F-5's to a fairly high standard. In addition, they've purchased high-end Russian fighters recently. A war between Iran and the US would be extremely costly for both sides, especially given Iran's propensity for using child soldiers.

Bush is bad, but is NOTHING next to his predecessor. Let's review Clinton's stunning achievements for a moment:

-Attempted transition from humanitarian aid to nation-building in Somalia, resulting in the deaths of 19 US Soldiers on 3 Oct 93 because the Clinton administration didn't think they needed armor or heavy equipment.
-Murder of 86 American citizens at Waco, and two more at Ruby Ridge.
    -The fiasco that was HillaryCare.
-Massive expansion of the ECHELON data-mining system.
-The totally unconstitutional Assault Weapons Ban.
-Claimed authority to conduct warrantless searches and wiretaps.
-Communications Decency Act - massive attempt to censor the Internet.

More to the point, despite his desperate attempts to make it appear so, Sen. Obama is not running against George Bush, and nor are the many, many Democrats running nation-wide that insist on equating their opponents to the President. Seems half the words that come out of Sen Biden's or Sen Obama's mouth these days are "failed Bush policies," and it's getting real annoying...

When you insert code into something like the Linux kernel, you agree that from that moment on, it is licensed under GPL version 2. That does not mean you have the luxury of deciding who uses it, despite your little political foibles on that topic. "Free software" means exactly that - if the United States Armed Forces opt to use the software, then they have every right to use it. It is no longer in your control.

On another note, why should you object to having the military using code you've written? You're failing to understand that the men in uniform are under a binding contract, and that they are sacrificing every day to defend their nation. The US Military does not create policy, civilian politicians do - the military is just a tool of policy. They need all the tools at their disposal to do their job of keeping the United States safe, however that job is defined by the politicians.
