Or Megaman 1 Dr Wiley stage. You bring up an excellent point. In the golden era of video games, it was perfectly fine to make stuff near impossible to complete. Now with so many different games to play, people get sickened if stuff is too tough.

(Aside)That's why I like the leveling concept. If you make a game that's actiony, but make it so bosses and higher levels are incredibly tough, you can always add a leveling concept to the game. Super skilled players will have the fight of their life trying to beat the game in under a certain time. Average players will go back and repeat earlier quests to power up their character. Not many games do this. Only ones off the top of my head are Castlevania:Symphony of the night and River City Ransom. I'm a big fan of action games where you can level your dude too.

Sam and Max hit the road(original for 386). If you ride the Cone of Tradjedy, you lose all your items. My friend loaded up a saved game after he rode it, and he couldn't complete the game anymore. I come over his house and ride the Cone of Tradjedy because he says not to ride it, and then I collect all his items at the lost and found.

I think loses and setbacks are ok in games. I mean if you can't lose, its not a game really is it?

Instad of mashing the only skills that do stuff, make all the skills balanced such that combat involves choosing the right move for the right situation. I know when I played my icemage, I'd just keep casting frostbolt, then when something got near me frost nova, backup a step, frostbolts again, the reset the frost skills, frost nova, backup a step, frost bolts until dead. In a group, sometime I'd cast ice block to save myself from the tremendous aggro I got for doing the most damage in the group. In 60 levels, I was only using like 4 skills. You'd think a game could be more complex and make you really think during the game so your choices on the skillbar mattered depending on the situation at hand, instead of a boring repetitive sequence for each battle.

Of course this leads you to the next step: Tekken Online. A game where you have to fight out battles unarmed or with a weapon like hackand slash, but gives you stats to build your character so harder monsters can be taken out with more ease. The moves shouldn't be as hard as a traditional fighter, but instead of trying to mash the right buttons to get off harder moves, they just cost more power and you have to earn them.

Thanks for correcting me. I thought Gears of War was a different game than it is. My main point still stands. I think classifying players as Hardcore or Casual is the 'in thing' in the last year or so and it sickens me. Sure you need to account for making a game where someone who spends 60hrs/week vs someone spending 5 hrs a week can play in peace like the other poster said. But calling one person Hardcore and another Casual are really generic terms that for one are vague and secondly encompass too many variables about the player to lead to anything conclusive on your game making.

  11. Hardcore vs Softcore players on Hardcore Gamers on the Decline? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'm sorry but the distinction between a hardcore and a softcore player is blurred. I'm sick of people saying that things a hardcore player likes that a softcore player doesn't like. If you make a quality game, people will play it. The problem lays in the fact that people don't make quality games and they lay their excuse here.

For example: The article says Gears of War sold as many units as Cars even though Gears of War cost more to make. They then go on to say it is because of hardcore vs softcore players. When in fact couldn't it be that Gears of War doesn't do anything new in gaming. Its just another FPS, and doesn't even have a ladder like Halo 2. If they actually did something with all the money they spent in production of Gears of War, it could be the next killer FPS. You only need 2 things for the next killer FPS: 1) Ranked Online Play 2) Balanced Weapons . You could even make a MMOFPS and it'd instantly be better than PlanetSide which lets you level to max in a day basically. But no they chose to do a very expensive FPS.

Hopefully gaming companies will get these terms Hardcore and Casual players out of their head, so they don't give up totally and not try anymore.

Once in space, you can run missions to earn more money to buy bigger and badder ships, or extra ships to accompany your fleet: See Star Destroyer for an escort. Finally you get a team of your friends together, and you take on large battles for big money or rebel/imperial control of star systems. It wouldn't be hard to get it right.

I'm an MMOG player too and there are lessons learned there, but I'll focus on Starcraft. If you make an online multiplayer "competitive" game, you must make it so there are no win trading abuses. Warcraft 3 had no win trading abuses and was better in that one aspect. If you make an online competive game, you must make sure you squash hackers like you mean buisness. An anti map hack program could have been made in a various number of ways, but they chose not to pursue that route and the game became pointless with hacks and win traders. If you can make your game fair so no hacks and cheaters can prosper, and use a chess rating style of ranking, you can make a very fun game where you compete to be the world's best. To me there's something really exciting about being ranked in a world class system on a game, it makes me want to become better at it and play it more intensely.
