The native capacity of Jag Gen2 drives is 500GB. Using hardware based compression at the drive (depending on the data), you could see up to 3:1 compression, or 1.5TB per tape.

The native capacity of LTO3 tape drives is 400GB. I think they estimate 2:1 compression, or 800GB per tape.

(Understand that these are enterprise class drives, and it wouldn't be cost effective to use them for just one workstation.)

The bigger question is whether all 750GB of your data needs to be backed up. If 10% of it represents original hard work on your part, then backup that data at minimum.

Now I can do without the composite to RF adapter I needed because DVDs have macrovision. (The VCR would've preformed the task, except for macrovision.)

My Sima volume stabilizer is now redundant as well.

I replaced the old RCA with a new Standard Definition 29 inch RCA set which includes an ATSC tuner. (The set includes component input as well.) If I can get 15 years serivce out of the new one, the 269$ purchase price will work out to less than 20$ per year.

Even if the set vaporizes after 5 years, its still cheaper than the interest payments on a bigscreen.

Yes, I could've afforded a HD LCD, but all my favorite content is on DVD boxed sets, and the source material wasn't even HD in the first place.

ATSC is based on an MPEG-2 stream and an AC-3 stream. Even downconverted from HD to SD, the picture looks excellent. If you haven't seen what it looks like, you may be suprised at how good it looks compared to analog broadcast.

I didn't mind v.32bis internet access at home, once I put up an accelerated web caching proxy.

The motivation to go to broadband access was the fact that it is always on. If you walk across the room and hit the spacebar to power up the system, by the time you sit down and get comfortable, the browser is ready for use. No waiting to hit the dialup pool, no CHAP sequence to worry about, etc.

I'm on my second round of DSL. Verizon bought GTE in my locale, and Verizon is using different gear than GTE did. 3Mbit down is fast enough I almost wonder if the move to FIOS is going to be all that noticeable. I think its funny that many people who claim to not see the value in a 30$ pre month broadband account are the same people who are paying 80$ per month for cable.

After 15 years with NTSC over the air, I just made the transition to ATSC over the air. With no cable bill to deal with, FIOS seems pretty affordable to me. I'd rather download my favorite shows anyway. Hopefully some internet-only production houses will spring up. I'd love to see a net-only version of Firely-2. Not likely to happen though.
