I think Apple should license their OS one way or another. For American people, they don't care whether Apple dominate whole personal computer business or not. But for other parts of World, it doesn't make sense that they have to pay one US company for the OS AND the Computer. There're many PC vendors throughout the World. And most PC profit will be kept within their countries. But not so much if everyone has to buy Apple computer.

I think at least, Apple could start 'OS X Compatible' sticker program, so they can get some cut for clone PC and license their OS.

When the keyboard package arrived, I didn't think there's keyboard inside of the package because it was quite thin. And the weight of keyboard is little lighter than other usual keyboard. It also has 2 USB ports on the back which I use frequently for my USB drive.

I wouldn't be surprised if IBM to recreate java class libraries. IBM developed lot of different compilers, not to mention several languagues themselves. Also most of java technology is borrowed from Corba. That's why most of Corba vendors, including IBM, now develop J2EE products. So, it's probably time consuming but not difficult for IBM to recreate java class libraries. Besides, IBM has to improve java performance on their server (zOS? AIX? or Linux?) anyway.

I guess if EVERYONE is converting to JAVA, then nobody is using any other language... :)

C/C++ had been a number 1 choice for lot of software vendor. When java first came out, you didn't see whole lot of company behind it. Only Sun, of course, Netscape and IBM were one of them. Then we saw more company support java. Java became more mature product, it's been around several years. You can't just compare user space between .net and java for now.

And if you are worried about .net might not be cross platform compatible, it's all depend how to code it. You can even write java that is not cross platform compatible. Because mono doesn't fully implemented windows form (gui stuff), they can't created a sample program that compatible on MS windows. We'll definately see current software vendors that support MS window will use .net in the future. And you will see .net support on Unix. If a company has lot of code that written in Cobol, then it will be much easier for them to convert their code to support .net than java.

Of course, it's microsoft. It's something we can't never trust. But technology-wise, .net is more interesting than java. For server side programming, why should you lock yourself to just one language? (well, maybe 2 including jython)

  13. Re:What are the chances for survival!? on Mono and .NET - An Interview · · Score: 1

While I agree with you that MS won't be happy if mono /unix become more popular platform than windows, as long as they steal programmers and companies from java world, I think MS will be happy.

I think .net is more nice framework than java/j2ee. .net already has not only C# but visual basic, C++, eiffel and etc. Only other popular language than can run on java runtime is jython(python). And I'm sure jython people can easily ported their code to .net. After all, all the nice new features of C# is copied from java.

Think about it. If this trend continue, lot of current language developers want to port their language to .net. And .net will be their favorable choice.

As long as MS makes damn good development tool, eg. Visual Studio .net, Windows will be major platform to develop software, whether the software will be deployed on mainframe Unix (assuming it has .net framework either by MS or mom), or other desktop.

  14. Re:XML And Java.. on XML and Java, Developing Web Applications · · Score: 1

XML is here to stay. But I guess java and J2EE will have some tough journey again .NET

I see J2EE as some solid implementation similar to CORBA. But one of big disadvantage is the language. While there are maybe hundred other language project that try to create java byte code, other than jython I don't see any big suppor. Meanwhile, .NET already has C#, C++, Visual Basic, Perl, Python and etc. And those languages are hugely popular ones also (well... maybe not C# for now, but it will be..). I'm not sure how much you can do java stuff with J#, but you could say .NET has some level of java compatibility also.

.NET is heading the way that once CORBA had dreamed of. Old CORBA vendors/developers are now doing J2EE instead. I don't blame them, since J2EE is much easy to do than CORBA. And maybe those shops will join .NET in the future. Of course MS doesn't provide .NET for UNIX yet, but we'll see what MS will do at LinuxWorld Expo.

I think only way CORBA to survive is to implment something like .NET as CORBA 3.0 (or 4.0)

I heard about this japanese game that if player follow this girl long enough, you can rape her at the end. I guess people can say same thing about this game. "This game is fun". "I like to play this game but I'm not a rapist". But when I first heard about this game, I thought this is too extreme. Then I relized how much I'm comfortable with violence in game. Sure I don't think I will be a violent person, yet somehow I'm enjoying the role in a game. Who knows, when I play the rape game, maybe I will enjoy playing the rapist role too.

I'm not saying we should ban all of violent games. But we should think about this... somehow... I don't have a good solution myself.
