They want you to have 10 years of experience...
Not to the technologies listed above.... But I always get a kick when a recruiter/HR person wants you to have 10+ years experience in a technology that's only been around for 2-3 years. I went to an interview in 1999 for a SAN admin job and they wanted 10 years experience in production SAN administration. Ummmm... hmmm Good luck with that!
My apartment building in downtown Boston is directly underneath a Cingular 5 bars billboard advertisement. Yet... I can't get squat on my cell phone in said apartment.
Cingular may be good in other cities, but in Boston it's an utter joke. I quote Cingular when I called to complain about not being able to get any singal at all in DOWNTOWN Boston, "I'm sorry you are in a low population area with limited cell towers, we apologize for the inconvience. Is there any thing else I can help you with?"
Boston = Low population? Guess the call center in India doesn't know which cities in the USA of large populations...
Linux:
-Buy RedHat and buy 24/7 RH support
-Buy a multi processor/8gb of RAM Intel box.
-Buy Remote console and power on/off management ability
-Buy fibre cards for SAN connectivety
-Buy Veritas Volume manager
Sun:
-O/S Free, support comes with the hardware
-Buy a Sunfire V210, dual proc, 8gb of ram. Hey look it's also 64bit
-comes with remote console and power on/off ability
-buy fibre cards for San connectivty
-buy Veritas Volume manager
If you think Linux is cheeper go price out the above. A Dell or HP or IBM server with the above feature that you need to have in your datacenter for a server will easily run you more money then a "comparable" Sun. Keeping in mind that, that Sun box is also 64bit and even in the very low end is faster then that intel box.
Mind you I love Linux and I think Linux has some great fits both in and out of the data center but anybody who says "lets replace all our ***x hosts with linux cause it's cheeper." is a absolute moron. There's many good reasons to have Linux servers, but "it's cheeper" isn't one of those reasons.
FYI I just priced a base dual proc Dell at $13,000 and a base dual proc Sun 210 at $8800. Now take that Dell and add remote management etc. Seriously WTF. Linux on intel is way more money then Sun.
So the shuttle is obviously not cost effective now.
The shuttle is to be retired in 2010.
What is NASA sending to space in 2011? nothing...
It took how many years to develop the shuttle?
It will take how many years to develop what comes after the shuttle? And this project started when? Oh... hasn't started yet.
That's a shame.
>> There are resolution limits in classical optics, even before you include a turbulent atmosphere.
One thing modern telescopes are fully capable of doing, both professional, amatuer and spy, is they shine a laser across the path of the optics then it measure the vibrations it sees in the beam (atmosphere turbulance). Then vibrate the mirror in tune with that turbulance, effectivly eliminating the atmosphere. The resolution diffence is amazing.
LEGOS were and still are the best toy ever. I was about to agree to the above comment about the speciality sets then realized that even tho I had built the Falcon, X-Wing etc the day after Star Wars was released (the first time..) which was long before the sets came out and now my cousin who actually has the speciality sets built those things ONCE then took them apart so he could expand is Moon Base that's been under constant contruction/recontruction for several years now.
He started when he was 8 and he's now 11. He's got every speciality set you can think of and then he took the mind storm sets and has contructed everything totaly from his own imagination. He "wants" more Star Wars speciality sets, not because he wants to build Star Wars figures but because they're the best "Space Legos" you can get. He doesn't build anything at all from the movies.
So IMO the original intent of Legos has survived in at least this one little boy.
After reading through most of the comments and having worked all my life here in the US, but I've traveled to nearly 60 foreign countries. I ask this:
Why, is it now that so many workers from abroad want to come to the US now for work? It seems the salaries are nearly equal or close depending on cost of living and the US workers treat you terribly. So why come?
On the flip side of this question. Why stay? Why should people like me stay? A US born citizen in this US economy, on the decline with all the negative posts on the US above and posts on "how good it is" elsewhere. With many H1-B's returning home, why stay here? Why not seek jobs oversees?
Actually daylight savings was created to conserve oil/coal for electricity. During WWI and WWII the US was big into conservation of resources and factories turing out war machines implitmented daylight savines so that the factories didn't have to use as much electricity for lighting. We care much about energy conservation anymore.
We all counteract any savings now by working longer hours and driving SUV's, and having lights turned on on everything 24/7, so the whole point to daylight savings is well... pointless. I imagine we keep it around for the same reason we keep blue laws around.
HMM dunno about your neck of the woods but around Boston those Mini Coopers are becoming popular as hell. Seems to me small cars do just fine in the US if marketed correctly.
I remember starting up a BBS early early on. Was 2nd or 3rd in my area code. Oh the days of 300baud. Started up on an Apple ][. Saving and saving money for a 1200baud modem. Oh that Applecat Smartcat is still in my closet somewhere. I still find links around the net listing my old BBS, brings back very found memories. When I finally shut it down it was 8 phone lines with USR V.Everything modems running with 4 386 pcs, 2 lines each under Desqview with a Novell Netware file server on a 486 for all the software and downloads. What a trip that was.
Some old favorites: Opus! QBBS, TradeWars, Hack, Dungeon. Loved them all.
Oh and can't forget the ever favorite 2600 distributions.

But do I have to quit playing Evercrack as well?
"Remember, violence never solved anything"
Then what are our troups doing in Iraq? And perhaps we should make 18 the min age for all news sites reporting anything violent?
The should solve even more issues with the children.
Since gov't is responsible for raising our kids now... what is the function of the "parent"?

Don't worry the super secret SG-1 team will fly any incoming rock through hyper-space and pass it harmlessly through the earth. They'll save us all.
