is that alternative or Alternative? The software they are distributing is not that interesting in itself, nor foss, so I guess you meant little 'a'.

A much cooler reason that this is cool is that any potential threat to MS's monopoly on the home office forces MS to innovate to stay in the competition.

I'm of the opinion though that MS Office is already an extremely good product, I just don't find the price attractive.

Well thankfully Jobs did say that the 'iTV' was it's codename, and that they needed to come up with a better one. I would certainly be annoyed if it came out with that name, as in the UK we have a TV station called ITV that is already deeply embedded in my head, so I get the wrong neurons firing every time I see 'iTV'.

everyone gets something different from uni, it might not have been his cup of tea though. I knew plenty of people who weren't into the whole uni thing even though they were studying for their degree. It was always very strange watching them shoot out of their lectures straight for their cars to get off campus as quickly as possible while the rest of us levitated towards the student union bar (if we had made it from the bar to lecture in the first place!).

people have different priorities, I don't think he should be berated for his.

Well to give an example of how passionate some people were about it I'll use a very famous example, the late, great Mr John Peel. Without a doubt my biggest musical hero John Peel DJ'd for Radio 1 for a very, very long time. He was also a vinyl collector, and he had so much (I'm talking rooms and rooms from floor to ceiling) that his house had to be reinforced because of the weight of all his records.

Vinyl might sound bad to you, but to lots of us it sound great, different and special.

  14. Re:How is that any different... on Analog Revival Means Vinyl Will Outlive CD · · Score: 4, Insightful

I live in a City of Vinyl, Bristol in the UK. The reason that vinyl is prevalent here is two-fold. Firstly we have a massive tradition of DJs in Bristol. Secondly we have a massive tradition of good music and people who are passionate about it.

Passionate music lovers do enjoy having a physical object that represents a link between them and the band they love. More than that there is a massive amount of street cred in owning and listening to vinyl, it's just cool. Also, a great many people feel that Vinyl just sounds better than CD. Finally, people enjoy the size of the cover art. Cover art died with the CD, a great many people believe that. The revival of Vinyl means the potential of new and great cover art.

Buying vinyl is massively different from buying a CD.

Ok this might be pushing the envelope of believability but perhaps the heavy duty bullet proof + tank proof ones might be just what the Soldiers currently stationed in Iraq need. I recently read a fascinating article about the current trend of high electronics going on there. Soldiers have nothing to do with their time and have lots of money on their hands so they are buying electronics (like ipods) and getting it shipped to them gratis (via the American governments free postal service).

Apparently barracks are filling up with HD plasma screens and gaming rigs. Not surprising when their job must be so boring. Room for some indestructible ipod cases methinks.

well why don't we look at what this list potentially says.

A great deal of the users on flickr are amateur photographers, I have recently become interested myself. From my experience of flickr the people on their know their kit. So if a great many flickr users are using entry level canons then that is enough to at least recommend them to me.

From there I go to a place like dpreview.com, check out their review of the canon eos 350D and see that it is both a good camera and reasonably priced (within my budget).

    So, to recap:

    * a great many people on flickr use the canon eos 350D
    * websites that give extensive useful reviews like the eos 350D
    * the price is within my budget as an amateur photographer, to get me started with my first digital SLR

    does that answer your question?

The top 4 cameras are sub $1000 cameras. I realize everyone isn't prepared to pay $800 for a camera, but they aren't professional. I would but them in the high end consumer, amateur photographer category, so yeah I would say it's useful. I own a 350D myself. It's my first Digital SLR camera and I am very happy with it. A list like this would have influenced me.

Could we all please agree to advertise Ubuntu then please k thanks bye? No, you'd rather support Mandriva? Well now we got a problem.

It seems to make sense to advertise a particular distribution, but which one? Unless everyone decides to get their support behind a particular distribution then all people will see being advertised is an incoherent mess saying "Use This Distro!", "No, Use this one!" etc. At least with Windows and Mac os x the choice is clear.

Many advocates would argue that the great many linux flavours is one of it's strengths, I feel it's a weakness and a bad one at that.

Also to a great number of uninformed people think Linux is just another operating system, they have no idea what a kernel is. Why should they ever need to think any different? Do they really need to know what a kernel is, or what a window manager is?

Everyone loves to argue about the flexibility of linux, but for every ounce of flexibility you give a system you add to its complexity. Time to par it down, unify linux under one name and advertise that.

If not, quite simply no market share.
