With the gaim-encryption plugin, you can use 4096 bit rsa with any of those protocols, not to mention protocols like IRC etc. I highly doubt any browser-based encryption scheme can compare with that.

  2. our school on LAN Party at a High School? · · Score: 1

When we had lan parties at our school, we did it in the cafeteria, and a few people would just bring in some large hubs they had lying around.

You can charge at the door if you are trying to raise money, and you could even rent out games, sell drinks, run tournaments or whatever (a dollar to enter and the winner gets a free 6 pack of bawls).

The problem this is the lack of game options. Unless you have a super lax district, any FPS isnt going to work. Games like warcraft 3 and starcraft are great games to play at lan parties, and who can ever resist the thrill of playing microsoft hearts over the network.

I havn't owned a tv in over 2 years. Ive found that I can download anything that I would want to watch, and in general it is a higher quality, and in many cases I can get the shows before they air on the west coast anyway.

TV really has little to offer those with fast internet, but with the recent troubles (#tvtorrents etc) who knows where things will end up :-/

I personally think it is absurd for tv networks to fight the downloading of their shows. If they offered torrents for download (even with commercials) in a timely manner, it would cost them no bandwidth, and their commercials and shows would reach a larger audience.

with further caffine, I realize that the number will only be 8 or so digits long, and I suppose that would only take 3 or so seconds to say. That makes things a bit simpler, there are quite a few tricks you can do with that, for example the last digit of your 100 digit number will be the same as the last digit of your answer etc.

  5. proof? on Math Whiz Breaks Calculation Record · · Score: 1

Im confused as to how you can prove that you did the calculation in 11.8 seconds, wouldn't it take longer than that to write it down? You are looking at a 50 digit number, so at that rate you would need to be writing down 5 numbers per second even if it only took you 1.8 seconds to realize the answer.

On the other hand it would not be superhumanly hard to come up with the first number in 11.8 seconds, and then write down the rest as you calculate it. The same thing applies to saying it outloud.

I dont think the film industry needs more money to make better films. For the past 20 years movies coming out of hollywood have been on a steady slope downwards, about 98% of the good movies that have come out in the past few years have not come from LA. If sharing movies over the internet ends up causing the demise of the over bloated film industry, i say good riddance.

God forbid movies go back to being artistic instead of the two hour long commercials that they are now.

It really is the sensationalism that's the key issue. These people dont get arrested for doing damages or anything like that, its all about the image. There was somewhat of a media frenzy when this first happened, which made cisco look bad. The only way to counter-balance that is to takedown the kid responsible. Arresting some kid in england isn't going to stop future breakins. They prolly get busted into all the time, but when the person you are talking about got 11.3, there wasnt a major story about it, so cisco did not need to waste money to correct the situation.

Also even if cisco did release the code for its routers, it's architecture is so specialized that you need quite expensive machinery to even get it compiled, so it wouldn't enjoy the massive development base that linux has.
