  2. psychology? illusion? on Low-Hanging Moon Explained · · Score: 2, Interesting

My high-school science teacher Dad explained this to me when I was about 6 years old.. How is it that these 'great minds' of the world have been grappling with this for so many centuries?
It's refraction... The same reason it's very difficult to catch fish with a spear or bare-handed..
When you look at the water in a stream at an angle, you're not seeing 'in a straight line', the refraction due to the surface of the water causes you to perceive the fish in a different spot than it really is.
This can also be observed in a fish tank (get real, this is Slashdot, do any of us EVER find ourselves wading in fish-bearing streams?) If you look at the tank from the outside, straight-on, you see the fish where it really is. If you look from an angle, however, your perceprion of where the fish is will be distorted in proportion to the angle at which you deviate from the perpendicular (with respect to the side of the tank)
If the surface of the tank were curved (like the atmosphere) you'd perceive the fish to be larger than it is as well.
In the moon's case, if you are looking straight up at the moon when it is directly overhead, you're experiencing as little atmospheric/curvature distortion as possible. As the moon gets lower in the sky, the refraction becomes more pronounced resulting in the perception of a larger moon...
I dub this the Archibald Castell Jr. (Dad) theory of moon illusion.
I assume I'll be contacted by the Nobel people soon...

How about some NEW Sci-Fi? I agree on the Star Trek thing.. Given TNG, B5, Voyager, Enterprise, etc., I'm a bit OVER the whole Star Trek Universe.. B5's writing was nothing more than a re-hashing of racial and political strife.. Some might call it good writing that transcends all time and place constraints -- I call it HACK tripe.

I want to see someone come up with some NEW SCI-FI content without having to go back to the well on Star Wars, Star Trek, Tolkien, etc. The Matrix was a nice new take on things, Battlestar Galactica is cool, but part of me is tired of the 'hoping to find earth' theme that Voyager beat into the ground. The show's well made and the acting is decent (sure beats B5).

So, how about more truly NEW stuff like the 4400 and such?

The same thing holds true for Accpac CRM and a number of other packages that are traditionally windows apps but have add-ons (sometimes 3rd party) that provide pretty well-rounded browser-based functionality (GoldMine, SalesLogix, etc.)

those invites are based on the iCal standard. I can't speak for why Sunbird doesn't support them, but the iCal standard is supported by numerous commercial groupware products like GoldMine, Lotu Notes, SalesLogix, etc. It's not rocket science. I suspect the conspicuous absense of support in Sunbird is due to some sort of misguided desire to purposely NOT interact with a Microsoft product -- at their own peril...

There is an understanding that they don't bother me at my day job as well. If I were to do this full time, I'd probably go legit and actually become an LLC and up the charges to $100/hr (though the existing folks would likely retain their $50/hr rate as long as they can pipe some referrals my way!)
