    They need to come up with a reliable way to fix this, make absolutely sure it actually fixes the problem, and then make sure the patch doesn't cause crashes on any of the OS variants out there. Otherwise the chaos would be worse.

    Indeed: just imagine the riots in the streets if they accidentally broke Farmville. Having millions more PCs in botnets will be much less harmful.

    The sad thing is, I'm not 100% sure you're wrong.

    The term is "propinquity", the tendency of people to form closer friendships with those they encounter often. For example, in college, people who are assigned room near stairwells tend to end up with more friends than those whose rooms aren't in a major traffic pattern.

    That's like saying that employment pays you not to spend, because if you subsist on less than your income, the rest is profit! The government pays the rebate to create an effectively graduated tax--if anything, having a rebate check come in the mail encourages spending.

    I can have five glasses of water before bed, wake up, and not notice I have to piss until 3 PM the next day (assuming I wake up early, about 11 AM). Even then I'll wait until 4 PM or 5 PM until I do something about it, even though the bathroom is one door down the hall on the right.

    Wow. In what bizarre alternate universe did you think we'd want to know that?

    I was just addressing the post's assertion that dotNet was not going to be more secure than standard Windows. Which is just plain FUD.

    I misspoke slightly when I mentioned seaports--it wasn't just the water access that was important, it was the natural resources *around* the seaports. Putting the border at Mile 25 on the Haines Highway would put Canada in control of the upper Chilkat River Valley, an important watershed rich with forestry, mining and fishing resources. Mile 42 puts the Chilkat River Valley almost entirely on United States soil.

    Also, you're right that the fort's guns were essentially symbolic and wouldn't have been much use in an actual conflict with Canada--but that doesn't mean that they're not still there. Ironically, now they point toward the cruise ship dock.
