The hardest part is sorting out the ones and the zeros without generating more ones and zeros than you started with. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University believe they are on the cusp of a major breakthrough in the E-Waste initiative.
Every time there is an article about demand for some toy, someone suggests that it should be auctioned off. The usual response is that auctioning makes the company look greedy and doesn't produce as much media hype as 200 people camping out in the cold to shell out their money.
What would happen if the company auctioned off the first 10 000 units and then donated the excess to a local charity? I think that would get rid of a lot of the middlemen and produce a lot of POSITIVE publicity. Also the buyers who actually wanted the items would not have to feel guilty about funding some sketchy re-selling ring. The company could then use the auction prices as "proof" of how awesome their product is and reassure the rest of the consumers that the next shipment will be sold at a lower price.
They won't be able to get the same amount of media attention. If there are fans lining up weeks ahead of time and all the stores sell out within an hour, it gets lots of media attention. If they sell out quietly, then people don't even get to see it in the stores. Remember that most people aren't actively paying attention to game console news. Instead, they will see advertisements in stores or hear about the massive sellout in the nightly news.
After hearing about Foxit reader from various sources, I decided to try it out. It's amazingly fast compared to adobe's reader, but I'm sort of disappointed at not being able to open pdfs within the browser. I tried looking, but is there any browser integration for Foxit?
Ok, first off: "pro-piracy blowhards"; what does that mean?
Pro-piracy blowhard: One who is so greatly disturbed by the phrase "pro-piracy blowhards" that they cannot read to the end of the post before composing a 407 word rant about the inadequacies of modern copyright law in serving its purpose intended by the constitution.
1. Cartel keeps pressure on the market to artificially keep diamond prices high. 2. Synthetic diamond industry is propped up by the artificial demand paid for by the Cartel. 3. Diamond manufacturing processes thrive on the money being poured into the market. 4. Techies profit as diamond based chips replace silicon.
Then you should have bought a smaller car and then not used that.
(Rebuttal: I use my 4x4 for camping trips every year!) Maybe it would be cheaper to rent your 4x4 for your family camping week than to buy a car that will sit in the parking lot most of the time.
I grew up with the owner's son of surfline.com and he handles the email from people; he said he has gotten a few notices about it not working in FF and it is not enough to bother him.
You're a responsible slashdotter, you know what to do. Just post a link to the site and an the site's contact address to slashdot. That's how we get things done around here.
The sooner diamonds become nearly-worthless, the sooner we can start making cell-phone microchips and eye-gougers out of them.
Hopefully, the market stays up long enough to fund the diamond manufacturing research. That way it'll be the jewelers funding the next tech revolution instead of the techies.
That being said, it looks like it converts heat to mechanical movement with "near-ideal efficiency". I guess the usualy mechanical-> electric + loss due to transmission apply. Anyone want to supply some numbers and do the math?
I didn't know this! This is so fascinating! Quick someone mod this article insightful!

People with big brains are more likely to have Occipital buns. I found this from the Neanderthal article.
Incidentally, all I know about neanderthals comes from Robert Sawyer's Homonids series. (sci-fi)
Seeing is to sight as references are to citations. Okay, it was a badly aimed joke, but I didn't expect anyone to reply to it anyway. =)

Unfortunately I am also colour-blind.
There is? I don't see it. I don't get the reference..
Ah, what I meant to say was this.
1. Cartel keeps pressure on the market to artificially keep diamond prices high.
2. Synthetic diamond industry is propped up by the artificial demand paid for by the Cartel.
3. Diamond manufacturing processes thrive on the money being poured into the market.

Thanks for the very interesting post. I know there's still a reason I read slashdot!
Do you have any information about how Windows does memory handling?
Ahha! That, I did not know. Thanks!
And angry with Sony!!
Alternately, Mr. Ballmer will dance for you.
I heard there was an article about this. Are you willing to read it?

I, for one, welcome our new video gaming celebrities.
