  2. Sources of Power on Blink · · Score: 1

One of my favorite books of all time is Sources of Power by Gary Klein. Gary Klein studied how people made decisions in high pressure situations, like fire commanders and military personnel, and pioneered a lot of the concepts in intuitive decision making. This is one of the best written, most informative books I've ever read. I highly recommend it to everyone. The follow up The Power of Intuition is great in that it teaches you how to become a better decision maker, but isn't as well written as Sources of Power.

When I heard of Malcolm Gladwell's book, I immediately thought "Awesome, the great popularizer is going to be bringing these concepts to the rest of the world and people will finally know what I'm talking about."

Seeing the subtitle Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, I knew that this was a reference to Klein's book.

If you like Blink, or even like the idea of Blink, definately check out Sources of Power

  5. Why this matters on Cyberpunk 203X Coming Soon · · Score: 1

I've played both the original "2013" rules (set 25 years after when it came out in 1988) and the 2020 edition. I vastly prefer the look and feel of the original. It had a certain "DIY" attitude that fit well with the world, and the combat system came in it's own slim volume (Friday Night FireFight), and were a lot grittier and more realistic than most games (though it did have it's flaws, you couldn't ever kill someone with a .22 caliber gun). The 2nd version had some cool graphics (though I saw the cover art on a Sci Fi novel as well), but just wasn't the same.

What's really great about this is that when they combined with Champion/Hero, they merged the rules in a really impressive way, and open sourced the rules! They created the "Fuzion" system which was highly flexible, and said "anyone can create a game with our rules." This was years before WOTC did this with the D20 system.

I've been a fan of Mike Pondsmith's ever since 2013, and though I'm not in to RPG's anymore, I'll definately check out the next version of Cyberpunk. He's been promising a new version for a while as a pure labor of love, but he got a job with Microsoft and didn't have the time.

FWIW, R. Talsorian Games/Mike Pondsmith also have games set in a steam-driven Victorian world (Castle Falkenstein - diceless, you use cards), a giant mecha game (again, the first in the genre - Mekton), a goofy anime game (Teenagers From Outer Space), and have Dragonball Z and Bubblegum Crisis titles licensed.

I love Waste too. Though, I disagree with the /. idea that this was a subtle reference, he flat out told us he was going to release something that would revolutionize the internet.

If I had to guess, it would be a completely decentralized P2P app. A cross between Gnutella & BitTorrent, perhaps with some proxying for anonymity added on top. Proxying will slow you down, but confound the **AA, which he seems to love doing. If you could turn the proxying on & off, you could get a fast _and_ anonymous service. Fast for people who just want to download, anon for people who feel they need it.

Waste had a lot of protocols that would be useful for proxying, file transfer, etc. He should be able to build something like what I described on top of that.
