I am a new father and I certainly understand your point. I am very concerned about the effect that the way women are portrayed in the media will have on my daughter. My wife and I are already discussing the problems with things like the internet. I have made my position well known with her. I don't want to restrict my daughter's access to some incredibly valuable tools just because she might stumble on something offensive. I would rather sit down and have a frank discussion with my daughter and show her some actual data to impress upon her that what she sees on the internet and on tv and in magazines is not an accurate picture of real women. I consider it my responsibility to combat the false message that is being spewed by the mainstream media.

  11. Sony PRS-505 on Which eBook Reader is the Best? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I have the Sony PRS-505 and I love it. It feels wonderful. The screen is amazing (I believe it is the same screen as is used in the Kindle). I use linux, so I don't use the Sony Connect software. I use libprs500, which is a nice little program available for windows, linux and mac. I get my books from places like ebooks.com in Microsoft Reader (win2k in a virtual machine) format because the DRM can be broken and the files are easy to convert to a properly formatted PDF with OpenOffice. I only use the reader for reading books, so I can't speak to the quality of the music player. I can easily read 3000 pages on a charge. It is rated at 7500 page turns, but it still uses a tiny bit of power when it is just sitting there (unless you do an actual shutdown which is not obvious how to do and the startup time from completley off is significant). It took me about 25 pages of reading on the reader before I managed to stop admiring the device and get drawn into my book. Now, I can start reading a book and I almost forget I am using the reader.

I don't know much about the PSP and only a little more about USB, but I believe that the PSP is a USB device only. Since it is not a USB host it doesn't supply power to the USB port. So, to get a keyboard connected and powered up you would have to at least do a little to get the power working. Sure, it isn't much but it is more than an adapter.

  15. Re:Don't let your wedding photographer bully you! on Your Digital Photos Are Too Professional · · Score: 4, Interesting
I had the same experience. I started by going to the "best" wedding photographer in town. He maintained full ownership of the photos and no one else could take pictures. I told my wife, "I don't think so."

I found another photographer that only charged 50 dollars extra for me to keep complete rights to the photos if I didn't buy one of his wedding packages and anybody could take pictures. If I bought one of his wedding packages then the rights were included.

One of the best things that we did is put little disposable cameras on the tables at the reception. We collected them at the end of the night and had them developed. There were some great shots (and a few disturbing ones) on the disposables that the pro missed.

One thing that I worry about with a pro that keeps the rights is they may only give you the photos that they liked. If any were really bad you will never see them. We had a few photos that were not very good, but captured a particularly important event.

I guess it is just a matter of if you draw a distinction between 'collecting' and 'buying' points. Overall I think that the system is fair. In fact, it is something that I was saying should happen for a long time. I would get really pissed when I returned a movie two days late and the late fees combined with the original rental fee were enough to purchase the movie. My issue with this is if they clearly mark what they will charge you for the movie. Blockbuster regularly sells previously viewed movies at or below 10 dollars. I would hate to be charged the retail price of 20 dollars for a movie that they are selling in the store for 10 dollars.
