  1. Smartphones?? on Linus Pooh-Pooh's Real-Time Patch · · Score: 1
"Linux is already making progress in smartphones."

From Series 60 Developer Platform 1.0/2.0: Basics paper:

Symbian C++ APIs enable extremely efficient multitasking and memory management. Memory-intensive operations such as context switching are minimized. Symbian OS is primarily event-driven rather than multithreaded. Multithreading is possible but is avoided because it potentially creates several kilobytes of overhead per thread. Conversely, a primarily event-driven approach doesn t need any context switching and can have an overhead as low as a few tens of bytes. Special attention has been given to designing the Symbian OS to be robust and reliable. Among the user requirements that were kept in mind when the Symbian OS was developed were that user data should never be lost and that the device should never have to be rebooted (there isn t a boot sequence when the device is turned on). This has been achieved by:

Effective memory management that prevents memory leaks Releasing resources as soon as they are no longer needed

Effective error-handling framework that handles out-of-memory errors properly

    Secure data storage

    Careful and device-specific power management

I know that there allready exists Linux smartphones, but how do they perform in "real life"?

As far as I know, it's not even possible to develop Symbian mobile apps on linux (lack of emulators), which is a drag, so come on, give us Linux smartphones, or Mr Symbian, release some emulators for Linux (a lá suns java-WTK) or else.....

Whatever he puts in the "[any-os] and Windows will be the only OSs.." the "Linux" choice is the smartest, it will push (further) Schwartz and McNealy to launch their attack on RedHat . My guess is that he had those brainwashed to belive that LINUX is the threat to them, and if they would get back to former greatness, they could still get the high-end server market - "and between us [he put his arms around them, tilts his head and smiles], we don't plan to pursue the server market, we belive the desktop is our thing, you know, china and the expanding market" As they embraced the idea, he padded them on their backs and forwarded a bunch of cash as a part of a "bigger deal" and laught to himself.

I could play a "childish" game where I ask you "how do you know that an apple is attracted to the earth?", you would tell me the laws of gravity, and I would ask "how do you know that the gravity propogate through the three dimensions?", you would tell me that Newton proved it with is mathematical findings of the force is the inverse of the distance in square, that this is in line with the sphere's area relative to the distance of the center (this is ofcourse not a proof in it self, it's just very likely that it's related). I would ask you how this was proved, and we would go on to findings of the "old greeks", and finally I would question the fact that 1+1 is alway 2. And you would tell me that this is silly, I would argue that sometimes it's not, sometimes 1+1 is 3. It just happens once every gazillionth year. And we would be back to square 1.
