I purchased a Dell SmartStep 200N about 4 yrs ago when Dell just released them. They were the first to put a desktop chip inside a laptop. Back then a 2.0 Ghz laptop was pretty much comparable to Desktop computers. My professors used to get pretty impressed when my laptop used to be able to compile code faster then their 1 or 2 yr old desktop computers.

They also provide the easiest setup at LAN gaming parties.

Ever since I purchased my laptop, i've pretty much been using it as my primary computer. My only complain is that I have a problem with it overheating easily; so now I put a fan next to it when I work.

My next laptop purchase will probarbly be in another 4 or 5 yrs, since my current one can do everything I need it to do (except play Doom III).

Anyone have any details on intels version of the macMini?

Plus yeah, why should I buy an entirely new machine just to play games I can do pretty much the same thing on my computer.

If I wanna add extra stuff to my computer, I can find great prices easily. With consoles, everyone is trying to make a buck in royalties.. and u pay quite a bit in royalties.

Plus, I mostly play stragety games. And I usually game when I wanna just chill, do you think I wanna take the time and trouble of hooking up a bunch of cables and stuff when all I gotta do is just pop in a CD.

Consoles appeal to certain ppl, but not me. I'll be sticking with my PC for a really long time. :)

"Individuals with AS can exhibit a variety of characteristics and the disorder can range from mild to severe. Persons with AS show marked deficiencies in social skills, have difficulties with transitions or changes and prefer sameness. They often have obsessive routines and may be preoccupied with a particular subject of interest. They have a great deal of difficulty reading nonverbal cues (body language) and very often the individual with AS has difficulty determining proper body space. Often overly sensitive to sounds, tastes, smells, and sights, the person with AS may prefer soft clothing, certain foods, and be bothered by sounds or lights no one else seems to hear or see. It's important to remember that the person with AS perceives the world very differently. Therefore, many behaviors that seem odd or unusual are due to those neurological differences and not the result of intentional rudeness or bad behavior, and most certainly not the result of "improper parenting".

By definition, those with AS have a normal IQ and many individuals (although not all), exhibit exceptional skill or talent in a specific area. Because of their high degree of functionality and their naiveté, those with AS are often viewed as eccentric or odd and can easily become victims of teasing and bullying. While language development seems, on the surface, normal, individuals with AS often have deficits in pragmatics and prosody. Vocabularies may be extraordinarily rich and some children sound like "little professors." However, persons with AS can be extremely literal and have difficulty using language in a social context. "

I found it quite depressing that sometimes a lot of instructors are more interested in their research work than on actually teaching you the material. They would just teach the top level stuff and expect us to understand the material. They just make u use packages like MATLAB to plot a few graphs and expect u to know how it works.

Like for example, when I learned about JPEG compression, I learned the theory behind the math/concepts, the math involved, the steps on how to compress and I was expected to understand how it worked without ever implementing it.

Or when I took the DSP course and I was learning all these crazy math concepts. Our labs were in Matlab where we had to plot all these graphs, and matlab did all the work. So I learned how to do the math, but I had no idea what I was doing.

I work as a programmer doing communications programming on the server and microcontrollers and I learn most of my stuff from an EE at work who is basically my mentor.

    Hi,

I graduated last summer with a BS in IT, in Software Engineering and Computer and Communication Systems.

In lay mans terms what I did was CS and telecomm engineering.

What I have found is that school doens't teach u jack diddly squat. It mostly teaches ur the basics, and advanced theory.

I did both program cause I wanted to increase my chances of getting a job.
Currently at the Job I work in, I so software dev as well as hardware programming and I love it.

What I would say is do what you enjoy doing. If you like both streams, do a little bit of both like I did and u increase ur chances of landing a job.
However, remember something, a lot of things that get thaught in CS class can also be learned elsewhere. The way I got thaught was oh read these chapters and u'll have a project to do or a test to do. U can just buy the book urself and then study the CS on ur own time while u focus on EE in school.

I think, in IT now a days, everyone need to know how to program.

If ur thinking of going into EE and leaving ur CS curiosity open

    Lean to program in C/C++/Java
Learn about Algorithms and Data Structures
    Learn about OS Architecture
    Learn about Microcontroller Architecture
    Learn about Software Engineering

These are the most important things that u need to know for CS. The rest of what u need to know should be thaught in an EE program.

I would also say, do projects on ur own time. Everyone gets a piece of paper, but what differenciates u from the rest.

Do projects with the skills u learned and keep track of them. Then when u finish and look for a job u can show ur potential employeers what you are capable of. Thats what I did.

For my current job, originally there was only supposed to be 1 opening.
When they had to hire, they narrowed it down to me and this other person. She had a degree just like mine and had Coop exp.
I had no Coop, but I had done lots of projects on my own time.
In the end the couldn't decide so the boss just told them to hire both of us.
So now she works on software projects and I work on some software and some hardware projects.

    Hopefully that helps :)

And last but not least a windows OS :p, yeah yeah.. I know.. but I have the Dev environment to program MS mobile products so why not.

I called their tech support like a number of times and they dispatched their ppl almost immideatedly and each one kept on giving me different answers.

1 Person would tell me that its cause I am far away from their main station. Another tells me cause my wiring is bad (my house was 5 yrs old at the time). And then they used to go down a lot too. Then I asked to speak to customer service and the guy was telling me its cause of 9/11. In my head I'm like yeah right, altough the server I'm trying to access is about 15 miles away from me, all the electrons decided to slow down cause of 9/11. I asked to speak to a manager, the guy said no.

So I switched to Shaw. Shaw has been excellet, almost negligeble downtime, super speeds, and they inform u if they do some servicing and their stuff is going to be down.

To me it seems that this article is trying to point out the need for having a bunch of proofs before arriving to the conclusion of a problem.
For example suppose we are trying to proove the equivalence of two trignometric fractions, we would end up with a bunch of proofs showing their equivalence. Are these proofs really needed anymore to arive at the solution when all a computer will need to do is plug in a test value and obtain the answer.

My main problem with Mathematicians is that when it comes to complex problems, they are able to solve it with relative ease, but usually have no idea what they are doing/solving... i.e. where this applies.
Well there is obviously some need of proofs in certain areas if you want to figure out how things work, but when trying to use math to solve a bunch of problems, you don't need the proofs at all. For example when I wanna solve a problem and need to use math, I just program stuff into Matlab and let matLab use its math libs to do the processing for me...
