Slight uber-geek nitpick, there is no "tra" sound in Japanase, it was probably tora, but in English, it sounds kind of dumb to have that extra o in there, so they took it out and made a perfectly good alien drug cartel name from it.

Probably because until recently, Vodafone in Japan was J-Phone, a Japanese cell phone carrier, so they inherited most of their infrastructure. Also Verizon in the US IS NOT Vodafone, Vodafone just owns a decent chunk of the company(though that did prevent vodafone from bidding to buy AT&T wireless, though I wish NTT had been able to buy them)
well, first of all, whing on the internet never achieved anything(or all/.ers, myself included would be overacheivers). As I see it, you have 2 solutions: quit or organize
It's not like the CEO is secretly stealing millions in retirement accounts or anything, yes he is making a lot of money, but you knew that before you took the job. You don't like the working conditions there, don't work there. I highly doubt that someone who works at EA games can't get a decent job somewhere else. My bet is that he works there because he loves(or loved) what he was doing. It's not like it's a 19th century coal mine or anything, he won't die at work, so I fail to see how these working conditions are at all opressive.
If he still loves the companyh but doesn't like it's ceo, then he can also organize a strike, let the company know you mean business. Though honestly you are unlikely to invoke much sympathy over a white collar worker's problem at a video game company....
The ETS created a test to see whether or not people deserve to live. To take the test, one has to fork over $5k and a kidney, but ETS says that this test is necessary, "For the continuation of our species"...who am I to question the ETS.....

where how the user plays creates the comedy? I laugh my ass off when I am playing Monkey Ball with friends because of some of the wonderfully random ways you can kill your monkey. The best comedy is usually unscripted, and the best games usually provide lots of unscripted comedy(whicih is also another reason why I don't play 1 player games or games on the internet, too boring)
You seem to have missed my point entirely. Most Christians I meet are anti-non-Christian bigots(hell, a lot of them are anti-everyone but those in my denomination-bigots. I tried coming to a consesus with them and I fail miserably. Why? Because they believe in absolutes, and coming together with an infidel is not part of their ideal for the government. They call it a Christian nation and want to make baptisms a part of the requirement to be a citizen, George Bush the elder said he doesn't even think that atheists are patriots. How am I supposed to react to such bigotry?
Please, Christians in this country love to play the victim, while the persecute those who do not agree with them. I'm sorry, but I am just plain tired of Christians, I'm plain tired of, "Oh, Islam isn't a violent religion, just a few extremists" BS(The extremists are going to a mosque somewhere, and if these muslims aren't complicit they are complacent). I'm just so fucking sick and tired of preachers who say that because I'm a "liberal atheist", HItler and Mother Theresa are equivalent to me. When Christians stop persecuting atheists, when muslims stop blowing themselves up, when Jews stop shooting children in Palestine, when Hindus stop going on rampages murdering people simply because they are of a lower caste, then maybe I will start to "tolerate" religion.
For instance, Hollywood is one of the primary conduits from which liberal attitudes are broadcast to the nation. Almost invariably, Christianity is portrayed in a negative light in films and on television. Christians are pyschopaths, cult members, rapists, murders, etc. Last night I watched "Drawn Together" on Comedy Central. At one point a character was talking about how gullible the princess character was, that she would believe anything you tell her. Then it cuts to a scene of the princess reading a Bible, and she says, "So, he died on the cross for our sins? Okay, I can believe that!" I'm sure there will be no outcry about that. However, can you imagine what would happen if instead she had been reading the Koran, and said, "So, there's no God but Allah? Sure, I can believe that!" There would be lawsuits, FCC fines and congressional hearings. This is just one of many examples. Democrats need to treat Christianity with the same respect they treat Judaism and Islam. When Mel Gibson actually comes out with a movie that glorifies Christ, he is scorned and attacked.
I would have laughed my ass off if they made a joke about the Qoran, but alas they didn't. My main reason for being antagonistic towards Christians is that they are antagonistic towards me. I've been called a baby killer because I am pro-choice, I have been called evil because I'm an atheist. The damn Christians just won't leave me alone, they want to teach creationism in our schools, they want people to pledge their allegence to their god etc.
I honestly feel like going on a crusade against all religions. Fundamentalist Islam is very violent, but go back about 7 centuries or so and you will find Christianity was very violent and Islam was tolerant. The lesson? Any religion can be abused for political gain, and the more false promises you make to people about heaven and martrydom, the more feverent they become.
Religion was a quanit little idea, a way to attempt to explain the universe around us before the invention of microscopes and telescopes. However, it is completely useless in modern days, and just halts the progress of humanity. I yearn for the day when there are no churches, no mosques, no Hindu temples, no Buddhist shrines, no sinogogues, just people, people who realize that we are only around here for a short time and the best way to get through that is to help everyone out. Until then I will be indignant towards Christians, Jews, Muslims etc, esp. if they feel it's their duty to tell me what a horrible human being I am for not believing in their version of "Truth"
It could just be that this is the easiest way for Darl to cipher what funds SCO had left to his brother then get out much richer than if he would have just let SCO die it's inevetible death.
FYI: Japans nuclear safety record is deplorable compared to that of Europe or hell even the US. This year they had an accident that killed about 5 workers or so, and last year they had to take a bunch of reactors ofline for gross safety violations. Why weren't these violations reported beforehand? Because the people who were inspecting the reactors and found problems were told not to report the problems by their superiors, and in Japanese culture, it's considered extremely rude to go over your supervisors head(not to mention the tons of poinless bereaucracy inherent in Japanese companies)
Also FYI: Japan only generates about 20% of it's energy needs from nuclear power, and the US generates about 30.
If you are looking for a model country for showing off the benefits of nuclear power, Japan is not the country you should be pointing out. Western European countries are much better examples of how nuclear power can work.
if this will help safety out at the power plants. Japan has a (comparatively) horrible safety record when it comes to nuclear power compared to Western Europe and the US....
should expire after 5 years. I am generally an advocate of patents for VERY SPECIFIC things that obviously required a lot of R&D, but lets face it, if you can't make money off a patent in 5 years, you are in the wrong industry........
what do/.ers think is the most hackable portable music player? I have a few things that I would love to do with my player, such as making audio "flash cards" for the languages I am learning, along wiht the word printed on the screen(I'm learning Chinese and Japanese, so it would be nice if I could take advantage of the fact that the iPod can render all those characters).
It's pretty obvious it's possible to do this on the iPod, but Apple won't release SDKs for it. Are there any players that will let you program them to achieve such a thing?
Heh, it's interesting to see how much excise taxes actually push up the price of something. I'm not a smoker, but if you go to enough convience stores, you can soon figure out how expensive they are just by listening to the totals of the people in front of you in line. They are what, about $4.50-$5.00 a pack. But in Japan(where everything is more expensive cept healthcare, alchohol and cigarretes), you can buy AMERICAN cigarretes for about $2 from a vending machine. Amazing, it's obviously more expensive to ship them to Tokyo than it is to New York, but it's cheaper in Tokyo. Same with alchohol. You can get a decent size Beefeater Gin for about $5 too.
However, rice also costs $15 for about 5 pounds(because of a 490% tariff on foriegn rice), so it's not all good:P
How about grammar though. For instance, I work with a lot of Chinese people on a daily basis. Even though they may spell the words correctly, their grammar is just terrible(often to the point that I don't know what they are saying). Is our brain also wired to only accept certain classes of grammars? For example in Chinese verbs aren't really conjugated, (well not conjugated in the same sense as say French verbs) If you want to say did not go, you just use the word for not in front of go. If you say something happened yesterday, you don't need to specify that the verb is past tense(For example I could say: Yesterday I go to the store). This can lead to a lot of very confused English. Is it a case of trying to draw parellels to languages where they don't exist or is it that the way people's brains are wired if they learn Chinese as their native tongue, they have a much harder time processing both English phenomes and grammar.
is how Stewie can speak with a Rex Harrison accent and an articulate vocubulary depsite living in Rhode Island with a bunch of people who aren't exactly geniouses......
regardless of their native tongue. I'm curious as to why then it becomes much harder for adults who are native speakers of one class of language(say Romantic) to learn languages that are not related to their native tongue(for example Chinese speakers who learn English and vica-versa). The summary doesn't state if perhaps we are teaching language the wrong way. I know that our ability to learn languages decreases as we grow older, but I seriously think there is something lacking in the way languages are presented in high school/college.
The question becomes now, can we take this data and apply it to teaching languages?
Um, the election you are thinking about wasn't won by FDR, it was won by the VP he picked for his 4th term, Harry S. Truman. That election is where the famous, "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline comes from. The press was so confident in the polls that they went ahead and predicted the election(you are right in that the polls were biased in favor of people who owned phones, which at that time leaned heavily Republican)
