  1. Re:Obligatory.... on Bush Signs Bill Enabling Martial Law · · Score: 1

The problem is that so many counties in the world seem to be losing their liberty. Here in the UK, when I consider a country to run off to, Europe is a no go, the US is screwed, Australia is becoming a nanny state, Japan is overly right wing, and all the other counties never had much freedom to begin with. Canada, which you suggest, is better but going down hill. Maybe somewhere like Brazil, which isn't 'free' as such, but is a nice place if you have enough money for gated accomodation and bribes.

On the other hand, the US has created people such as these, by not having these laws. While hate speech laws are dangerous, it seems to me that a lack of some provision to stop people forgetting the past is also important - as [reference goes here] said, "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

In modern Japan, there are no laws to prevent the country from forgetting the actions of that county in WW2, and we can see this has an effect - Japan has sour relations with China and Korea because the majority of the populous do not acknowledge that the atrocities committed by Imperial Japan (which were in some cases of a similar magnitude to Nazi war crimes) ever happened. Likewise, there are many hyper-nationalist movements in the country, because people have forgotten the events of the war. While the speech laws in parts of Europe are a little suspect in places, you can be sure there is no significant groups of people advocating a return to a wartime society!

  20. Re:Best. Advice. Ever. on RIAA Recommends Students Drop out of College · · Score: 1

Oxford and Cambridge are actually the cheapest universities in britan to go to. There is the three thousand a year tuition fee, which is standard over all universities, and the accomodation, which is on campus for your entire time there. This means you only pay for the accomodation for the 32 weeks or so the uni is teaching, so you can run off home to hang out with your parents during holidays. This differs from other universities, which would have you living in rented accomodation after the first year, accomodation which you'd have to rent at a full 52week contract. That is how I understand it, anyway.

And yes, you are right. The universities are heavily subsidized. The important part, however, is that the best universities in the country do not cost loads more than the worst universities, so an intelligent child from a poor household can go and get his/her Oxbridge degree, instead of being limited to a shitty polytechnic because of the economic situation of his/her parents.

Originally, there was not even the tuition fees, so that you could attend university for 3 years on very little money. It pisses me off how 'unlabour-like' the current goverment is.
