  1. Re:Let me get this straight ... on Record Labels To Pay For Copyright Infringement · · Score: 1

This has little to do with the RIAA, which represents the US Recording Industry not the Canadian one. Different country, different organisation.

Canada has the CRIA. Your point is valid, but your aiming at the wrong group of tools. Canada the cost is $20k per infringing copy.

(Note, I use the term 'little to do with the RIAA' because the RIAA has nothing to do with the Canadian branches of these record companies, but they do represent their US branches. As far as I know there is no evidence to say that the US companies had any knowledge of/involvement in this. We'll wait and see if anything turns up though).

They're basically using a philosophy that's 50 years out of date to attack a philosophy that's about 100 years out of date. The book sadly has no reflection on the real work of modern philosophers or philosophers views on physics.

it's a shame that no-one criticising wikileaks realises that mugabe is an insane criminal and murderer who will take advantage of *anything*.

Ah ... I think that was obvious to all whether they criticised wikileaks or not.

it takes wikileaks reporting to expose mugabe by "triggering" him to act out his true (insane) nature, for the world to observe how inappropriate a leader he really is.

Um ... I think the world had already seen enough of that already. It's not like they exposed him. He's just doing what he normally does. The governments of the world don't care. He could wipe out half his nation and the UN will just verbally tell him to stop being naughty.

the days of living in the shadows are over, and the leaders and dictators of the world, as well as the rest of us, need to wake up and realise this.

He doesn't really live in any shadows. The world already knows what he is. If he had oil in his country he'd have been outed by now. I met him once on holiday in Malaysia (I stayed in the same hotel as him). The fact that he is able to travel freely to almost any country is proof of how little the world cares about what he does.

Yeah, a lawsuit for prior art by people who invented the car. Ford just stuck it all on a production line, he didn't invent the thing. Now, if he had of patented a "production line of any sort for things with wheels on it and a motor" he might have killed off GM, Toyota, Nissan, etc etc before they could start up ... or got lots of money from them emulating him, or got sued for monopolistic practises if it became impossible for people to compete.

  8. Nothing New, move along on German Kindergartens Ordered To Pay Copyright For Songs · · Score: 1

At the risk of being modded down.

"... if they reproduce music to be sung or performed, they must pay for a license."

In other words they are treating Kindergarten, Daycare etc like any other organisation. This is a matter of GEMA having ignored something they could have been charging for a long time ago. The rest of the world hasn't been so kind to kindergartens etc. Other Kindergartens etc around the world have needed to purchase licenses (and they don't cost that much) in order to do the same for decades already. If it is a chain of kindergartens or daycare centres, then the head offices will purchase the licenses for the entire chain.

If this is all shocking to some people, just remember, it is probably (like a lot of other things) bringing Germany in line with other members of the European Community, (like Spains new anti-smoking laws are doing in Spain). Why the sudden shock of it happening in Germany when it is already the standard practise everywhere else? It hasn't caused kindergartens in the rest of the world to shut their doors, nor will it do it in Germany. So far German kindergartens have had a free run on something that GEMA could have enforced many many years ago.

Note, that I haven't said whether copyright should be strictly enforced in kindergartens/daycare centres etc, (I'll let you all fight that one with whomever your local copyright agency is), but this is for a license for a kindergarten/daycare centre to use music NOT for incidents involving kids walking around the place humming or singing to themselves. It is strictly for when the music is used in 1. teaching, 2. performances, 3. daycare/kinder/school discos (in the case of 2 & 3 the school/daycare etc often raise money off the canteen and admission etc).

Ways around it include 1. not playing more than 10% of a copyrighted piece in a music/singing class (covered by copyright law as fair use in most parts of the world for learning purposes ONLY), and 2. also using only pieces outside of copyright (public domain tunes such as "twinkle twinkle little star"). In fact, a lot of children tunes do lie in the public domain. It would be a matter of possibly doing what they used to do when I was at school and have a teacher perform the songs on a piano whilst the students sing etc (as opposed to using someones recording on a tape deck or ipod etc which may be covered by copyright on the recording).

My point here being that in spite of the rhetoric being bandied about here, this is hardly a hiccup in the copyright debate. The daycare centres/kindergartens will pay the licenses each year (less than a dollar a kid) and life will continue as usual. This is the same license required by all schools, clubs, associations, DJ's etc etc that have any sort of music being played whether it is a school band performing Louie Louie, or background music in a club where you go to socialise. This law has been around for over forty years. I think the only question relevant here is, 'Why enforce it now?' and the answer is, 'To bring Germany in line with other European Union nations.' Nothing new to see here. Move along.

I read elsewhere that ageing is mostly genetic, so your friends will look older regardless of what they eat. I've been a vegetarian for almost my entire life and I get mistaken for someone 10-20 years younger than my age. My younger brother who is a huge meat eater is often mistaken for the elder of us both. But, I don't think it has to do with what we're eating. Though people mistake him for someone older than me, he also is mistaken for someone younger than what he is.

My mother often gets mistaken for someone about 20 years younger than she is too. She's 'mostly' a vegetarian (but often will eat a fish or something lean every now and then). Your friends and my family are hardly a large sample group, so not enough evidence to make a theory from, but if it was all we had to go on, then I'd say diet has very little to do with how old people look.

Of course, ageing doesn't necessarily equate to how old someone looks either. Some people have very fit lean bodies that are 'younger' than their age but have faces that only a pit bull would love. :-)

There are plenty of other sunken ships made of metal though. Bikini Atoll would be a remarkable place to check, the water temperature is warmer there, but people can still dive on the wrecks. Does the bug only exist in cold temperatures or does it live in the warm tropical temperatures as well?

If is is present on all metal wrecks, can it be used to test water for the possible presence of undetected wrecks? Maybe find the rest of the sunken Japanese Midway fleet (if it hasn't been eaten away yet)???

For instance, they might be saying, "that when people think of Steve Jobs they automatically think of Apple, so therefore the doll is linked to the brand image and they have a case", but that might not hold enough water to proceed).
