  1. Encyclopædia Britannica's article on Can Wikipedia Ever Make the Grade? · · Score: 1

The Encyclopædia Britannica article is gearing up to make featured article status. Ironically this may happen as the English version of wikipedia approaches 1.5 million articles (currently aprox 1.45mil). The coming months will be very interesting...

  2. Re:Don't start from scratch; branch on A Look Inside Citizendium · · Score: 1

I tend to think that a better development model could improve Wikipedia. A moderation system, like Slashdot's, could assign "reliability" ratings to edits, based on the quality of a person's previous contributions. It could rank the priority of changes up for review using the reliability of the person making the changes. Contentious articles that get locked down could only be locked down to people below a certain reliability score.

The whole point of wikipedia is trust. Users don't have to be 'reliable' just to get privs to touch something; users don't have to build up plaudits. Wikipedia trusts you, even if they do have to vandal patrol the bejesus out of the whole dang thing. It's worth it to be able to say: Wikipedia, the encyclopedia that anyone can edit.

I have 17 extensions and my ram never goes above about 130, and since 2.0 RC2 not really above 70. I use multiple tabs and leave it open all the time. The problems individuals have must be something else, cause all the reports I hear are varied, and every build of FF 2.0 RC2, as far as I know, is the same. I think it's user-end personally.

  4. Just finished college myself on University of Virginia Student Graduates in One Year · · Score: 1

I just finished college, with a degree in Psychology, and I'm going on to an MSW program in DC. I'll tell you, as someone who thinks they got most out of their experience at collge, I'll remind you of the words of Mark Twain: Never let schooling interfere with your education.

I had that on a piece of paper above my bedroom door. I took 20 units each quarter for my last two years (15 = norm). I did field studies that weren't required for graduation. I took classes at community colleges that didn't apply to my degree.

That said, I also went out with friends every weekend. I lived in a house with 10 other people, and so by the end of my 4 years I knew just about everyone in town. Music: college was worth it for the music exposure alone. Drugs: they aren't fundamentally wrong, evil or bad; everyone learns their limits. It's important. Sex: the best time to have lots of it is in college; always wear a condom. Always. Wear. Condoms.

There is nothing wrong with being busy in college; there were others that were even busier than me (my friend for instance created his own Bioethics degree while being an RA while working fulltime). But leave space for sex, drugs and rock and roll. No other time will you have stories about eating a sandwhich naked at your best friends birthday party, or friends peeing in two-dozen bottles and leaving it in someone's room as a prank. There is more to education than SCHOOL. You have to learn how to have fun too. And you have to learn who you are. The degree is for employers, not you.

I'm sorry, but the ol' days of Bungie before they got bought out by Microsoft (man, at the time I was thinkin' that was a cold day in hell) had one of the best games of all time. Marathon. Little is it known but this game gave _birth_ to the rocket jump. The story line was friggin phenomenal. It could be scary as hell. Coming out just a year after doom, it made all the right changes (larger deathmatches, multiple floors per level, etc). And let us not forget the game that gave birth to the age old crazy AI video game meme. That was a golden egg for sure.

...you might see that Ryan Paul wasn't just turning his nose up at FireFox:

"As a Firefox user and a software developer, I am personally very disappointed with the removal of this innovative feature. With over 1,000 bookmarks to keep track of, I was really looking forward to being able to leverage the SQLite database engine for bookmark organization and management. That said, my disappointment is tempered by my capacity to appreciate the rationale for such a delay. In the world of software development (both open and proprietary), such delays are common and they typically result in software that is more polished and reliable. As long as inclusion of the feature isn't delayed indefinitely, the consequences of this particular decision will most likely be positive ones."

We can't even begin to pretend we understand enough about HIV to make a "cure". Once you have it, you have it. You can treat it, but nothing else. There is no HIV vaccine either, exact same BS. 23. GTA/Football/Foam Bats on Hillary, GTA, and High School Football · · Score: 1

Many people compare GTA and football to the 'catharsis' model of aggression. This states that if you're really pissed off, you have to vent some of that anger. Maybe it's playing GTA and mentally killing Bill Smith for stealing your lunch money. Maybe it's tackling the opposing team extra hard to get all that emotional energy out. Or, the most popular example, maybe it's hitting each other with foam bats in a therapy session.

The problem is this model is incorrect, even if it is widely popular and thought to be true. Lets look at football. If playing hard was cathartic and made you more calm, then football players would be as calm as buddist monks. Yet on average football players are more likely to commit violent crime. You can look at video game studies, they do in fact convey a rise in violent behavior if the video game is violent. Especially if you get caught at a younger age.
