  1. Hospital on Death Penalty For Hackers? · · Score: 1

I work at a hospital..what if one of our critical care systems were to be infected? Now, we have backups and take pains to ensure that no outside things can get in, but nothing is foolproof. If it affects the care of patient (I.e doctor cant get into a system to see past history of medications right away), who's fault is it? What if it infects the police computer system, and a cop in a squad car cant identify a criminal who has a warrant out, and then he goes and commits murder that would have been prevented? Extreme and unlikely examples, yes, but people who write such things open up the possibilities that this may happen and they should be punished. Do they deserve the death penalty? I don't think so, but life is a reasonable sentence considering the systems that it could affect.

I think Walmart gives an example of why 100% pure capitalism is a bad thing. Walmart tends to lower the standrd of living in many of the communities it moves in, and increases the unemployment rates. Even when their practices are perfectly legal, they tend to hurt many of the small businesses in the community. Free market, you say? Well, if 'free market' lowers the standard of living for so many people, then the concept is flawed. A lot of free market supporters use the same fervor as the socialists/communitsts do when defending their idealogy and fail to realize there is no such thing as a perfect system. Something nice I read on www.stophiphop.de (got pointed there by a comment on www.macguardians.de) is this nice story of a hacker: http://www.beast.mos-worlds.de/modules/new...php?s toryid=184 (site might be down, quite a lot of people are reading this).

In case you don't speak german (just as this hacker), I've tried a little translation to english. I might have made some spelling errors, but the original spelling wasn't perfect either. The guy really said "buy buy" in the german version. I've posted this on the forum on http://www.desertcombat.com before, so if this looks familiar, might be the same. I've corrected some mistakes and put the < > back to the right version (The DC forum does not support them). All censoring was done by this particular forum here.
Notice that in germany we get DST earlier than in the US.

The story starts (I'm shortcutting here) with an [Please control your cussing] insulting everyone on the IRC channel. Most people there believed it was rather funny, but it got even more funny. For information: The dangerous hacker is called bitchchecker and the one being hacked and original author of the comments, who is talking here, is known as Elch. 127.0.0.1 is always the IP-adress of the computer you're currently using, any request there will return to your computer.

Crackpottery would be saying something is true and then saying everything must conform to that. Science doesn't work like that. You have a bunch of data, and you make a theory that best fits the evidence. Or you make a theory that makes some prediction. That theory remains valid until some piece of data is uncovered that does not fit in with the theory, at which point the theory is modified.

Right now, black holes are what seem to fit observations and theory. If we get more data (perhaps what this article is referring to) that does not conform, then the theory will change with it.

Thats not crackpottery, thats the way its supposed to work. There is no such thing as a 'final' theory. Its a process.

If I had a choice between 2GHZ and 1GB ram, vs. a 4GHZ and 512mb ram, I would definatly recommend the former. So although this technology will help some people, most people should stay away from it if you are just doing day to day. Does grandma really need dual core processors for sending email and browsing the web anytime soon? Hell, a 500mhz and 256mb is more than enough for a lot of people to write documents and browse the web, but you will never see such a system on Dell website for $120 :).

Most people agree that the first two movies were pretty much a disgrase to the fanchise. It seems Lucas has decided that special effects should be the focus of the story, instead of the story. The originals were groundbreaking in their look, but also magnificently told a story. The new movies lack that. With that said, the second one was slightly better than the abortion that was Episode 1. From early word, the new movie will be dark and full of action, and hopefully it will be worthy of the name Star Wars.

Another good book is 'Relativity and Common Sense'. It explains the logical progression from Newton to Einstein. It starts off with Gravity, newtonian principles and then starts adding twists. However, I think that quantom mechanics probably was a bigger discovery than Einstein. The concept of chance at the atomic level was a revelation, and even Einstein had trouble accepting it. However, we can only hope that within our lifetime, someone will succeed in crafting the 'THeory of Everything' which combines theory of large objects such as Planets, galaxies of Einstein with the theory of small things such as atoms of quantam mechanics.
