Firefly did a really good job at portraying a world with the tech capable of far-space travel, but lacking a solution for the less fortunate of society. Nothing bugs me more than when people criticize Firefly (and possibly BSG) for the unrealistic nature of the old-western style aspects. In reality, the transition from computer age to space age will leave quite a few people behind, struggling to find a milieu between the contrasting areas of development. Good for BSG for portraying the way it will be rather than glitzing it up for the masses!

I completely agree. For some of us the heaters don't quite cut it.

We have baseboard heaters that are quite ineffective at keeping the apartment warm. We had a cold snap that went down to -40degC recently, leaving the apartment (with max heat) at 13degC. Needless to say my 2800+ was running at 28degC, with motherboard hovering around the 15degC mark (with only a modest air cooling setup!)

    Ok, a more reasonable estimate:

I'm a student and I have around 20,000 in assets.. 1.5% of 20K is 300 bucks... that doesn't seem like I would be leaving myself in a lurch if I donated that money. In fact, I've spent maybe 200 last summer sponsoring people in charity events (marathon's, etc..) and I donate my time for free tutoring math, which is more-or-less the equivalent of billy putting out his chunk of change. The thing that's worse, there are people with a much worse financial situation than I am in and do a lot more than I do ... but these people don't make the news.

  16. I think the study misses some facts: on UK Report Suggests Dangers In Cell Phone Use · · Score: 1

If you consider the types of people who use cell phones excessively for recreational use (ie. simply calling someone to chat while they're bored riding the bus/in class/at work on break) they probably aren't the healthiest people in other aspects of their lives. Maybe I'm generalizing here, but I think there's some truth to how to live your life in one domain affects the other domains in your life. But seriously, what kind of parent would buy a cell phone that their kids can use at will? I think every kid should have a cell phone, because it's an amazing safety device, but it should NOT be used for casual conversation. I guess what I'm trying to say is there might be a lifestyle issue involved with the cellphone talkers that cause cognitive issues and/or tumors (such as lack of exercise, poor eating habits, emotional issues, etc.)
