  1. HD Camera Suggestion on High-Definition PC Video Conferencing? · · Score: 1

The JVC HD1 series of HD cameras shoot in 720P and are the only prosumer camcorders to do so to my knowledge. I own this particular camera and the pictures it shoots are stunning, however I don't believe the time for HD conferencing is upon us yet.

Once we get 100 foot viewscreens for the front wall of the bridge on our Intergalactic Warp capable starships, I don't think this technology will find much adoption.

  5. Googles "Super Computer" on NNSA Supercomputer Breaks Computing Record · · Score: 1

I wonder if Google has ever Linpack'd its clusters to get some idea of the computational power driving their services. I would imagine it would rank pretty high. Here is a tidbit from an article I found...

"Assuming that the 1Ghz chip is going at about a third the gigaflops of a 2Ghz processor (3.3Gflops), we can then guess at the size of the Google supercomputer. Just for the sake of argument, let's go with 1 Gigaflop per processor. This means that the Google supercomputer has about 189 teraflops of power on the low end of my estimates, 253 teraflops on the middle end, and 316 teraflops on the high end. This would easily put it on top of the list of fastest computers in the world."

  7. Question of OS Software compatibility. on Dual-Core Pentium 4 Slated For 2Q 2005 · · Score: 0
My question regarding these processors is this.. Will MS windows pick up a dual core CPU as two individual processors as it would in an dually box, and if so would you be required to run MS XP Pro instead of home, (seing as Home only supports 1 CPU and Pro supports 2).

Also on that same note, if you have a dual core proccessor with hyper threading, creating the illusion of 4 cpu's would this be able to run under MS windows Pro or would it need a "server" edition version of software which supports 4 CPU's... (Same for a dual Processor box with 2 dual core chips in it.)

Any one who can shed some light on this for me would become my personal idol. Thanks.

Looks like a fun project but to me, a 400 mhz slower... inferior processor and no optical drive doesn't seem like a design win to me.

On another note, about building one of these with high end graphics.... People get so focused on off the shelf cards they forget about a whole nother breed of integrated chips.... for laptops..

While I highly doubt the mini-itx standard will suffice in powering an x86 counterpart to the mac mini, a custom designed board with perhaps a radeon mobility 9700 or 9800 chipset would run most of the games Lan partiers play at playable framerates.

To acheive this type of miniaturization with the level of performace as Apple has done, it will NEED a company willing to custom design a laptop board varient to fit a case, that supports such mobile chipsets. Perhaps even the ability to upgrade the mobile graphics card via a slot in the bottom of the unit.

A dothan and a high end mobility graphics card would prove to be a nice little LAN party animal. but then the issue of $$$ comes into play a PC system outperforming the mini for $499 or less??? I highly doubt it.

Firstly an huge influx of low class customers buying up these machines, and secondly a huge influx of the same custmers coming to complain about/return their machines. The fact is that the target market these machines are aimed at are not exatly the most tech savvy people as explained in the article. They do not understand why their "brand new" bargain computer can't run their daughters preschool game which requires DirectX 12 and 5GB of ram to make annoying sounds and shapes (Exagerating of course). A pc this cheap made with current hardware would have the same problems when you castrate the CPU's/GPU's/Chipsets to get the silicon in the price range. People see a computer as a computer and expect them to do everything that anyone elses computer can. Hopefully in years to come as our generation takes over and computer knowledge is a little more far spread this will not be as much of an issue.

Moral, in this game knowledge is power and for now $100 PC's are just there to piss people like us off at the rest of the world.
