In my estimation no communications company is squeaky clean. So I've decided to go with who gives me the best network coverage and least call drops, and that happens to be Verizon. As much as it pains me, I'm not going to suffer worse service just to stick it to the man.

So did you ever read what your lawyer was arguing on behalf of you? It's way less likely he "didn't have time to understand it" than your lawyer was making overly broad claims and refused to narrow the scope for several years. You have to remember that while you are sitting next to your device and have complete understanding of it, netiher your lawyer nor the examiner have that luxury.

There are a couple more inaccuracies in the summary/article. For example, the production level of an examiner is based upon what art he works in. The case of the 8 hour count is real, but on the extreme end of the spectrum. Also, to the best of my knowledge there is no required proportion of new cases vs. ammendments to be worked on.

  17. Re:"One Problem" Trap on The Real Problem With the US Patent System · · Score: 1

Furthermore, the examiner is ultimately bound by the laws enacted by congress and their interpretation by the judicial system. You could give an examiner an eternity to review a patent application, but if that app does not fall into any formal pitfalls and contains the slightest of inventive concepts, it is going to get through. Loosening the quotas might help bar patents in which additional search time might reveal that last piece of art to cover the allowable subject matter, but it won't fix what is legally able to be patented which I feel is a much bigger issue.

  18. Re:Patents are very difficult to read on The Real Problem With the US Patent System · · Score: 3, Insightful

Your lawyers were simply trying to get the broadest patent coverage for your device. This is largely why you pay them loads of money and why the job of examining applications is a long and drawn out process. By way of an over-simplified explanation, a lawyer wants to broaden your legal coverage to include all sorts of unthought of embodiments (and possibly entirely different inventions) while an examiner seeks to narrow the legal claims you make to specifically what the invention is while having (likely) never seen the thing. Your example illustrates a seldom acknowledged facet of the patent system.

Adding to MoonRat's reply, it seems as though a lot of the high-spec A/V hardware isn't compatible with Linux in some way. I have an ATI All-in-Wonder card because I have a Shuttle with limited expandability but high portability. I get 2d support but it is nearly impossible to utilize the tuner card in any way, shape or form. I bought this piece of hardware for a very specific reason. I'm also not blaming anyone, merely adding that it is unfortunate that the number of "fringe" cases of hardware support in Linux is still fairly substantial.

I have absolutely no idea why so many people are complaining about Linux laptop support. I try Ubuntu live cds about once every 6 months. While the general feeling that I was fighting against the OS to get an install up has definitely subsided in the last 2 years, there are still issues. As much as you would be like to believe based on personal experience that managing an install of Linux is as easy as Windows in every case, it's still not there yet. My biggest barrier to a full install is my Ati TV Tuner and video card. Simply put, if I ditch Windows I lose a piece of hardware I use daily. I don't own a television so until I do decide to buy one I require Windows to use my tuner. Point is, don't assume everyone has as wonderful a time as you are.

I've visited the Creation Museum and it isn't simply a homage to religion or ID, but an outright attack on evolution and science in general.

The place is inexplicably creepy in the way it tries to slowly work you into questioning evolution and then using your growing skepticism to launch a volley of illogical arguments against science. One thing you'll hear a lot during the linear exhibit is how unreliable science is because "it makes a lot of assumptions" in order to arrive at its data. The argument made to refute carbon dating is the logical equivalent to "nuh-uh!" The museum also makes it very clear that you can not in fact really be a Christian unless you believe in 6-day creation as it paints scientists as bumbling idiots and non-believers as empty husks of sin. My only guess is that the place is designed for fundamentalist parents to take their rebellious children to in order to straighten them out.
