seems to be ever decreasing in a constant spiral with each new version. Its already getting slow enough that I don't use it for certain websites (which are admittedly badly written). I play a web-based game a friend of mine has written. After issuing a few orders in it, Firefox just stops working. His HTML is likely crappy and his PHP doubly so, but there is no excuse for it, when I can open the same website up in Safari and it works fine. I want to use FF but I am being driven away from it by the decrepit speed it operates at much of the time.
I am always rattling on about how I distrust companies because they are inherently amoral. In the case of Monsanto I have to say they are the posterchild for all I hate in a big corporation. In my opinion their policies and actions are actually evil.
Their products? Well I am not sure on that. GM is probably fine, but the potential for not fine is pretty high when you are modifying biology - and if you can imagine a biological equivalent to the current BP oil disaster occurring somewhere, you might agree with me. Some well meant commercial GM product that didn't receive adequate testing because developing it cost the company too much and the bean counters want to start shipping NOW, causes an ecological disaster of some kind. Imagine trying to ensure you got all the seeds of a particular species of plant that spread through some area in say Oklahoma, or Kansas.
Nothing will promote civility and mature behaviour on a game forum. Many people are assholes, period. The vast majority of the rest of them are stupid beyond belief. The few who remain can be interesting to have a conversation with, but they are a tiny majority. In any game with PvP involved in it, the ratio of ignorant assholes to intelligent civil players goes through the roof.
I have played and still play a lot of MMOs and the smaller the game, the better the level of civility, the bigger it gets, the more the ignorant asshats show up in numbers.
What I want is not to see the real names of the other players, what do I care? I think of you as your character names anyways. No, what I want is a game where the minimum allowed subscriber age is about 30. That *might* have a chance of toning down the ignorance a bit, but not much.
Its a given assumption by those who are affluent in the US (and Canada where I live) that:
a) If you are poor, you aren't trying hard enough
b) If you are earning less than me, you are "worthless" as in a lesser human being
c) Everyone can change their circumstances at will, and if they don't, then they are just lazy.
Our NA society is predicate upon the principle that having more money makes you a better person. The legal system reflects that, the way the laws are applied reflects that etc. Why? Because the laws and legal system were created by those with more influence and affluence, and are maintained by them.
GS and the other big banks, businesses etc, get politicians elected to office to enact legislation that helps them make more money at the expense of the poor all over the world. In this case they not only managed to do that, but they got a bailout added in.
Its like a criminal robbing a bank, and when they are caught, instead of throwing them in jail, the government gives them the entire contents of another bank as well.
The whole thing is about ICANN making more money, nothing else whatsoever. ICANN is a means to extort money from legitimate businesses and organizations who wish to protect their image. Each new TLD ensures that, and generates more revenue. Since the Registrars control ICANN more or less, its just a cartel making more money for its members.
Harper has been learning from the Bush years and US Republicans it seems. This is a good attempt to ensure all of their corporate "supporters" get paid back for previous election support before the "Conservatives" get kicked out on their ass in the next vote of non-confidence.
Its either criminal behaviour or gross miss-management by Harper's government, take your pick - because nothing on earth can possibly justify this big an expenditure for a 4 day event.
So you are saying that Capitalism is fundamentally incompatible with Democracy? I would have to agree, however the alternatives don't work well either.
Shall we say those with the money make the rules, and there is simply no way around it sadly?:(
While I like William Shatner generally, and I don't disparage him for his - shall we say unique - acting style on Star Trek, I agree that Romeo Dallaire would be a far better choice as the next Governor General for Canada. (Anyone who wants to get a feel for Dallaire might do well to watch Shake Hands with the Devil (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472562/), an excellent movie (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaHAXnOGj9k) about the situation he faced in Rwanda during the genocide there. Likewise of course the book it was based on, written by Dallaire himself.
All in all he is a major Canadian hero in my opinion, and a perfect choice for when Michelle Jean leaves her office.
Canada is part of the Commonwealth of Nations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations), in general we are a happy member of this organization. The Queen is the titular head of the Commonwealth and thus of Canada. Her Governor General is her representative here in Canada. While largely ceremonial, the position does carry some political power and responsibility. The Commonwealth is a friendly relation between its member countries, celebrated in events like the Commonwealth Games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_Games).
The thing is we Canadians are in large part, quite proud of this relationship. If the US hadn't had its revolution, you would likely be a member as well. We acknowledge our British political heritage quite openly, and since there was never an antagonistic relationship between Canada and Britain, its not a big issue. Oh, sure there are Canadians who do not support this relationship - in fact most of one of our provinces likely feels that way (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec - but then Quebec insists on treating itself like a sovereign nation in many regards anyways. Its Provincial Assembly is called the National Assembly for instance. It still has a Lieutenant Governor representing the Queen though, just as do the rest of the Provinces).
We have a strong British heritage here in Canada, reflected in English being one of the official languages (the other being French, since we have a large francophone community centered in but not limited to Quebec), our system of government (Parliamentary Democracy), our legal system etc. Its hardly a hardship to acknowledge that relationship proudly. Canada is of course highly multi-cultural, and in general quite supportive of minorities (our treatment of the native population aside. We have done them no favours whatsoever in my opinion, and still do them a grave disservice).
Canada has come to the defense of Britain during both World Wars. There is a long history of military association with Britain. Many of our units with a longstanding heritage, owe their origins to British units raised here before we became an independent nation. When I joined the Canadian Armed Forces, I swore my oath to support "The Queen and all her heirs and successors in perpetuity" quite happily and seriously. Being Canadian - at least to me - means being proud of our relationship with Britain and the rest of the commonwealth, and that relationship in no way infringes on what it means to be Canadian, rather it enhances it.
Is it worth pointing out that Assange is an Australian citizen, and thus cannot be guilty of treason against the US? Issues of Freedom of the Press aside that is of course. Now I know that won't do any good as an argument in a US court. If they can kidnap him and bring him to a court they would likely try him anyways under some pretext. The problem is they don't want to have a court case because that would enable him to bring up all sorts of details concerning the same classified information that they are trying to keep out of the media in the first place. My bet is he gets hit by a car, or commits "suicide" due to the pressure, or just disappears entirely and we never learn what happened to him.
Virtually no snow, less rain than Seattle, on the Pacific coast. There's a ski-hill nearby and we get the best weather in Canada. We have snow for a few days to a week in the winter, no more. And by snow I mean half an inch to a few inches. The City of Victoria doesn't even own its own snow removal equipment.
Looks like the guys running Echelon (hit) are doing a bit of searching on their own: maybe just shopping: Armani (hit), or maybe they are just bored Playboy (hit), Pornstars (hit), Porno (hit), sex(hit), etc.
I am not sure I want to know what "Bubba the Love Sponge" is in reference to:(
If that list on the register is legitimate, then there are some very sensible looking and some very odd looking trigger words involved. I wonder how many words you have to match on to get a result they pay attention to?
Not that anyone on/. would want to tempt fate or anything:)
It seems to me that the US is being ruled in effect by the power and influence of some of the major corporations. They are certainly pocketing the tax dollars paid by the citizens of the US, ostensibly for the "War on Terror" (the replacement for the "War on Drugs" which was very successful in generating corporate income I am sure). The corporations get richer, they sponsor the politicians that will continue to let them get rich at the expense of the American people, and its seemingly a juggernaut that can't be stopped.
Obama seemed to be the common people's response to their awareness of this, and there has been a tremendous wellspring of support for him early on, but with the massive bailouts to banks and corporations who should rightly have been thrown in jail, not bailed out (and thus rewarded for willful stupidity and greed), I think that support is lessening.
If they have found a trillion dollars worth of resources though, I expect the US will find a sudden need to remain longer - at least until the corporations have sucked Afghanistan dry and spit out the withered corpse. The Afghan people won't benefit en route though, just the Swiss bankaccounts of those Afghani warlords who are bribed to let the companies in to rape the countryside.
I wouldn't all all be surprised that this "discovery" was a decade old and is the main reason the US is in Afghanistan now. Sadly, that would make my own country of Canada just as complicit.
Well I switched from PC to Mac and I have to say it took me all of a day or so to figure out how to do anything I needed to do. Most of my software is OS and I found suitable tools. Sure, there's the odd thing that I have come across since then, but nothing that decreased my productivity noticeably. Actually its more likely the other way around.
Once I figured out that in OS/X the most likely place to find something is where I would expect to find something, I realized the biggest barrier to adapting was unlearning the wierd convolutions I got used to under Windows.
I will never voluntarily run a Windows system for anything more serious than games. Its a crappy OS with a horrible history.
OS X for the win without any doubt
That would be the folks at the Oxford English Dictionary, the only authority on English language vocabulary and spelling etc, that matters as far as many English speakers are concerned.

I listened to Dr Demento all the time when I was a kid.
From the company with the most expensive and most annoying cartridges on the market. Its a shyster move to try to sell more HP ink products to the stupider members of the business community, not a well needed and clever feature.
Yes, there are abridged versions, but to quote the above: "The Oxford English Dictionary has long been considered the ultimate reference work in English lexicography"
From the OED website: "The Oxford English Dictionary is the accepted authority on the evolution of the English language over the last millennium. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. It traces the usage of words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international English language sources, from classic literature and specialist periodicals to film scripts and cookery book"
I don't know how you could possibly claim that there is a better or more complete dictionary of the English language. It might not be the best option for speakers of the American dialects of English because they use unusual spelling conventions, but it is the most complete dictionary possible. And it is available in an Unabridged form as the Amazon link shows.
The $995 US cost might be a barrier for the average user, I admit. I myself only have the 2 volume abridged version, which is more than enough for every day use of course.
As for your post, I suspect "sinked" is merely a dialectally accepted version in your area. "Sunk" is the generally accepted version for standard English I am sure. Its like "waked" versus "woke" etc. There are some dialects of English that have lost the old Anglo-Saxon irregular past tense formations, and have applied the regular formations instead. I myself would never say "sinked". That doesn't make it incorrect, just not the standardly accepted version for English.
So therefore, since it's at it's core an ancient belief, it fits in perfectly in Ancient History. Alongside Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse, Babylonian, Chinese, African, etc creation myths.
No, it's not an ancient belief. It's roughly 22 years old.
But ID is based on ignorance that is thousands of years old, its just that some people are too fucking stupid/ignorant to accept the fact that a literal interpretation of the creation myth in the Bible is complete idiocy. Only a fucking moron or someone who is self-deluded believes in ID IMHO

Available in a mere 20 volume set:
