  1. Re:It's all about visions on Digital Music Enjoys Golden Week · · Score: 5, Insightful

I agree on your view of the two conflicting visions, but I disagree on the possible outcomes. Copyrights MUST continue to exist and artists MUST be compensated. Hollywood and the RIAA are right when they say that if sales stop, so will the product. That does NOT mean we have to be saddled with DRM laden crap. Buy the CD and rip it yourself. Buy a DVD or DVR and timeshift/placeshift to your heart's content. Fair use is not piracy and please don't confuse the two. I envision a future where the corporations provide a product I want at a fair price in a manner that is convenient for me... but my kind of vision is nothing but a dream.

This comment is bordering on the nonsensical. You might be referring to normalization, and you are almost certainly right about sound getting muddier at higher volumes (but that can be both speaker limitations or your ears), but why previews? And what the hell do you mean "percieved[sic] as much louder"? It IS or IS NOT. Volume is not a perception, it is an absolute, in terms of dBs. You think there are special guys who sit around and just do sound for previews? And they come to the conclusion that louder is better? Most likely you have sub-par speakers or a sub-par setup that causes YOUR sound to come out muddier than it should be.

I found this editorial to be very inane. Who is he to say what is right? And does he offer any alternatives? Online news could be static, but then it loses one of its advantages. Sure, I agree that front pages are a little messy, but you have to compromise on content vs ease of access. Deal with it.

That bit about the single console lock-in discs has been pretty thoroughly debunked and has been rejected by Sony execs as being unreasonable. How can Sony sell software if you can't bring your copy of GTA:PS3 over to my house to show me how I can stab hookers in the eye, steal their cocaine and then push it to my runners on the street?

Why aren't we applying that same standard to the PS3 or the 360? I swear, rationality goes out the window when consoles are the topic.

Personally, I intend to buy none of the "next gen" consoles until their first price drop, giving my wallet a breath of air and a chance for the consoles and developers to prove themselves. At this point, it's kind of ridiculous how fanboyish people are about consoles that aren't available.

  11. Re:Good on Mothers Taking the Fight to the RIAA · · Score: 1

I'm curious. Does that mean that listening to the radio and turning it off during commercials is freeloading? I mean, I'm getting something for nothing. What if I change the channel to something else while watching TV? I think it's no more sinister than trying to listen to the radio. I've downloaded thousands of songs and yet still bought hundreds of albums, because I know that artists need me to patronize them if they're going to keep making music. But I download songs to hear them, to expose myself to new things before I put down my money. There's one justification right there. Another? I'm barely depriving the artist, mostly the labels. I'd rather send $3 to the artist (more than they'd make off an actual album sale) for every album I've ever downloaded than pay retail for a quarter of them. It's like a boycott, except I'm not against the product or the makers of the product, just the sellers of the product, it's them I want to deprive.

  12. Re:Wow on Artist Suggesting Ways Around Copy Protection · · Score: 1

The right to fair use is not in the Constitution and only spoken of briefly in actual copyright law. It was primarily established in later cases/interpretations. Moreover, it is within the purvey of the US Congress to pass measures regarding trade, (copyright) thus it's hard to justify the "sacrosanct" right of fair use. Even more ridiculous is your statement "NO, IT IS NOT ILLEGAL! " Just because a law is unjust doesn't make it not a law. Break the law, knowing you're standing up for real rights and real justice.

I realize this being /. nobody is going to listen, but the point of DRM isn't even to stop files from being copied. It's to stop non-authorized users from accessing them. Authorization is achieved via cash. DRM is often implemented poorly, but from the economic viewpoint, it is often quite necessary (and will likely remain that way) to ensure appropriate compensation for talented individuals who provide some entertainment/content/code/whatever for the rest of the world.

Moreover, at least one earlier post mentioned "forcing DRM down people's throats". As long as people keep buying DRM-protected content, they're not being forced and DRM will continue to be added to content.

Jews for Jesus are not strictly Jews. I debated including this in my original post, because I am aware of their existence and the fact that they DO actively try to convert people, but I felt it was unnecessary. Judaism does NOT acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah, nor is the Messiah the son of god in the Jewish tradition, nor CAN there be a son of god. Period. As far as ancient times go, you may have a valid point. My generalization was a bit too sweeping. Perhaps "never has been" should be replaced with "hasn't been for hundreds of years"
