Okay not to be anti-Christmas, which I'm agnostic about being neither from America or a christian... But am I the only one who thinks this Santa thing might not be in the best interest of a child? I mean teaching them that gifts come from some magic guy instead of the parents? Or is Santa just a scapegoat so the parents don't get blamed when the kid doesn't get the more outlandish presents he asked for?

  6. Emulation's good, but it's not the same on Fixing That Old Game System · · Score: 1

I can't believe how many people are saying old consoles are pointless because of emulation.

Mame etc. are great, bt there's nothing like the real thing... If only for the nostalgia factor, getting in touch with the teenage you who spent hours with the console. I guess if you're the type of person who doesn't get excited finding a cache of musty old cartridges at a thrift store, you wouldn't understand.

There's also one thing emulation can't easily do, and that's multiplayer. Getting out the 2600 to play Warlords, the SNES to play Smash TV or Super Bomberman, the N64 to play Goldeneye-- in the living room, on a TV instead of a monitor, with four people playing at once...

  7. The secret to comedy is timing... on Humor in Games? · · Score: 1

And games typically take a lot of time to solve. Every medium is different-- what works on stage doesn't in a movie, what works in a thirty second cartoon doesn't in a half-hour show. Games that try hard to be packed full o' laffs usually fail because "big jokes" are only funny once, kind of funny the second time and annoying the third. Humor in games simply has to be subtle. IMO it works best in games like Fallout where the setting is dark and twisted, and the details are funny and consistent but the actual gameplay is taken seriously.

Yet again we get a game much later than the PC crowd. I'm not much more than an occasional gamer so I don't need it the day it comes out to be cool or satisfy my lust, and it's not that big of a deal for single player, but it really sucks for multiplayer when everyone else has had a year's advantage over you to learn the tricks and write the mods and hacks (which Mac players often can't install.)

No sense complaining, I guess. I knew all this when I bought my Mac, and I chose Final Cut Pro over Premiere and cool games.

  15. Re:Suicide Girls at Powell's bookstore on Nintendo Threatens Suicidegirls Over IP Use · · Score: 1

There's a saying that fits here nicely: stupid is not the one who asks for money but the one who pays.

I see it the other way around. If a guy wants to pay a few bucks a month to look at naked women, if that's what floats his boat and he can afford it, what's the problem? It's not my choice of, uh, recreation, but whatever.

The girls, on the other hand, are showing their genitals to the world for profit. It may seem like good money now (though I can't imagine the models are making THAT much) but Suicide Girls who are "dabblers" in porn may not realize that these pictures will always be out there, to potentially be seen by a future employer, their parents, their children or spouse a few years down the road... And I know a 20 year old punk chick may not think she wants those things, but we all turn 30 some day.

  16. Re:Suicide Girls at Powell's bookstore on Nintendo Threatens Suicidegirls Over IP Use · · Score: 4, Insightful

The Suicide Girls website is primarily designed to provide a place for other women who share the same lifestyle throughout the world to find each other. It's not intended to be a porn site although it has the secondary effect of invoking male sexual arousal. It does that rather well and that goes a long way to pay the overhead costs, but it is not the site's main purpose.

I call bullshit. Worse, pretentious bullshit. If they weren't intending to profit from arousing men then they wouldn't be charging for access. It's a straight up porn site, one that found a smart niche-- pictures of "alternative girls" for the guys with weirder tastes (like punk or goth.) Perhaps it makes the models feel better about what they're doing to say they're "empowering" themselves or whatever, but in the end they're taking their clothes off for money.

  18. Re:Why do we celebrate clones? on Classic Gaming with Zelda Homebrew · · Score: 1

You never had a hobby? These guys obviously love Zelda and wanted to see if they could code it. They also wanted to play new levels/quests in the old game. They're not trying to make money, it's an homage, like a bar band covering their favorite supergroup's song. It may technically be copyright violation, and will probably get shut down, but since there's no profit motive I can't see where this is doing any harm.

As for creating something new... Maybe, like many programmers, they don't have a good enough sense of story and design to create a compelling new game-- and they may not have the skills to create something that will compete with the great stuff that's already out there. So they made this, and thoughtfully included a level editor to allow Zelda fans to craft their own adventures with the characters and mechanics they love. Again, it's a hobby... Which is pretty much by definition useless, a waste of time, but also a means of recreation.

Anyway, I plan to try it out and maybe even design a few levels.

That sounds like work, not entertainment...

"Welcome to the world of Manna Munchers! It's all about chowin' down and powerin' up! Meet Chuck. He likes to eat. Help him eat as much food as he can, but watch out for Mr. Teeth...he'll crash the whole party!"

  24. Re:Do people care about PC games anymore? on The Sims 2 For Mac · · Score: 1

I can give you a few reasons off the top of my head...

    - The graphics. Until HDTV becomes affordable you're stuck at 640x480 on your TV.

    - Online access. It's already there, no dealing with dubious equiptment and servers.

    - The keyboard and mouse. Some games just don't either work or feel right with a joystick-- like Starcraft, which was miserable on the N64. Whether FPS's are better or worse with a joystick is a matter of opinion, but I prefer the mouse. A complex game also allows for a greater number of "hotkey" shortcuts on the computer.

    - Expandability. Levels and mods designed by other players are easily accessible on a PC game. You simply can't release an "expansion pack" for a Gamecube or Playstation game. Though I have to admit cheater hacks have ruined some games.

That's a few reasons PC games won't die... I'm sure there are a lot more...

Even on the cheapest new iBook, they don't give me an option to choose a cheaper drive than the CD-burning Combo Drive. What if I fucking don't want to burn CDs on my laptop and just want a lower pricetag?

I opted for a plain CD-ROM instead of a combo drive in my iBook a year or so ago. thinking since I already have a Superdrive on my desktop I wouldn't need it. I saved about a hundred dollars and have regretted it ever since. I can't tell you how many times I could've saved a lot of hassle by burning a CD on the fly to give someone some files, and not having a DVD has been a PITA on many occasions-- especially installing software.

Get the combo drive. Don't be cheap.
