The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark
Cosmos, Pale Blue Dot and Contact (fiction, but the book and the movie are entertaining and based on good science)

From the curious character Richard Feynman: Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!

A good science fiction book that takes place in the near future is Accelerando by Charles Stross. I believe it is also available free online.

Normal bird-man flight does not use jet engines. The suit has kind of "wings" or "fins" that allow the sky diver to glide long distances during the free fall.

Jet powered bird-man flight seems to give the ability to cover distance without losing altitude, but the jets are not powerful enough to climb.

If I understood the article correctly, the chip basically collects the C-CPU and all the components (radio etc.) on one chip thus greatly simplifying the design and reducing size, component and silicon requirements.

You still need something to handle the user interface on the phone, but this chip could be used from handphones to PDAs to cars to alarm systems that would all benefit for a simple communication chip.

Due to the extremely different conditions on mars compared to earth, the amount of methane released by the equivalent of three earth cows may be significant.

One has to consider the harsh conditions of freezing temperatures and thin atmosphere when considering about the possible metabolic rate of any life on that planet. All possible life would almost certainly have to hibernate most of the year waiting for that short time of martian year when the conditions are hospitable enough to grow/reproduce.

And as far as I understand, even one cow can produce a significant amount of methane down here. That we can detect such amount in the martian atmosphere is amazing in itself.

Dogs are a bit trickier, but as lab animals they are probably not that different from the mice.

Scientists don't just go to pet shops to buy the lab animals. They are usually bred especially for the purpose of lab experiments.
