You'll notice that the first time this story came up, it was merely to point out the MPAA's actions in regards to sites that listed TV shows. In this article, a quite valid question has been raised regarding the fact that these shows have already been broadcast - ie I pay for cable, I pay for cable broadband, so what's the diff? The business model is still the same, the cable company gets my money either way for the same content.
Isn't it funny how the only "exploits" people can find for Mac OS X almost always exclusively revolve around social engineering, and never real flaws in the platform itself?
Since almost all wireless routers and firewalls...out there are already running Linux...
Hmm indeed, considering I own/setup quite a few different brands of routers for myself/friends/family/etc and I have found the balance to be about 50/50 between *nix & windows (quite a lot of linksys routers report win2k as their OS). Either way, these are dedicated routers/firewalls you are talking about, not desktop machines, so this is an 'apples to oranges' comparison at best.
...So what if it takes under 20 minutes to install a full system...and the only work performed on them was to type "apt-get upgrade dist"...
That's all the work you do to your system? Please sir, may I have your IP? It's in the national interest, sir, no need to be worried! *insert devious rubbing of hands and maniacal laughter here*
...Linux and *BSD may be more secure than Windows...
The operative word here is may. Sure, my Linux box is secure, but that is because I have spent hours, no, days, no, months learning about the strengths and weaknesses of the Linux variant I run. So far, I have been fortunate to not have been caught by the holes and exploits that are there that I may not know about or haven't been made public yet. But you know what? I have spent an equal amount of time learning the strengths and weaknesses on my XP Pro box as well, and I have had the same amount of security issues on that machine as well - namely zero. I feel it is worth noting here that both machines have a constant 'net connection and are rarely taken off line.
Any OS that is installed right out of the box will have gaping holes that you could drive a bus through, and let's face it, that's what 90% of the boxes out there are. Sure, the Win boxes will get hit faster because they are the big target right now, but go out and get a store-installed *nix box, plug it in and see how fast it gets rooted.
Bottom line, if you don't know the workings of the system you are running quite well, you will be taken out. And even that is no guarantee.
What does it take for MSFT users before they finally get enough?
When you can install *nix and plug in your camera and have it work automatically. When you can plug in your wireless card and have it work with little/no knowledge of the inner workings. When you can plug in your joystick and have it work with little fuss. When you can buy a game off the shelf for your joystick and have it work. When you can stick in a floppy disk and write to it without spending hours browsing the net and looking at cryptic/etc/fstab files and long-winded mount commands. Don't get me wrong, *nix is great if, like 99.999% of us here, you're a flaming geek who's driven to tweak every little aspect of your box. However, as far as Joe User is concerned it should just work. Joe sticks his keys in his car, it goes. He sticks his bread in his toaster, it toasts. Why should a consumer-level computer be any different? Until this grade 3 leetist "I run *nix, you M$ lusers are teh suxors" crap stops, this is how it's gonna be.

See, that's why I never eat at KFC anymore. It just seemed a little fishy to me...

Scientist: "Hmmm, that comet looks interesting. I think I'll run into it with this camera."
I guess scientists are big kids with better sticks.

So, how long before someone loads Linux on this puppy?
Hell, they even talk English! :-)
;)
That's becasue they all have a babelfish.
It's interesting that articles like this don't blame Microsoft. One wonders how Microsoft arranges that.
Sure thing, I'll start wondering right after the day that I am allowed to blame RedHat when I bork my Fedora install.
M$ can not and should not be held responsible for their end user's ignorance.
Let's see...$3000 for 20,000 windows boxen works out to 15 cents per machine. Yeah boy, that's about what one is worth.
Highly insightful, considering that you can get Linux for free.

They want *me* to pay for games.. so that I can see advertisements??!
Why are you so surprised? You already pay to see ads on TV, at the movies, in your magazines, in the newspaper...
This is what happens when you just shrug at the next minor inconvenience that comes along...
